Qantas Business Class meals & menus

MEL-AKL 18th Nov, dinner flight on 737-800:
Flight massively delayed because the incoming flight had some technical issue with the door. Stayed in the Flounge at Melbourne so couldn't really complain and even managed to snag a massage from a brand spanking new menu:

After a devine hot stone massage, I was prepared for the late evening flight. Boarding at the gate was the usual mess and once on board, I could observe the great unwashed snaaaailing into the back which too what felt ages. I was keen to finally get going given I had to go into the office Tuesday morning and it was already getting far too late now.

Pre-departure champagne was offered and gladly accepted. The menu looked as follows:

Bad luck that I had been served lamb pies on my short Domestic connection just a couple of hours earlier so I really didn't feel like that again. All other main options were out so the big bowl of soup it would be which left only the Pate left as a starter. Drink orders for after departure were also taken and I ordered my usual delicious Bloody Mary.

The starter arrived and I was shocked to see that Qantas seriously seems to think that throwing a supermarket tub of a coughpy industrially-produced Pate onto your plate is a classy business class meal! they always do this for their ice cream already which is also "Maggie Beer" branded so that company must pay them serious $$$ to display their brand in this way. And make no mistake- there's absolutely nothing classy about Maggie Beer, it's the same processed conveyor belt stuff as the ice cream coming from Unlilever or Nestle. Just fold over the ice cream pack for the ingredients and count the E numbers if you don't believe me: I think it was 6 or 7 different ones. Very 'artisinal', sure.

Pate.jpg

I had this same soup once before on a Domestic flight but to my disappointment, it was less tasty on this flight and- needless to say- entirely unacceptable to be called a "Main dish" on an international flight.

Soup.jpg

The soup on the Domestic had some funky black Asian mushrooms all through it which was delicious while this version only featured a couple of halved mini tomatoes which was much more boring. Please note that the leaves are not basil but rather Kaffir Lime leaves. Which is nice and gives the soup some great flavor, just be careful not to bite on them!

As feared, we arrived super late into Auckland as a result of the delay and I carried my tiredness around all week. Flights were alright though and just the time in lounge at Melbourne alone made choosing Qantas worthwhile.

haha I got it in J previously and can't say I'm a big fan of Neils vinaigrette so it usually goes untouched 🤨

Neither am I. Try the one that gets catered out of Auckland- it usually contains one microscopic dribble of Balsamico and the rest is just olive oil (there are some images of that in earlier posts of mine). Absolutely ridiculous!

I was looking up an TR of mine for some information and came across the following photos I took of my meals on QF93 in November 2012.

Things have changed been enhanced somewhat in 7 years.
Here's what I had on the flight:

Starter:

qf107duck.jpg

(Duck and Pistachio Terrine with Spiced Apple Chutney and Watercress Salad)

Main:

qf107beef.jpg

(150 Day old Grain Fed Sirloin with Black Vinegar Vegetables, Fragrant Rice and Chilli Sauce, I washed this down with a Knappstein Cab. Sav.)

No photo of the cheese plate - it was quite reasonable.

Later in the flight I had one of the Ad Hoc snacks/refreshments, it was very good:

qf107tuna.jpg

(Glass Noodle Salad with Seared Yellowfin Tuna and Lemongrass Dressing)

For breakfast:

qf107breakfast.jpg

(Sauteed Mushrooms, Scrambled eggs, Sausage)

Well that is a depressing reminder of the good old times.

At least you got Pepe butter

A proper breakfast!

Friday 29th November, AKL-MEL, dinner service on A330-300:

The so-called 'First' part of the Qantas AKL lounge was once again absolutely dreadful with some pale chicken drumsticks as the only hot option so I was absolutely STARVING when I got onto the plane. I could immediately tell that the crew would be not as stellar as on my last flight out of Auckland though they were professional and friendly at all times. The dinner menu was one that I had not seen before which in itself is a lucky occurrence:
Menu.jpg

Luckily, this menu was pretty decent and as I am always happy to spot any pork, I decided to go for the Pithivier. But first the soup which turned out to be really garlicy which I liked but unfortunately it was also very very thick which was a bit off putting (it was a potato soup so admittedly, I shouldn't have been too surprised):
Soup.jpg

They had a Pithivier (fancy Qantas terms for a pie with a puff pastry crust) on their last menu which I didn't like too much due to the filling consisting mostly of spinach (yikes) but this one was much better: It talked about apple as the filling on the menu but I am pretty sure there was some cabbage in there too and the pork meat was decent cuts too so it was all pretty nice. A bit too small for my liking but still very tasty.

Main.jpg

I also had both the usual cheese and the ice cream but was still hungry after that so I asked for anything else to eat and I was lucky enough to get a leftover salad as well as a few packs of almonds and pretzels which then did the trick. Unfortunately, while friendly, the crew was otherwise rather slack and after meal service disappeared completely for ages. I once wanted to ask for a champagne refill and my cabin crew light was on for about 15 minutes without anyone noticing. I noticed a few other J class passengers also pinging for crew but to no avail. When I finally got up to walk down to the galley myself, I found the crew members happily chit chatting and drinking coffee simply ignoring the crew calls. I hate this kind of behavior even if I sit down the back but in Business? Totally unacceptable.

So a meh flight all in all- food was okay but too small the portions and the crew could hardly have been less attentive. Definitely had better Qantas flights before, but also worse.

Random observation but yesterday I had a couple packets of the Santos mix. I swear I had at least 10 almonds in one of them, and more than four in the other... A nice surprise :)

What makes a soup "sick"?

Breakfast CBR-MEL 6:20 flight. Only option was ham and fried eggs on English muffin.

Was excellent. Eggs just a little runny which is perfect for the muffin. Also on the tray was yoghurt. CSM used a trolley. No hand grenades on offer (not that I wanted it, just for reference).

I’d be quite happy if QF did all day breakfast catering on this route rather than the offcuts served for lunch and dinner.

The pork pie seems to be on every trans-Tasman menu! This was MEL- AKL the other day, 12:20 flight.

No pre-meal drink offered. Service was great especially from Stephen and Ariel. The CSM was fine but didn’t consult her iPad so just treated everyone the same.

Soup to start. Asked just for a cup but got the full deal. Very tasty.

Then had the crab. Nice.

Was intrigued by the combination of sauces and accompaniments for the lasagna so selected it, albeit with some trepidation.

Was terrific. Good portion, well cooked and the flavours all worked for me.

Boring old cheese to finIsh.

Good flight, in the main because of the constant and excellent service from Ariel who I have flown with regularly, and Stephen. Nothing was too much trouble.
