2 August, QF148 AKL-SYD
A tiny thimbleful of barely chilled Jacquart as a PDB (I'd had one tiny sip when this was taken). I got the impression they were eking out one bottle for the full A330 biz cabin, as they were in a hurry to clear away glasses and there was no sign of it on the trolley... though I didn't ask for more so that may be unfair.
Dinner service was dismal. I chose (perhaps poorly) the butter chicken (other main course option was apparently braised beef on mash), and it was sub-Y level food. (I remember MUCH nicer chicken curries in Y making quite a regular appearance on QF domestic about 4 or 5 years ago, whereas this was flavourless and joyless in the extreme.) Plus the inevitable cake in a box (an overly sugary choc/ginger thing) and Lindt ball.
Wine was the Forest Hill riesling which was passable. At least plenty of refils of that were offered.
Overall impression was basic, budget, minimum effort. Felt no better than a SYD-MEL A330 flight, other than the thimble of champagne. AirNZ's food is definitely worse than it used to be but it feels a LOT more like a real business class meal, even shorthaul. Would it kill them to offer some kind of appetiser? Even Neil's signature leaves would have been welcome
. Or a real dessert, rather than a cake in a box for a dinner time flight.
Even UA's Premium Plus (ie PE) food on the EWR-LAX transcon was nicer and felt more premium than this (though the drinks definitely didn't, lol).
As others have noted, also no pillows, which I find quite uncomfortable on the A330. All up, wished I'd saved my points.
QF short-haul biz is sad these days. Hoping for much better things on SYD-LAX later this month.
