Priority boarding on QF domestic - what is the story?

I flew on US Airways this past weekend. On every boarding pass they print your boarding zone from 1-5. Obviously it you are in First Class, have status you are Zone 1 and it flows from there. It makes so much sense, there was never any pack of hungry wolves hovering around the boarding gate because everyone knew they would only be allowed on based on their zone.

Surely it would not be that hard for Qantas to implement something similar so people know if they are a 5 there is no need to even bother getting in line before the flight is called.

AA has a similar system. Those with priority boarding entitlement have "Priority AAccess" on the BP and then everyone else has a Group Number. Works well, although after those with priority board I'm not sure what goes on at the gate because I'm on the plane in my seat by then!

One point in QF's defence on this though is that to change the BP printing may not be an easy function and to class people into groups for boarding is a major system change - if only a minor process change.

It would seem QF only has two of these fancy pull-up banners so I think we can expect to see priority boarding to not only occur at just one gate at a time, but also just one airport. This will probably be on a rotating basis, though, to ensure all airports are covered. Even the smaller ones will probably get a pull-up banner for a day or two each year.

Alan Joyce could afford to pay for signs on all gates at all airports out of the pay rise he has recently received.

Perhaps by page 100 of this thread, QF may have implemented priority boarding?

Wot next - flash mobs?.....Hang on, nobody would notice one, they would just think it's the normal boarding crowd.

The mysterious traveling pancake machine show worked so well, they are clearly trying to replicate results.

Was that another article I missed? I only read the one about his cut in base pay, increase in take home due to the his long service leave and increased reliance on performance related pay - you must have read another one...

It probably depends how hard it is to convert peoples FF status to a zone. Straight out comments like "catering not assured" for changing flights at the kiosk or "operated by Sunstate" "operated by Alliance Airlines" seems to be fairly easy.

Just wish they could put a gate number on the domestic boarding passes like they do for international flights a lot of people using kiosks look at their sequence number & assume that's the gate number. Once upon a time when you checked in with a real person they mostly wrote the boarding gate on the boarding pass for you. It would save plenty of questions like "excuse me can you tell me where gate one hundred & twenty three is".

?

Here we go for those who can't see...

Um, isn't the banner missing something like "OneWorld Sapphire" - Danger, thought you might've pounced on that! ;)

It is fairly easy to add these in now as they will be in the programming - now they would have to change the programming to identify boarding zone/sequence. I can't imagine that to be a quick fix (and I don't want to have to wait for this to get priority boarding)

And Gold. But what you really expect QF to honour their OW PB obligations? Seems QF believe they can do what they want with domestic PB and restrict it to J, WP and OWE paxs, that is if it ever happens.

Could you please point to the phrase that says Priority Boarding on this page:

oneworld - oneworld Tier Status

All i see is boarding at convenience. QF HAVE implemented Board at Convenience as they allow SG/OWS to board whenever they want irrespective of row number.

Joining the end of the queue is not Boarding at Convenience. If that was so they why does QF have a dedicated PB lane for international flights that specifically says

First,
Business,
Platinum,
OW Emerald,
Gold,
OW Sapphire?

BY QFs own action they have enacted their OW Boarding at Convenience requirement via dedicated lane to the BP scanner for international flights. Why should QF think that doing the same for domestic flights would be any different?

The wording from the QFF site for SG reads "You'll be invited to board at your convenience."

"Boarding at your convenience" means that you should be able to board the plane when it suits you. It doesn't mean standing at the back of a queue of 100 people.

Hmmm. Good point. I'm clearly slipping!

Of course, the QF website only lists priority boarding for Platinums on a domestic basis. The oneworld website lists "board at convenience" as a benefit for oneworld Sapphire and Emerald, which can righly be interrupted very differently from priority boarding.
