Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

Front Page of The Australian - "Premiers: time to lead us out" - "Reopening Australia with thousands of Covid-19 cases ... will not lead to more deaths over six months than waiting for virus numbers to be contained at low numbers, updated modelling by the Doherty Institute is expected to find. The Australian can reveal the modelling, to be discussed at a meeting of national cabinet on Friday, conducted analysis of three scenarios over a 180-day period based on Covid case numbers in the tens, hundreds & thousands when restrictions were lifted and found no material difference in expected fatality rates."

Just had a QF flight cancelled on my return from UK booking in Jan. So they are obviously making some changes, no alternatives seem to have opened up yet will have a look over the weekend.

(cancelled flight was Singapore to Perth)

Doherty should have done a 4th scenario 10,000s just to cover it all off......

Front Page of the Herald Sun - "GRAND PLAN" - "More freedom for tennis stars in bid for bumper slam, with fans' jab passes mooted" - "International tennis stars will be allowed to train and play while they quarantine in Melbourne in a deal to ensure next year's Australian Open goes ahead. The Herald Sun can reveal stars such as Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer will be required to quarantine in a new 'bio bulb' that grants them special exercise privileges."

We'll see if the stars come under such conditions. Not sure that the public would be happy to see this happen and not have travel for themselves, so hopefully we'll have eased international travel restrictions before the Australian Open.

Oh please, I'd fly to LHR on a Dash 8 if it meant I could go.
Can someone with mapping software and knowledge of appropriate range capabilities please give us a picture of what the SYD-LHR route would look like if traveling on a Dash-8...

Eight days and some decent overnight stops along the route: I'd do it. 😜 💺💺💺💺💺💺💺💺

I hope they speak very slowly so that WA and QLD understand this time. ACT also seems to be a bit confused 🤔 🤪
They’re a territory and quite frankly are captive to the path that NSW takes. What they want doesn’t matter and the commonwealth won’t stand for borders on the ACT boundary when half the workforce for defence crosses it on a daily basis to go to HQJOC or lives in Jerrabomberra.

Pilots min rest time, you will need half that dash 8 full of spare pilots!
If each flight is say min 6 hours, you might need at least 8/10 spare pilots on board, to have one pair take over at each stop point, while the other 2 take their minimum rest breaks down the back of the sardine can.

I received a morale chicken today: an international flight booking for just after New Years!
😁

I'm sure the timings will change between now and departure, but the passport will still be getting used!

My paws are crossed for you, best of luck you can fly by then.
Assuming ABF lets us have more "freedom" by then, ie, not having to apply for an exemption to travel, or not having to give a reason for wanting to fly internationally.
Edit: if they haven't changed this by Dec that is:
Form the Aust Dept of Home Affairs website:
***(((
  • your travel is as part of the response to the COVID-19 outbreak, including the provision of aid
  • your travel is for your business/employer
  • you are travelling to receive urgent medical treatment that is not available in Australia
  • you are travelling outside Australia for a compelling reason for three months or longer
  • you are travelling on compelling or compassionate grounds
  • your travel is in the national interest
  • you are ordinarily resident in a country other than Australia.

That won’t help. Travel as a passenger is not rest.

Depends. Is Dan sticking with Donuts?
I find comments like this frustrating. Vic Government has made it very clear over last few weeks they are aiming for suppression at 70% rate.

For now they want zero people in community while infected to avoid being in lockdown until that point (which is likely fate of Greater Sydney). They also want low numbers so when lockdowns end they can have less restrictions (all states will have some restrictions for next 4-6 months at least it’s just the level to be determined).

Yes WA Government wants zero cases even when (or IF) they reach 70% threshold but that’s not VIC Government policy.

Victoria Government has also been pushing AZ vaccinations and they disagreed a few months back when the QLD CHO pushed hard back against PMs comments about getting AZ.

There are some differences here in policies and positions across government leaders. People seem to be putting WA, QLD and VIC in the same approach due to them being ALP Governments but there are important subtle differences (just like SA LIB GOV has with NSW LIB GOV). I’ve watched a few pressers and when Doherty report comes up Andrews as always stated he as signed up to that approach. Meaning arguments are really about the right now eiyh level of restrictions and length of lockdown (I’d like lockdown to end ASAP).

