Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

Hi All, I have a friend (Australian citizen) stuck in Berlin, Germany and is trying to get back home to Sydney. He's had multiple economy flights cancelled by the airline, and he is no willing to pay for a business class ticket because he just wants to go home. Buying a business class ticket is obviously going to give him a better chance, but what else does he need to do? Any help would be appreciated. Does he need to fill out a form or apply to enter the country? Who arranges the two-week hotel quarantine arrangement - I know this is done by government, but does the passenger need to initiate anything before hand?
Have a look at madrooster’s guide to covid travel to Australia (there is a guide and a discussion thread) - there are some flights home in economy. But if he is content with business and already paid, then so be it. Quarantine is organized on arrival.

AFAIK, the passenger just makes the booking, and needs to comply with any covid test requirements before boarding. The airline does the rest, or at least passes the information to the aussie government to do the rest.

Cheers. As I told my friend, I can be savvy with travel, but getting him into North Korea Australia right now is a different matter.

He may need to increase his budget (buy a more expensive economy fare that is less likely to get bumped) and use some other suggestions also found in madrooster’s guide.

Even once borders reopen if flight caps remain there will still be some challenges getting home.

There needs to be a solid framework on how outbreaks are responded to, and more importantly needs to be a consistent application of it too. I still feel a mixture of optimism and pessimism.

Historically, consistent approaches mean the application of the lowest common denominator. So, going on what we’ve seen so far, border closures and retrospective quarantine would be applied across the board. I don’t understand why we are talking “bubble” with NZ at all. It’s quite clear that Jacinta has no intention of reciprocating, so what is the advantage for us?

Perhaps despite her public rhetoric, I could believe that the internal pressure within the government is mounting.

Well forget Thailand for this year.Even if you have a vaccination certificate and a covid free certificate until the end of September you still have to quarantine for 7 days with a few freedoms. You also have to be tested once.If no CFC then tested twice even if vaccinated.

On the issue of quarantine duration, Dr Taweesilp said, from April 1 to Sept 30, arrivals without a vaccination certificate (VC) and Covid-19 free certificate (CFC) would be quarantined for 10 days, and be tested for the disease twice.

Arrivals with VCs and CFCs would be quarantined for seven days and tested once. Those with VCs but without CFCs would be tested twice.

But even from October there are going to be other requirements at airports and tourist destinations.

From Oct 1 on they would be replaced with "close observation" devices and "bubble and seal" measures would be imposed at airports, transport routes, tourist destinations and communities near tourist destinations.

Idea - How about creating a....... national cabinet to come together and agree on a consistent and solid framework nationally on these things?

Then take that framework to our bubble partners....

Oh wait, we can't even agree state by state what to do.... sigh

Once we're all jabbed we shouldn't have any of this framework bull****, and NZ will be plastering ad's all over internet and TV to invite us to experience 100% Pure NZ.

12 months people, 12 months, and we should be relatively free.

Oh but you haven't talked about the new mutant variants..... the states are petrified of them.....
