Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

I wonder what is happening to hotels of late, with hotel quarantine way down, interstate travel knocked on the head, home quarantine coming in for those that were still getting some hotel action and restrictions that might be very prohibitive to tourists ... could be some dark days, hopefully some people with some good amount of push on politicans to get double dosed people able to travel relatively freely otherwise i really think tourism may be dead for a while (cheap flights?)

Just saw this on ABC News app

Some Victorians in NSW to be allowed home

Victorians who have been in NSW communities considered part of the border area between August 25 and today will be allowed to apply for an exemption to return home.

Health Minister Martin Foley said applications would open on Friday for a week and he expected at least 200 people would be covered in the initial trial.
This is a home quarantine trial so while it is for residents returning from interstate it obviously would inform an international borders approach.

If there is some new variant, there'll be a cohort demanding to know why the government hadn't set up the infrastructure to allow home Q... 'they've had months to do this', etc.

When we had caps and hotel Q people were demanding to allow home Q. Now home Q is on the table people are demanding we scrap that. If ever there's been a slippery slope, this is it.
So that’s it? We’re done? Australia is locked away from the world forever?

Why don’t we just close this forum down? The name seems like an oxymoron in your planned world.

It could be worse, we could live in NZ. Doesn’t sound like they’re going anywhere anytime soon, including here.

Indeed, although for Australia the implications arnt good at least in the short /medium term, China was our biggest inbound tourist market, NZ was number 2.

We will be flooded with Brits if we make a bubble with them (who are #3). USA is #4, Singapore #5 and Japan #6. All potential bubble countries. NZ will still be able to come here but will have to MIQ on return.

The proposal is that we have no lockdowns, everyone is free to come and go unrestricted, and potential new variants that we don't know whether or not current vaccines work for.

This is just alarmist thinking. We've had open borders since after the Spanish flu when any number of diseases could have spread here. Nothing is ever a guarantee, but you can only go on what we know. Closing borders for things that do not exist is just way over the top and will destroy civilisation.

If ever there's been a slippery slope, this is it.

A slippery slope to normality - wow - count me in!

I cant see it personally, Brits arnt going to fly half way around the world when all they want is two weeks in the sun in the med. Ditto for the americans, Mexico is cheap as chips.

The main issue with Australia is price for inbound tourism, its a long way to come for aussie prices. People from Europe / USA dont come back for a holiday every year in the same way that kiwis popped across for some QLD sun.

There's more to tourism than spring breakers.

It's the tourists who come for a month or so that we want, not weekenders from Auckland.

They came before covid, they'll only be here in greater numbers now with fewer competitors.

Singapore definitely a "no quarantine" country. UK and USA cant see it, especially the USA - even Europe have banned Americans again (Possibly political)

"The length of that quarantine period could also be reduced to as little as 5-7 days for fully-vaccinated arrivals from countries considered to be in a 'low risk' category"
The UK for fully vaccinated should work best of all. They have the same vaccine mix as us, already fully approved here. For unvaccinated, will be very hard, but I don't see why it would be hard for the fully vaxxed.

Please don’t give them ideas.
I’d like to visit my family in the UK ASAP but I don’t have 3 months leave.
How many UK-based Aussies are waiting? Given that planes need to do round trips, this only makes sense if thousands are waiting. Maybe there are thousands in the UK - I haven't paid close attention to the numbers, I am aware of the predicament (a mirror image of those trapped here).

I have a relative in the UK who would come home for a visit if Australians like my relative didn't have to do quarantine and we allow the same for tourists as well. Perhaps a few days of home quarantine would be acceptable, but hotel quarantine - forget it. My relative typically would come out for a handful of days and spending all of that in quarantine would be a waste.

If they are still going to require quarantine then the only option is for me to go and visit my relative but that's not permitted at the moment, so we're stuck unable to see each other.

The two big States are making similar statements re home quarantine for double vaxxed - perhaps even 7 days or two tests after arrival. There are just small differences between them on when it starts at a local level (NSW 70% double vaxxed; Vic 80% double vaxxed). I'm guessing AHPPC/National Cabinet next week will make this a major focus, so that covid-zero states can work out what system they want to account for arrivals coming via Sydney or Melbourne.

There are several just on this forum.

Lots of questions still to be answered, if a relative comes to visit and needs to quarantine, does that mean the others in the house would need to quarantine too? May as well do hotel quarantine.

And thankfully one small state - SA.

I’d suggest there would be tens of thousands alone coming for family reunification after being banned for the best part of 2 years from seeing family….

What has SA specifically said to date?

Not sure where SA sits on the fully vaxxed traveller and home quarantine scale - I suspect they would lean towards 14 days, but have not heard anything as low as two tests on arrival (possibly 3 or 5 days apart).

If SA went lower it might given them a "competitive advantage" over say arriving in WA, which presumably will have a cap and 14 days hotel quarantine (assuming open SA/WA borders remain). If at 14 day home (AirBnB) quarantine, it might not be that advantageous to enter via SA.

Premier has said he will stick to the National plan as has CHO at reductions at 70 then the 80. Remember SA has started trialling home quarantine already. As it’s a trial then currently 14 days. Must have finished the first cases by now.

Yep, the National Plan doesn't say how long quarantine is for - so I guess it will be up to States/Territories to decide rather than a National one-size-fits-all Standard - well one can hope National Cabinet will come with a variable answer because the risks in each jurisdiction is different.
