They could just send you a new one with a later expiry date. Surely that is less work than a full re-application.

Anyway, it’s a bit rich of DFAT to act like it’s a surprise that people who were banned from travel have let their passports lapse. Or worse still to take a tone that blames people for letting their passports lapse.

Any new one would cost more money and the Passport Office works on a 'cost recovery model' (not to mention the photo requirements).

Many people will have moved in the 10 years they have their passport. It would be logistically difficult to send people new ones without requiring them to apply. If they gave free extensions for everyone then the system would be overloaded with applications for that. People with no intention to travel in the next year or two would unnecessarily delay people who need to travel sooner getting their new passport.

Yes, shame Australia isn't part of this, but SG government would need reciprocity from AU government for Singaporeans to enter Australia. When we return to Singapore in two weeks time (from Melbourne), we are seriously thinking about taking a 2 week holiday/WFH first in US or specific countries in Europe, instead of a 7 day home quarantine as per current plans. Having done 3 x 2 week hotel quarantine and 1 x 2 week home quarantine already, mentally it would be nice to avoid a another 7 days locked into our apartment.

I thought 5 year passports were only available to children and older Australians (>75). Also Australian passport is no longer available in the 66 page version. When I renewed in 2019 I only could get 34 page version. The two passports I had before the 2019 renewal were the 66 page versions (that I went through in 11 years). As it turns out my page usage rate has slowed to zero in the last 18 months even though I have travelled very infrequently (no stamps).

If running out of pages you can get a replacement passport that expires on the same date as the one it is replacing (provide >2 years left), but at $189 (vs 301 for new passport), you really would want at least 6.5 years left on the passport for it to be worthwhile.

Edit: But the OP was talking about their approach to passport renewal, probably when more options were available. None of this takes away from the fact that many will be looking at renewing passports now that international travel is about to open up and face the uncertainty over how quickly the bureaucracy can respond.
