Qantas apologises to frequent flyers with status extensions, lounge passes, points & more reward seats

Agree, the discussion about QF's higher fares targeting a 'different type of customer' seems to have missed a key reason many are willing to pay the higher fares on Qantas over the cheaper competitors - the perception that these are premium prices because you get a premium service, and for many the idea of paying a bit more to get the peace of mind that you'll be looked after if anything goes wrong, while a lower cost carrier may leave you stranded or at least be more difficult to deal with.

But many people have also not had issues, or as many issues as some would assume based on the media spotlight. We have people flying around Australia on all carriers (admittedly less JQ) and there really hasn’t been that much…. We did avoid school holiday madness, but we do that every year anyway.

Many other frequent AFF flyers have reported no real impact either upthread but happy to take the ‘sorry’ anyway.

Clearly all the airlines have had / have issues still.

It's an expectation thing. People rightly or wrongly are expecting JQ or VA will have issues and be difficult to deal with. So it's not really news when those expectations are met.

On the other hand, most of Australia expects Qantas won't ever have those issues, so it becomes news when they do.

Im not sure that’s 100% accurate pretty broad catch all there!, but regardless lots of people are not actually experiencing issues as well this so it doesn’t really matter.

Back on the topic: My DBL lounge passes arrived, which is neat, except I'm WP (and also had just made WP at the time of the announcement), so these aren't of much use to me. I'll fire Qantas an email and see if I can get this resolved, but I suspect it won't be easy...

Would be nice if they allow you to transfer them to family or friends. Instead removing them from your account

Mine yet arrive, no issue, my next QF flight in Jan from Perth inter terminal so not sure I'll use these J lounge passes.
Guess I'll book another QF flight at some point & fall for the QF marketing trap & fly them again.

I think I can transfer them, but I'd rather have the 15/30k points they've been giving out to WPs.

AJ simply brought out the well-worn playbook of his heros and mentors and followed it tirelessly ... "Use the Group, young Alan!" - build opacity in the books, balance sheet transfers, play off your employees against each other, parasite the expensive parts of the business, grow the losses, strip and shift assets. Bad mouth the organisation and its people, re-write the books to slash asset values and drop the share price while in fights with the employees, then secure the big options deals priced at bargain basement ... which you'll cash in when the inevitable bounce comes once the books are washed, full of under-priced assets and with the employment agreements done and dusted at the lowpoint. Ka-ching.
Rinse.
Repeat.
...and write-up new aircraft from cost price to list price and 'boost' balance sheet 'equity'.

AJ did the two-step expertly while at JQ - shifting planes back to Q just when they came due for major service checks & as well Q footed the cost of repainting & changing the seating. What a profitable place JQ was.

Meanwhile QFF reward redemptions were 'enhanced' so that Q redmptions to the same departure/destination pairs had massively greater 'fuel' surcharges on Q flights that used less fuel per passenger than the JQ flight.

Cannot wait for the 'Climate change' surcharge enhancement - just in time for the next COP perhaps?

I find it repulsive how Qantas has presented this apology as though ALL frequent flyers are going to benefit, (and the media fell for it and swallowed their lies.)

Firstly, the $50 voucher has too many strings attached, is jam-packed full of prohibitive t's & c's, and besides, they are increasing their fares by 10% due to high fuel costs anyway.

Secondly,

Correct me if I'm wrong, but as a Gold FF with an end date of 31JUL 2023, what am I actually getting out of this? After all, I chose Qantas, and paid them an eye-watering sum of cash for it too, retaining Gold by flying 21 sectors between 03 January - July 31 2022 (Could not do any flying between 01 AUG 2021 and Jan 2022, as most states had their borders shut to Victoria.) I did most of my domestic traveling in summer, and to be honest, I thought that Qantas was pretty good over the mid-late summer period up until about easter when everyone seemed to return to the skies en masse.

It wasn't until I flew to the USA & Canada in June/July that Qantas made traveling absolutely intolerable. Firstly, they made it nearly impossible for me to redeem my flight credit from a canceled USA booking in 2020, and then jacked up the prices and made the ticket over $2100 dearer than my original booking.

Then, when it came time to head off, not only were the delays ridiculous, (QF93 arrived at LAX so late that I missed my red eye to BOS), and had to wait around terminal 4 at LAX until 330am to catch a jet blue flight to BOS via JFK (where there were more delays), but, on arrival at check-in for QF93, I got bumped from my bulkhead PE seat to a middle seat, which made me absolutely livid. They did this despite the fact that I had arranged extra legroom with Special Handling due to my painful skin condition (I had even followed up with SH 72 hours prior to ensure that it was still in the system.) The so-called "national carrier" treated me with utter disdain. The only element of that $6000 PE MEL-LAX-BOS-JFK-LAX-MEL booking that was positive, was the fact that I was upgraded to Business on QF94, which was amazing, as I had never flown J long haul before.

