Qantas Cash Card

You won't regret the Qantas card overseas...very useful. Points earn isn't so good when used locally.

Maybe you won't if you are worried about points. I am more concerned with cost and 28 Degrees Mastercard has no foreign exchange fees so will basically save you close to 3% on each transaction. :)

I think you may find that you dont earn any points on utility bills, bank charges etc. Paying Tax would likely fall under this.

Which transactions are eligible for Qantas Points?
You can earn Qantas Points on eligible purchases[SUP]1[/SUP] made using Qantas Cash.
Eligible purchases include all purchases of goods and services made using Qantas Cash, excluding:
• Purchases of gambling chips, betting transactions, money orders, travellers cheques and foreign currencies in cash;
• Any fees, adjustments, transfers between currencies or to another account made on your Qantas Cash facility;
• Any transaction that is reversed, refunded or charged-back; and
• Cash withdrawals from ATMs.

1. Points are earned on eligible purchases in accordance with the terms and conditions specified at qantascash.com. Eligible purchases do not include money orders, traveller’s cheques, gambling chips or purchasing foreign currencies in cash. You do not earn points when loading funds to your facility, transferring funds to another currency balance or another member’s facility or when withdrawing funds from ATMs or cashing out your facility balance. Purchases that are reversed, refunded or charged-back are also ineligible for points earn, in addition to fees incurred. It earned this a while ago...

Of course. The cards are just rated against each other. What Qantas may have forgot to mention was the the Velocity card also got 5 stars! http://www.canstar.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/travel-money-cards-jun-2014.pdf

Thanks for posting that link. :D Its nice that Cannex actually describe the methodology and weightings they use to come up with their transaction cost score, if only all comparison sites were as transparent as this when making pronouncements about 'best card/airline/loan' etc

As we all "already know"... Only downside is the time it takes to refund preauthorisations on the card for hotel checking.
But I like the earn rate using QCC overseas. And using my own money while at it too.

This is not an issue unique to Qantas Cash. You should not be using prepaid cards for pre-authorisations in general.

That's the same for any debit card. It's easy to pay cash than use a debit card...

But not a reason to rubbish Qantas Cash.

Don't get me wrong, not disagreeing with you. Qantas cash isn't the issue there. However for those unable to get a credit card here in Australia (which isn't me for the record), how are they supposed to deal with a pre-authorization?

Pay cash...

Good old-fashioned cash. Yes, I realise it is not the most practical or safe to carry large sums of cash around with you, but if you don't have the ability to get a credit card and don't want to wait for a pre-authorisation on a prepaid card to clear, then you have little other choice.

Try and ask to pay cash at sone hotels, they wont accept it.
Novotel Auckland for one.
Parkroyal Melbourne Airport will accept cash for pre autho though.
Will let others have their say now on this.
