Completely agree! What I forgot to mention in my original post is that she said the 82,500 by referral is for all of 2016, but they just don't want to advertise it for new customers post Feb 29!

The referral link at my last reading said it expires February. But it would make sense - amex trying to build customer advocates. Apple pay, Samsung pay and a bucket load of points are a decent way to start 2016!

Unfortunately Amex has been "login unavailable" for the last half hour or so. I assume a whole heap of last minute applicants... Referral link still says 29 Feb.

I'm a bit worried since I log in and get a "refer a friend bonus". Haven't hit the $3k spend yet, but it seems strange to trigger a 42,500 points reward?

That seems to be what some who already have amex's report receiving instead of the full 80k. The risk being if you call and they say "you're not meant to get any points at all". The potential reward being the other 30k.

Personally, I'd probably wait for the points to sweep, transfer them to a family member, and then take the risk and call up with a screenshot asking for the extra 30k.

Impatience got the better of me and I called. The rep was helpful and said she'd look into it and call me back; apparently I should be getting the 80k points if that's what I signed up for. I've never had an AMEX & used the right link, so I see no reason for getting any less than 80, but sadly might have to hit the $3k to find out...

Ah you should be right then. Amex are generally good (in my experience anyway) at following these things up. As soon as you hit 3k, just give them a ring again if the points don't appear.

Ok so the offer for the general public has been dropped to 30k.

The referral link still shows the same offer as before (80k + 2.5k bonus), but the date hasn't been updated yet.. it still shows 29 Feb 2016! So we haven't really got anything in black and white as yet.

Hey,

I was planning on giving the card a go before the cutoff date yesterday but hesitated due to $3000 spend (I recently got the ANZ card and am still working through $2.5k there) and ended up not getting it.

I noticed starting today they advertise only $500 spend (in 3 months) to get the 30k bonus.

Anyone knows if I apply this month using a referral link to get 82.5k points will I have to follow last month's rules and spend $3000 or just $500 as per the new rules?

If you're going to apply regardless, then why not use a referral link? Here's mine if you haven't already got one selected. Otherwise, just give AMEX a call and tell them about the referral link you have...

I will apply only if I get 80k points. Otherwise I'll just go for the NAB card with 60k points

Call them up and see and if it's a yes, than you're up for 140K points add in the ANZ Black and you're good for 215K points

Personally, I wouldn't apply for something knowing that the application breaches the T&Cs. If their computer does something right for a change - and invalidates the offer - you have no legs to stand on in an appeal.

I would wait until they refresh the referral offer - Jaskie reported yesterday that their agent said referrals would stay at 80k throughout the year - and then apply using a refreshed referral link.

The agent is likely to go off whatever the list of current offers is, which, according to the public website, is 30k. Even if they tell you 80k over the phone, I would want it in writing myself...

Looking like the 80k (plus free flight) for amex QF ultimate is the largest card on offer now, apart from the ANZ black. A pity, the $450 annual fee is still too high!
