In the UK, nothing - travel restrictions are getting worse and being vaccinated means absolutely nothing. It's pathetic.
Yes, but isn't this because Boris needs to say (to the great unwashed) he's done everything possible to justify the further reopening on 21 June?

So, purely politics.

What a joke this country has turned into.

NZ has got it right. Leave at your leisure, return when you have a MIQ slot.
But I know a few kiwis & they complain that they can get stuck O/S if no slot or hard to book a trip as limited slots.
Also if their flights gets delayed or cancelled, their slot is voided as it doesn't just hang there until your ready to return. This can become a real issue!

This country is not a joke, just frustrated for those that want/need to leave & return. This is a great country, by far one of the best in the world!!

Grass is always greener.

But this is OK

I suspect there will be some objections lodged given they plan to quarantine them in Redfern (see my earlier post). There needs to also be at a minimum the criteria than any student coming in under the program has been fully vaccinated with a vaccine approved for use in Australia.

There was a plan announced last week in SA to house quarantining students at Parafield Barracks but the local council refused permission. In some ways, at least it sees a way of getting people into Australia again which has to be some kind of progress. I'm at the stage where any commencement of overseas anything is a start.

The reality is, aside from a select few countries that you could count on two hands, the Vaccination paperwork cannot be taken at face value.

Vaccination paperwork, from anywhere could be fraudulent, unless it incorporates extremely sophisticated security features. On the other hand, there probably will be more than just 10 countries where electronic verification could be possible.

So you either:
* Limit initial places to students from trusted countries where evidence of vaccination can be verified;
* Build vaccination into the ticket price, and have them administered in the 3 weeks prior to travel by an authorized partner
* Or you nominate a lab to do blood test to confirm antibodies.

There are supposedly 100k or more students who are wanting to come, we can cherry pick the ones that present the least risk for this trial.

And currently China seems to be on a Covid roll again.

paperwork aside, vaccine efficacy is a real problem from some countries :(

which is why WHO emergency use approval is not a high enough bar to accept a vaccine as fir for purpose.

Setting out clearly what expectations of vaccinations are might helps. Some are, from what is suggested by the data, not terribly effective at preventing sympomatic infection (~50%) but prima facie seem just as good at preventing hospitalisation. But we've moved way beyond wanting to prevent hospitalisations.

'Alleged' effectiveness. I doubt there will be full independent tests of all available vaccines, so we'd need to wait for some reliable data to come out. But even if we turn to third countries that have received the vaccines as gifts... are those going to be trustworthy sources?

Yes, one expects there needs to be a degree of rigour around this. Whilst some countries I'm afraid don't have the luxury of waiting for western vaccines and take what they will get, that doesn't mean we have to accept it until our scientists do. But I still think most advanced western economies will accept a lower level of efficacy (with regards to sympomatic infection) than Australia will, provided there is a high level of efficacy with respect to preventing hospitalisation.

Interesting though in the propaganda wars, there are some ridiculous assertions being made (presumbaly in a certain language that's not English) around the efficacy of Pfizer and Moderna being inferior yo "inactivated virus" vaccines, that triggered .gov.sg to issue advice to say " cut the cough" to some if it's medical professionals:

It is critical that medical professionals do not spread unsubstantiated and unscientific information. The public has a right to expect medical professionals to give advice based on fact and not on unproven assertions. The public should rely on reputable sources of scientific and medical information, and verify opinions shared by others against these.

Our international borders could be closed for 5+ years at this rate... :( :(