Thus, I was somewhat pleased last Sunday when I heard that Qantas would be granting a further 12-month across-the-board status extension. I thought that the following 12 months would be a good opportunity to take advantage of the 50% extra reward availability and head off back to the US, or perhaps even Japan, and have been really excited about this over the last few days, (Despite the fact that there is close to zero J reward availability during 2023 northern summer.)

Although I came close to retaining Gold with the many sectors I completed, I wouldn't have gotten over the line without the March DSC promo. Now I hear that it is highly unlikely for Qantas to offer another one of these anytime soon, I honestly don't believe that I'll make it to Gold for another year. This is a real bummer, because I do the bulk of my traveling (to the USA) every even year, as that's when I have my international conferences & industry exhibitions etc.

From the dozens of travel sites, media outlets, and even Qantas themselves - they have all made the status extensions out to be for "all" elite Frequent Flyers, when in fact this is pure misinformation, (I didn't realise this until about an hour ago.)

A few examples of erroneous information below.

From Qantas newsroom:

"12 months status extension across tiered members Silver and above to continue to enjoy the benefits associated with their tier for another year."

From pointhacks - tiered frequent flyers will ‘enjoy the benefits associated with their tier for another year.’

Boss Hunting - "With another year added to the Qantas status extension program, frequent flyers should be able to keep their status through till December 2024. "

Executive Traveller - "The airline’s ‘apology package’ offers a fistful of benefits including a 12-month status extension for all frequent flyers at Silver or above,"

I gather from this, and from the updated status support page on Qantas.com, that if your anniversary is from July to December, you will not receive a status extension, but if your anniversary is from January to June, your status will be extended all the way through (potentially) mid-2024. How is this in any way fair to those (July to December) who gave Qantas a tonne of cash and got spat on, as in my case? Those who have the later anniversaries (January - June 2023) had even longer lead times to begin traveling than those in my boat (or thereabouts), but they get theirs extended for even longer? Essentially, they get an extra 12-month extension.

Lastly, why do only platinum one and Platinum QFFs get 30,000 & 15,000 points respectively, when Gold and Silver get absolutely nothing? Isn't this just a case of Qantas looking after their upper-crust customers? I mean, why not give Gold 7,500 points, and Silver about half that? Why do they get absolutely nothing for being slapped in the face for choosing to stick with Qantas as flight operations have resumed post covid?

It's one giant scam, and all Qantas is essentially doing here is offering up yet another insult to their mid-tier customers. It's perverse.

Im also a July 31st 2023 end date. I retained SG in my membership year--July 2023 by actually flying, and with future bookings, will retain SG anyway by December this year.
So would love the additional points over 2 domestic J lounge invites

And your thoughts on my post?

Golds get two domestic business lounge passes.

As for the rest of your post, I'd be using this latest snub by Qantas to revaluate whether I still wanted to fly with them. There's plenty of other airlines and loyalty programs that are useful if you fly to and from the USA on a regular basis.

Forgot to add something:

Not only do the Jan-Jun FF's get an extra 12 month extension, but they get a rollover into 2025 too!

Puts folks with a jul-dec anniversary at a massive disadvantage in terms of retaining.

Applied for status match with VA in Jan last year and for some weird reason I've still got gold with them. Haven't really compared the programs but VA seems to offer reasonable fares.

I wonder if anyone with a disadvantageous anniversary date AND paid retention would be interested in approaching Qantas, because this is such a scam. I would happy to collaborate and organise.

Cheers

No one is forcing anyone to fly QF, there are many airlines and loyalty schemes, unfortunately it's going to work better for some than others, their offerings have worked out for me with status retained until Oct 2023, but I won't be bothered with the $50.

While I understand and share the frustration, it s nothing new. At the previous extension announcments, it was another cohort of members, Jul-Dec, that had the best deal, with extension further in the future and rollover too, giving them the best headstart when fully utilizing the rollover.
Would be nice if Qantas would implement a status support that decrease month after month, to try and smooth the benefit over a longer period of time, instead of having a brutal change that will inevitably frustrate some members.

I think a way to ease off the extension support would be to do only one of extensions and status credit rollover not both.

The latest offers may be it, but nobody can be confident on what will happen next in this regard till we see how things go over the next ~6 months.

Has anyone had their status extension updated or know when that is likely to happen? Thanks

yep almost no need to treat one half of the year differently to the other - just give everyone the same.
