Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

Australia is predicting borders will start to open from mid 2022. Students coming to Australia for the 2022 academic year will have no issues returning home to visit families when they want to go, which will be after exams at the end of 2022.
you cant say that when the gov have shown if anything changes on a global scale their one solution is Plan Hermit.

Equally you can't make the statement that a student arriving for the start of the 2022 academic year 'won't be able to visit family for the next few years'. There is some evidence to support mid-2022, there is absolutely zero evidence to support 2025/2026.

There is also 'evidence' going by your standards of 'evidence' (being words from politicians) that the world is flat ;)

it was not my statement originally, but i can see where the post came from, surely part of the attraction of moving from china to AU is the sense of freedom, this is part of what the gov is casting aside in its near psychotic lust for covid zero.

The prestige/employment opportunities of an Aussie degree is a motivation, not sure about the freedom element. If you are from a family that can afford the huge costs involved, and have a high enough 'social score' to be able to travel overseas anyway, life is probably going to be pretty good as it is.

the level of wealth to send a kid overseas for schooling is incomparable to the level of wealth you need in china to live without feeling the gov hand on the back of your neck

Interesting article about private charters into Australia during the pandemic. Why so many from USA to WA ? Most movies are made on east coast which is also where most sporting events held.

"But the busiest airport for arrivals was Bunbury Airport in Western Australia, with 22 flights - all from the US and all this month."

Its ridiculous that Natalie Portman was given permission to import her parents when for Aussies parents arent considered immediate family for immigration purposes.

And I read that the UK version of I'm a Celebrity will be filmed in Australia.

Isnt the UK version always filmed in Australia? But yes poor form and unecessary during a pandemic.

Last year it was filmed in Wales. I'd not known the UK version was filmed here previously. I guess it was irrelevant pre Covid times.

No - it's usually filmed on location in the UK.

But I support initiatives such as this (filming in Australia). It provides countless jobs in various industries and support services. Same with the Aussie Open, we really can't afford to lose it!

Sorry that is simply not true, only 2020 filmed outside of Australia. Ex contestants when interviewed on Graham Norton and the like always mention Australia. Plus I know someone who worked on two of the early seasons as medic in NSW.

From Wikipedia:

Queensland, Australia (2002)

The first series of the show in 2002 was filmed on a smaller site at King Ranch (officially El Rancho del Rey) in Kooroomool,[9] near Tully, Queensland, in Australia.

New South Wales, Australia (2003–2019, 2021–)

Since the second series the following year, the programme has been filmed around Springbrook National Park, near Murwillumbah, New South Wales, Australia. The camp and filming studios are located in Dungay on Creek Road.

Gwrych Castle, Wales (2020)

Work on Gwrych Castle to prepare for filming (October 2020)
In August 2020, it was confirmed that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 20th series would be filmed in Gwrych Castle in Abergele, North Wales.

Prestige in Australia only, perhaps. I've seen no prestige around Australian degrees while in the UK, especially when you're up against Oxbridge degree holders plus Ivy League across the pond....

Yes my son's first class honours law degree from the ANU was variously described as "harmless", "parochial" and "not very interesting" when he worked in the UK for a large law firm. His former girlfriend had her law degree from Oxford and got a much better reception, despite actually knowing much less about the law and how to work as a lawyer. Certainly in the UK, the old "colonials" mentality is alive and well.

I find the mention of Bunbury as very very doubtful. For a start "the available landing distance is 1,015 m (3,330 ft). The airport is currently restricted to aircraft with a maximum take-off weight less than 5,700 kg" which means that even a Learjet couldn't land there. I assume that they actually mean Busselton Airport which "has a single 2,460 metre long by 45 metre wide runway (03/21) and is rated at Code E with capability to handle aircraft the size and weight of the Airbus A330" And even then these aircraft would have not arrived directly from overseas. They would have been cleared at their first point of arrival in Australia - most probably Sydney. There are no Border Force facilities or even officers at Busselton.

There was a report in the local paper - the Augusta Margaret River Times about the arrival of a "chartered A330, the biggest plane ever to land at Busselton Airport". Edit: I meant to say that this arrival was due to the Margaret River Pro round of the 2021 World Surf Championships so if another 19 planes did arrive they were probably there for the same reason..

oops! Yes, my bad! 😮For some reason I had in my mind Alan Sugar filming The Apprentice. Lord Sugar's entry into Australia caused quite a bit of concern to many.

Absolutely, but in the Chinese market you can (a) get into an Aussie university, and a degree from here is considered relative good, as well as (b) mentioned above that there might be avenues to residency.

My almost 81 year old mother (in USA) was horrified today when I told her the next time she is likely to see me or her grandchildren is mid 2022. That will be over 3 years for us (we were planning a Jan 2021 trip just as Covid started changing the world). I will be fully vaccinated on 16 June with AZ. In theory, 2 weeks after that I just be “COVID safe”. If I spend too long thinking about how long it may be before I see my mother it makes me feel sick to my stomach. Last year’s approach was acceptable - for last year. When the vaccination rate reaches 70% here (which hopefully it will by Dec/Jan), then the borders should open for fully vaccinated. This is rational if one takes the initial “flatten the curve” as the goal. Covid normal is living with COVID and minimising the risks - not eliminating them.

Looks like Vietnam has ordered enough vaccines now to cover the population and expect to reach herd immunity by the end of the year. They have a very robust public health system/awareness and they will be flying through the jabs when supply allows. Hopefully, they allow travellers in once they are vaccinated and I can go and re unite with my fiance.

Australia will also probably reach the stage of herd immunity/offering everyone who wants the jab by the end of the year but we know that in Australia, decisions are based on politics and not health....