This gives me great confidence about lockdowns and state border closures for BOTH Vic and NSW. When you have the two biggest states moving at roughly the same time it’s basically a game changer for everyone else.

I predict NSW will open international border first. Victoria will do it 2-4 weeks later. Quarantine rules will be reduced (still exist) in NSW first followed by Vic 2-4 weeks later. The big difference in time between the changes will be NSW being ahead in vaccinations plus a Government willing to push risk a little more. Some Gladys is right in that regard to being a leader for the country thry

As for the rest of the country they won’t be able to shut the internal borders to both the big two states at the same time if vaccination rates are high AND hospitals can cope.

the hospitals coping is the last major obstacles in my opinion. If both NSW and Vic show they can cope with hospital numbers then we are in the next phase / the new COVID normal.

I think Dec 2021 limited international travel for NSW is possible (right on the edge). Vic international travel Jan or Feb 2022 is possible. Other states not longer after that except for WA who might not be until April 2022 or later to reduce state borders (no idea on international borders).

also for reference I live near a central Vic vaccination hub and when state Government opened up AZ for under 40s a few weeks back lines jumped with younger people (they still need a doctor conversation on site to consent). This week with Pfizer being available for same group there were lines of at least two hundred people outside for the entire day (I walked past at 8 am and 5pm can’t be certain for middle of the day). People are desperate to get vaccinated in that age group. Rates will now move with this age group now eligible especially with Pfizer supply coming online (which unlike AZ this group doesn’t need a consultation to consent).

Let’s get there. I want to travel and see family and friends and I want lockdowns to be over ASAP, over 200 days officially in Melbourne but in reality more with my employers rules.

Well at least that's better than the 1930s and early 40s.

I can see the headlines now.
Qantas turns Back the Clock.
Qantas and the Leisurely Way to Europe.

I wonder whether they might throw in free excursions at the night stops cruise liner style.

You're on the money with this analysis. Victoria needs international students back too ("The Education State" is on the numberplates!) and things like the Australian Open to be normal again.

VicPol would be advising the Government internally about the increasing risk of violent protests and there was an article in The Australian saying that counterterrorism police are getting worried about potential lone wolf attacks on senior police and politicians.

Dan is also on the record that they won't stay locked down for those who choose not to protect themselves.

Good to see Vic is getting a move with vaccination too, for a while after their outbreaks back in April/May they were leading the country. If interstate rivalry is a thing let's channel it into vaccination targets.

Can they return the Y seat pitch back to those times too?

You're a bit pessimistic with your ranges, published range for Q400 is 1100NM.
I've got it down to 10 legs - SYD ASP LEA CGK HKT BBI KHI DOH TLV DBV LHR
Looking at around 4 hour legs, so probably a 5 day trip with overnights in Learmonth (yay!), Jakarta, Karachi and Tel Aviv.

How will home quarantine work for first flyers, at launch likely to be 7 days home quarantine, maybe test on landing and another day 7???

How does this work if you live inland and want to quarantine at home, say:

flying back from LHR via SIN to DRW, with you live in Alice Springs, or
same back to SYD but you live in Orange, or
same back to ADE but you live in Port Lincoln

All have flights there, but of course you have to go through customs, collect your bags. Wait for separate paid flight ticket, sometimes overnight. Only works if you have a flight same day? Has to be connecting flight as part of your ticket? Stay in airport? Limit to timeframe to stay in airport?

If you jump on plane to your home town do you wear a fluro vest stating 'potential infected international traveller'?

The idea is (or should be), you've come from a country with similar vaccination rates, so yeah you might have caught covid on the tube travelling to LHR. So you might spread covid to someone on the domestic flight to Darwin.

But, maybe you didn't catch covid in London. But someone in Sydney has covid, and gets on the same flight to Darwin, and now you've caught covid off them.

Point is, there will be covid around. We need to get out of this mentality that inside Australia = safe, outside Australia = bad. That's why we're going for 80% vaccination.
