Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

President of QLD Australian Medical Association, great interview:

I was in 1b. Got my 1st AZ - my 2nd in 2 weeks and i'm counting down. I almost cried with relief as they jabbed me in the arm. I can monitor for blood clot symptoms - what I don't want is to be COVID positive with my pre-existing condition. All that being said, my husband who is slightly over 50 insists on waiting for the Pfizer which is driving me mad.

Id advise your husband to watch this for discussion of Astra vs Pfizer for males vs females, something most of the politicans arent addressing presumably because of the minefield that is gender in politics

79% of people who took the ABC Australia Talks survey (60,000 respondents) apparently want the borders to stay shut.

This is just so very depressing. At this rate, we will never get out.
i wonder about the how the questions are phrased, do i think the borders should be open today? i can see an argument for no.

do i think the borders should be open in 6 months? absolutely.

set the date, let the public know the gates to the global zombie apocalypse is going to be opened and they have 6 months to get immunised

And someone might be upset with this report.

As I've said before in this thread. All depends on how a polll is positioned.

But you can forget any concept or border opening, or even a plan for border opening, if we're talking 70+% support for border closures. It's not worth even risking announcing a plan. It's actually very easy to understand why there's no political will. Just too dangerous politically.

1) Those wanting family reunions are probably most widely dispersed, and not sufficient numbers to sway things. This is probably the most likely to create change, if there's sufficient numbers (particularly migrant citizens) in marginal electorates.
2) Vast majority have shown a willingness to sacrifice overseas holidays. One wonders which electorate those who don't want to sacrifice them sit in.
3) International tourism's impact is probably most keenly felt in far north Queensland (Cairns and Whitsundays) - the electorates of Dawson & Kennedy, the Gold Coast (Fadden, Moncrief and Macpherson) which all have two party preferred votes for federal labor of <40%, so no chance of those going to ALP. Also inner Sydney and Melbourne are suffering, but this is probably either concentrated in inner city electorates that are not going to change hands either, or widely dispersed.
4) International students - predominantly causing problems in University sector and inner city electorates which a very left leaning, and not potential wins. Anything that weakens the university sector is politically advantageous for conservative politics. Just a fact.
5) Labour shortages- affects everyone, but very easy to sell the message about "jobs for Australians" - and have already been managing critical shortages, such as fruit picking.

Which, provided you can keep on pumping money into the economy until after the election, gives zero imperative for any other outcome. Simple fact that is not going to change.

Umm...anyone on this page has already said as much. This should have been taken into account from day 1. Australia needs ‘as many incentives as we can’ to get people vaccinated: CMO

“Some of these incentives will be talked about in coming days and weeks, but I think the main incentive is because it’s going to actually protect you, your family and the community,” Professor Kelly said.

Anyone want to tell Prof Kelly that this isn't going to be enough of an incentive?

And if you want to be depressed - look at the manipulatable graph. So many won't take it - even the Pfizer.

I hate to say it, but maybe we need more mini outbreaks - what will it take for people to see that the only way back to something normal-like is to have 70-80% of the population vaccinated. The exceptions need to be for those who cannot get vaccinated for medical reasons.

Or just announce a firm date we are opening to the world, give the sheep 6 months to get vaccinated, or face the wrath of COVID unprotected. Very very simple solution, only PM can't announce this until after the election win.

I basically made the same suggestion a few pages back- totally agree that this should be on the table!

Turbo charge it as well - once borders open up unvaccinated must wear face masks permanently outside the family home, until WHO declares pandemic officially over.

I do not wish full blown outbreaks on anyone, especially Melbourne. That would be terrible, given what Victoria went through last winter.

Is there where things are at with humanity?
One could just as easily turn it around - why aren’t people eager to get vaccinated for the benefit of other humans. I think the statement is about what it will take to get people to do the right thing rather than truly wishing another outbreak on Melbourne (where I live and went through home schooling with 2 boys - no thank you).

As bad as that sounds, what other way is there to motivate people ? No covid here and most people don't care about international travel.

People not caring about others and preferring to live in their bubble are the truly selfish ones.

One my my mates was like 'you can be the guinea pig'. Other one was like I am not getting it unless they force it on me.
Post automatically merged:

And yes, I got the first shot of Pfizer on Friday and I will get the second shot and be fully vaccinated in 3 weeks time.

I still want and need to travel domestically so I definitely don't want another outbreak. I think if there are further outbreaks that may just make the Premiers even more reluctant to open up for international travel, with the exception of Gladys.
