Talk of penalizing the unvaccinated by locking them out of society or taxing them extra is way premature.

70% of Australian (those aged under 50 except a few workers or very unwell people) are currently ineligible to get any vaccine, because we don't have sufficient doses of Pfizer for them. It is absurd to talk of punishing people for not getting vaccinated when they don't have access.

Threatening people or trying to force them to take a AZ (when other comparable countries have abandoned it or severely limited its use to over 60s) wont achieve anything, it will only create more resistance.

Everyone who has suggested these ideas have caveated, when there is adequate supply.

- it is now March 2022, there is plenty of vaccine supply (Pfizer, AZ, etc), only 40-60% of the eligible population has received the vaccine
Q: do borders open? do they lift hotel quarantine for the fully vaccinated? do the borders remain closed indefinitely until 80% of the eligible take the vaccine?

A reasonable piece with opinions by various experts including AMA president Dr Omar Khorshid, Prof Catherine Bennett and Prof Stephen Duckett, which could have been summarised from this thread!

Main points are:

• offer incentive by saying when border will open - time frame or %
• motivate people to vaccinate
• improve hotel and "cabin style" quarantine options
• run a risk based traffic light system for other countries based on their vaccination levels, type of vaccine, current outbreak status etc
• allow home quarantine for vaccinated travellers from low risk countries
• have hospital system ready to deal with inevitable outbreaks - including likely increase of flu cases as well as COVID cases once the border opens

All seemed to think that, on the facts, late 2021 was entirely doable - but Prof Duckett (who has the most political experience) said outright that it won't happen until after the next election.

In that case, let's hope for an October election.

Unfortunately while something is 'recommended' at the EU level, each country is still able to decide their own measures so it doesn't mean a blanket 'easy street' Still going to be another year or two of challenges around travel... at least.

You think you are being funny but I have explained before what I do.

I check what flu vax options are available (i.e. quad, tri, other) and read the TGA report to decide what is best for me. Then when enrolments open for for workplace scheme, I ask the provider to confirm which vaccine they are using. If it is the one I want, I enroll and get vaccinated at work, otherwise I book at a travel clinic or GP to get the one I want. Flu vax is normally available from early March, I wait til last week of April because if there was a problem with that years formula it will have had to be reported to TGA by then.

I have no need to talk down the lesser options, because no one has ever tried to inflict them on me. However if flu vax was causing blood clots at the frequency as the AZ covid vaccine was I would not get it and absolutely would discourage my loved ones from also taking that risk.

Despite the assumptions of some AFF'ers I have no issue if they (or anyone else) wants to get an AZ vaccine; and recommended my parents get it due to their higher risk profile. BUT I do not support forcing people to get AZ and will speak out against the AZ fanboys who are irresponsibly encouraging everyone to just get AZ, when we know there are safer options and the recommendation is for under 50s to get Pfizer here (and in Europe that AZ only be used in over 60s i.e. in those cohorts at greatest risk from Covid).

Why not? They are a danger to society — they are potential carriers of a life threatening virus. We place limits on people's freedoms for far less important causes — the payment of taxes, etc.

If you want the benefits that society brings (ie the ability to socialise in safe communal environments like restaurants, bars and theatres), you must accept the costs that this entails.

If you want to live a hermit life off the grid, I'm perfectly fine for those people to choose not to be vaccinated.

Maybe you should be, one of the early patients to go down fast and die in the Portland hospital my brother's A&E doc wife works in was a fit and healthy no known health issues male. And with all the varients out there, it's a bit of a shooting gallery for the virus. At least we still get good news stories, latest being treatment showing great promise developed by Qld Menzies school of health and US scientist collaboration.

Yep you’ll always be able to find singular examples. With every single virus. A 17 year old died in NSW not that long ago of an infected toenail.

Knowing about 10 people who have had it (and suffered nothing worse than a mild cold) and with 18 months of data backing it up, I’ve got absolutely zero concerns. Far more risky things go on in my life normally.

You clearly didn't read my post.

The entire point of my post was to protect people like you. People who cannot get the vaccine due to health issues are threatened by anti-vaxxers (ie people who can get the vaccine, but choose not to for whatever esoteric reason) because they impede our ability to reach herd immunity, which is what protects people like you.

Sorry levelnine, as you might imagine it’s a rather touchy subject with me, so please accept my apology. It isn’t just me but there are four family members, three over 50 with the same condition. Not to mention the thousands in the same boat.
We vote, pay tax and yet we are being discriminated against.
