Extra 500,000 Pfizer doses on the way from Singapore in vaccine swap

Extra 500,000 Pfizer doses on the way from Singapore in vaccine swap

This is great news and outside of the box thinking. Ensures the world/SIN doesn’t waste Pfizer vaccines, gets shots in arms faster in Australia and we send SIN some back after we have adequate supplies AND have passed 80%.

This has potential to move dates forward for 70 & 80% rates.

I am hoping the locked down States and ACT can put some of this extra supply towards Year 12 students. Both to minimise their risk when returning to school but also to (slightly) minimise virus spread of a highly mobile cohort.

Great news, the beginning of the end of this phase of COVID normal (that started 17.5 months ago) and moving to a new COVID normal where the things that bring joy can at least be attempted more often.

Let’s hope the Feds have other deals cooking as well.

I actually find this an embarrassment to Australia.

Australia, one of the wealthiest countries in the world, makes a deal with another wealthy, developed country to swap vaccines. I view it as a poor indictment on the management of Australia's vaccination program.

These half a million doses would have figuratively gone so much further in a developing country ravaged by covid and extraordinarily under resourced to cope with it. Heck, Singapore apparently doesn't even need the doses according to the ABC article. It may use them - as boosters.

It is Pfizer, recent analysis indicate Pfizer boosters will be needed sooner than it would be for AZ.

Also, these doses are nearing their use by date - there may not be the logistics available to get them to "a developing country ravaged by covid" before they would expire unused.

I’ve gone to the open since the 80’s when it was at Kooyong.
….If this goes to WA/QLD due to Vic issues - words will not have been invented to describe how I feel.🤦🏽‍♀️
I dont believe any of the other states have the capacity to host the AO. They basically need three centre courts running simultaneously (Rod Laver, Margaret Court and John Cain/Hisense) which no one else can do. Melbourne Park also has show courts and outer courts for practice, juniors etc.

Most likely it would move to another country, possibly permanently. Shanghai would be top of the list.

Dan will not want to be the premier that loses the AO. It would be terminal for the Sporting Capital.

I don't see how the 3 months rule will hold when we get to 80% and home quarantine (he says with fingers crossed). Got the approval to proceed from MrsOatek to make a booking for March 2022, being away 5 weeks.

I think the 3 months guideline will disappear soon after the borders are open.Probably December and maybe January.I have just played safe with our February trip.besides it let's us return via Japan and some more of their Spring Flower festivals.

To save a lot of other people the trouble of posting, here's my reaction:

That's appalling that there were 4 overseas cases today. I mean, these extra 4 over the 1160 local cases are probably going to throw out hospital system into total chaos, if any of them get sick enough to go to hospital. And they might have a scary new variant, that would totally be beyond the capability of the third world medical system that we have here in the former country of Australia (OK maybe fair in relation to the colony of WA, according to some media reports recently). And what a relief that we cut the arrival caps in half because if we didn't there would probably be 8 overseas cases today. Eight I say. And that would then be 1168 cases, and our medical system definitely cannot manage that. The extra 8 is just too much of a burden.

And anyway, what were these Australians doing in hotel quarantine anyway, if of course they are Australians. Seems like they have been out of the country. Well, they should not have been. Were they pursuing some personal self interest then, like their career, or caring for their overseas family members or something like that? Well they should not have been. They have had a long time to come home if they wanted to, so why are they doing it now? Oh a close family member is dying, who wasn't dying in March 2020? They lost their previously secure job overseas because of economic conditions and so they don't have a visa to stay there now? Well that isn't a compelling reason, and anyway, don't they know that even if they make it to Sydney, they won't be allowed to go anywhere else in the former country of Australia even if someone is dying, or the only home they own is located in one of the colonies of WA, QLD or VIC? No they are selfish, thoughtless, scary overseas Australians, so clearly not very Australian at all, especially if they have the hide to want to return from India, and none of them deserve to be let back into the country. Notice I didn't say their country, because they left it, so stuff them. That's why their passports are useless. And besides, none of them play footy or cricket or tennis, or make movies or music. If they did, then of course we should let them in, and let them go to whatever state they want, and give them special rules. Those people are heros, and they are only trying to do their essential work. And really, it's not reasonable to expect footy players to play footy without the in-person support of their wives and children, so let's be sure we bring them along too. I mean they are mainly young men, with needs, right. Speaks for itself. It's a good thing they are so respectful of the rules of their special bio-bubbles too.

