Received the email yesterday morning and have requested the upgrade for tomorrow's SYDAKL flight  . Regardless of whether it materialises I'm looking forward to the new F Lounge menu and the wagyu carpaccio.

Thanks for that heads-up Inver and blackcat20!
Have a discount Y fare PVG-SYD in January and the overnighter is never fun.
I was definitely not looking forward to it as the 2 trips (via HKG) between now and then will be in J.
No email but request able to be submitted, so here's hoping.

I originally thought this was only good til the end of June, but I tried upgrading my other 3 booked flights to LAX and have upgraded them all, or at least they tell me I'm in the queue. What the hell, they are only points!!!!!!!!!!!
I might get used to travelling in J, but then I'd have to pay for it!!!!!!

Typical, having had 5 red eye trips ex Asia this year where I was keen to upgrade, the one booking I have I managed to snag a cheapie on the EK 3PM ex SIN home, so no red eye, makes you think long and hard about the points value!

My WLG-SYD-BKK//SIN-SYD-WLG earlybAug was on a non-upgradable N class econ fare, and now I could upgrade any or all sectors. Pity I used all of my points for the EK A380 biz trip x4 BKK-HKG in Dec.

Thanks all for posting and comment.

You gotta love this site!! I am also flying PER-SIN on 2 August and so registered for the upgrade during this window of opportunity. I hope the "not so official accountant" is wrong and they were only for the flights to 2 July, thus making it that our request will never be honoured.:)

Ouch, probably not the best use of points given its $750 return booked in J, I am doing F for $1K return next month, suppose it all comes down to the cash available!

IME once the upgrade request is in system it will be processed the same as if you had booked an upgradable Y fare. I got a Y to PE upgrade in February using the same loophole (I did not receive the email, but logged a request anyway). I think the only big difference is that once the "promotional" upgrade window closes it is not possible to cancel or update the upgrade request online.

OK thanks defurax. You learn something on this site every day. I wish I had joined earlier:)

I assume on EK code - I'd love to be able to book that on QF code and earn SC!

yep EK code as a QF award. I had 100,000 QF points and needed to get BKK-HKG-SIN. $$$ are tight so booked EK Biz for 4 of us BKK-HKG on A380, then 3K(JQ) BKK-SIN for $A 200 each. The joys of a family travel......

The 100k points would have allowed upgrade 'requests' for Aug work related travel WLG-SYD, the SYD-BKK, then SIN-SYD.

For the outbound travel, actually brought 160,000 AA miles between wifey and I for a total of $A 3000, which has allowed 3 of them to fly Biz WLG-SYD-SIN-BKK ow, and me First WLG(J)-SYD(F)-HKG(J)-BKK.

Back home from SIN on China southern and Air NZ ow for $A400 each SIN-CAN-AKL-WLG - so an eclectic trip.

Overall it is WLG(QF J)-SYD(QF J)-SIN(CX J)-BKK//DMK(DD Y)-UBP(DD Y)-DMK(FD Y)-SGN(FD Y)-DMK//BKK(EK J)-HKG//HKG-SIN(3K Y)//SIN(CZ Y)-CAN(CZ Y)-AKL(NZ Y)-WLG. My difference is WLG(QF J)-SYD(QF F)-HKG-BKK(CX J). Phew!

Thanks OP! I've got a trip mid September that is now upgradeable.

Strangely last I checked you could register for PE and J upgrades cascading (if you don't get J you may still get PE). Now it's one or the other. Did that change recently or am I dreaming?

Company policy is non-upgradeable sale fare or worse for international so I don't get this opportunity often.

You still can. But PE must be available on the route on that day.

Hypothetical:
Pretend I have two itineraries later in the year in O class trans-Pacific. I have enough points now for upgrade request to J for just one of the sectors, but the system allows me to place requests on multiple sectors on both itineraries, the sum of which far exceeds current points balance.

If first upgrade is granted, I use most of current balance. But by the time the second itinerary is flown, I will have accrued enough to cover request on that flight.

Question: If the first upgrade is approved and I use all points, will subsequent requests in the system be cancelled as "insufficient points" or will they remain in place?

Nope. Both were available. I clicked on PE, accepted the terms, then it shows PE requested, J N/A. Clicking on "N/A" shows I need to cancel the PE request before I can request J. Seriously Qantas, just take my points and don't make it so difficult! Always with the conditions and caveats.

They are only refused when the final actual upgrade process is attempted - due to lack of points at the time.

I've been in this situation a few times.

Well I just did the same and it worked for me! Are you sure of the box ticking? Mmmmm. Strange.

Mine shows like this:

Singapore

Sydney
Upgrade to: Premium Economy
Points: 25,000
N/A

Upgrade to: Business
Points: 40,000

* Premium Economy will be requested if Business request is unsuccessful.

Requested* Cancel

And the box is here:

Upgrade to: Business
Deduct: 40,000 points (Note: Points will be deducted when the upgrade is awarded)
(box) If Business upgrade is declined, request an upgrade to Premium Economy for 25,000 points

And then this happens (just seconds ago):

If Business request is declined

Upgrade to: Premium Economy
Deduct: 25,000 points

Right my mistake requesting PE first. Cancelled and corrected thanks for the tip.

Note: no email.
