Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

Indeed they could go via Darwin, however unless there’s a lot of Darwinians hoping to fly to London or tourists from the UK hoping to visit Darwin that may not make the most sense without government support.

Just make Darwin a hub, like Singapore used to be. Domestic flights in from PER/ADL/BNE/SYD/MEL all connecting to the flight to London and the same in reverse.

It could be attractive to those in the UK wanting to come to Australia, even with a quarantine at Howard Springs.

Long term once the pandemic subsides, hopefully within 2 years I expect Singapore transit will return.

Just me or expectations a bit flat at the minute? Could be just being bitter after cancelling trip but i'm wondering if pollies getting their vaccines (dont understand why they are front of queue) will lose some of their pep to get it done in a timely manner

Can't speak for Aussies but definitely flat here in the UK. Very despondent. It's been a long lockdown....... and will still be a while before we can travel internationally. Domestic isn't an option either currently and hasn't been for months and months.

It has been incredibly difficult for you lot but you’ve made it through the worst. Europe is bruising for a fall. You got this.

I hope so. Europe is the only real viable travel destination for us, and as you say that's not looking great. Car rental prices (for UK travel) are through the roof as lots of cars were sold off during the pandemic to cover their bills/lease payments etc., costs have doubled/trebled there. Accommodation is scarce due to supply/demand as no one can go anywhere else, similar to what you've seen in Australia.

Trying not to sound negative but just can't dig myself out of the hole at the moment and have been trying for the last few weeks (months?).

It’s been tough. It’s hard to keep positive. But you can do it. Weather will improve. Vaccination rates will improve and there are parts of Europe that will be accessible later to vaccinated people. Which you both will be in a couple of months.

Pollies are only interested in one thing, and I'm sure you know that...

I’m also in the UK and I think a lot depends on where you are. 50% of adults in the UK have had their first vaccine and I personally feel the vibe is much more positive than it was here on the south coast.

I had my AZ a couple of days ago. Booked on the NHS website and was jabbed the next day. Very efficient.

And I saw on the news that some politicians there have been a bit more circumspect with their vaccinations with Boris having his after the 50% figure rolled by.But then he had the virus so should have had some immunity.
But the French PM had the AZ jab yesterday.Bonus points for that one.

Or from the 'glass is half full' perspective - the politicians are getting ready to head overseas for the normal European sports competition fact finding tours in July/August/September...

Purely coincidental of course that their trips coincide with finals/cricket tests etc.

Australia has removed the travel ban to NZ last night apparently - some people can start the game playing lol

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says she will reveal a date for the start of a new trans-Tasman travel bubble on April 6.

"We don't have a date for you," Ms Ardern said in a news conference.

She said more time was needed to set up the final framework of an agreement and determine arrangements such as contact tracing measures and managed isolation facilities.

Last night the federal government amended the legislation relating to Australia's travel ban to exclude people flying to New Zealand, paving the way for the travel bubble.

Previously Australians had to apply for an exemption to travel anywhere overseas, including New Zealand.

The agreement better have the backing of all our intelligent state premiers (signed into a contract or something) and also a publicly published guidelines of when people can expect borders to slam shut based on how many cases etc.

So initially this change will help New Zealand citizens that live in Australia and would like to go to New Zealand just for a visit.

Presumably if not initially eventually the travel bubble will require vaccination to travel (perhaps with a few limited medical exemptions).

Hi All, I have a friend (Australian citizen) stuck in Berlin, Germany and is trying to get back home to Sydney. He's had multiple economy flights cancelled by the airline, and he is no willing to pay for a business class ticket because he just wants to go home. Buying a business class ticket is obviously going to give him a better chance, but what else does he need to do? Any help would be appreciated. Does he need to fill out a form or apply to enter the country? Who arranges the two-week hotel quarantine arrangement - I know this is done by government, but does the passenger need to initiate anything before hand?

I'm in the exact same boat. I have close family in France and Germany, and it is looking like 2021 may be out completely, thanks to the "new variants" found in different places. The scientists now are in the media, on radio/tv and just seem to absolutely love the limelight. Everyday we have a new scientist come out here and say travel this year is basically done.

And people wonder why scientists are hated here right now......