And look, just in case you think we have lost our egalitarian streak, I think that hotel quarantine should apply to everyone who manages to get here. Yep, regardless of the actual COVID risk in the country they came from, regardless of whether they are vaccinated or not, regardless of whether they have tested negative on any number of occasions, yep even if they don't have COVID, it's pretty clear they are a danger to us all. Hotel quarantine for them all . They can't be trusted to do home quarantine, because some of them maybe broke the rules, back in March 2020, and of course, that means that nothing has changed since. No of course people don't have a deeper appreciation for what COVID means now than they did back then. And we definitely can't use technology to check on them, so it has to be personal checks. We can't do that because we don't have enough police and ADF to do it - because they are busy enforcing the curfews and the state border inter-colony crossings. Yes especially important to keep pregnant women, and children with cancer away from our hospitals, because they come from another colony. Oh well except for the 10,000 people a week who actually have COVID here in Australia. Those are true Australians, they never left the place, so we can trust them to quarantine at home.

Sorry, I have to go now, my 5G reception is fading a bit because I am just about due for my 2nd shot o AZ. I hope the reception picks up again after I get it. 5G is amazing. It lets you do stuff, faster.

Sarcasm alert, in case you missed it.
I can't even laugh because deplorably for so many people (safely in Australia with their own families close by) what you say is EXACTLY how they think.:rolleyes:

Might I add on top of losing the F1 - which will happen if there is no AO as they are roughly the same time.

The PM spoke about home quarantine again in the Press Conference today: Press Conference - Canberra, ACT | Prime Minister of Australia
"Once we get to the point, and that's certainly the case once we get past 80 per cent, and assuming, and this is an important development that needs to take place between now and then, is home quarantine needs to be a viable and widespread option for people who are travelling overseas and returning - indeed, people who are overseas and have been vaccinated with the vaccines that are recognised in Australia. For that to occur, then we need to get these home quarantine models up and running in states and territories across the country."

So I guess a get out of jail option for the PM to stop travel would be if home quarantine is not approved.

We need to see National Cabinet sign off on home quarantine.

So for home quarantine to be remotely possible, we need the states to get these home quarantine models up and running. At what point is this going to happen?

My understanding is SA was supposed to have a pilot - is this happening?

We all know WA and QLD are at best reluctant for any international travel of any sort and NSW has just slashed caps by 50% as they expect October to be their worst month so far. So if the states don't make this happen, this won't happen?

Yep. And in the next breath the media is reporting a scary new variant emerging (yet again) in South Africa. The one country on the continent that has a solid testing regimen, a vaccination program (albeit as slow as ours was for a while) and a fairly developed healthcare system.

Now let’s wonder what scary new variants are going to pop up in say, Chad, which has amazingly had less than 5000 “positive test results”, and unsurprisingly none of the three criteria above. And we’re hardly rushing vaccines over.

But, hey, they achieved COVID-Zero this week! Winning!

Do we know any details? The one I'm most interested in is how many days is the quarantine? Is it 7 or 14?
The National standard at present is 14 days. They are just trialling how you manage the process in home quarantine.

The trial in SA is happening now.

In SA media there are reports from time to time. They are trialing the phone and tracing app which sounds like it was created here. I think they are keeping it low key so all the tin hat doona brigade don't disrupt the trial. It's been a week now.

Bit the bullet and booked QF1/2, paying over the odds as not enough points even if there was U availability (which there wasn't). I know there is a lot of water yet to pass under the bridge, but felt it was time to be proactive. Leave beginning of March 2022, return end of first week of April. No change fees, and a small charge if I cancel.

First post in a while that reads like normal content for AFF. Lack of award availability!

Even before the pandemic, I often used ADL as an entry point for QR flights returning from Turkey, Africa or Europe since QR didn't fly to BNE. What will happen with squabbling premiers and what's to stop me from using this route again if AP is not playing nicely with others?
