Qantas Cash Card

Just get the Citibank or 28 degrees card. The value of the points gained from using a credit card or Qantas cash card will not outweigh the currency exchange fees that you will pay.

Bankwest Qantas Platinum has no forex commission, and $1 = 0.75 QF point. I just switched over, and Bankwest card is so much more reliable (28 Degree was declining transactions randomly, web site goes down all the time).

28 Degree charges ATM withdrawal fee even if your account is in credit (it's a credit card). You better off using Citibank Plus transaction account, which is a normal BSB account number daily transaction account, with no fee and no forex fee.

So it sounds like the bankwest does everything I need that the 28 degrees does, but also gives me QFF points. Is there any reason to get the 28 degrees over the bankwest?

28 degrees is really now only ok for purchases of goods/services, not cash as they now charge fees on that. However, it's exchange rates are still very good for purchases.

For cash look to the Bankwest card as mentioned earlier or the Citibank Plus Debit Visa.

Are you sure about the cash on the bankwest card? It looks like it is greater of 2% or $4?

Looks to me like 28 degrees has no QFF point but no annual fee. Bankwest gets the points but has $160 annual fee. The points would cover the fee if spending a lot, but I doubt I would spend enough to make it worthwhile so will stick to the 28 degree. I am happy with ANZ black cards for local spending but they are not great with forex so just looking to solve that problem.

I will also look into the citibank plus account. It looks like there is no one card that does everything for travellers. Need one for cash/debit and another for credit... unless I am reading this wrong?

You can use the Citibank Plus transaction account for everything if you like, as it comes with a Visa debit card, just that a few car rental or hotel security deposit, and all your own cash would be locked by the merchants, meaning you will run out of cash.

The thing with credit card is, you are using the bank's money, not your own money, so you can let car rental and hotels do as much security deposits as they like, but you still have your own cash for spending.

This is an interesting promo. The "Special rate" for USD is currently 0.7363. Which is still about 1.7% less than the 0.7495 you can currently get from a citibank plus transaction account with no atm fees for wdls from citibank atms around the world. No idea why anyone would use this card.

The card is useful to lock in the rate, but only if you think your currency is going to fall below the current 'card' rate. It was viable over the last couple of years while the Aussie was falling quickly, but no so much at the moment.

As it's been said before. Not everyone can or has a credit card. Not everyone changes their credit card just because they are going overseas. Not everyone signs up just for the points and then churns cards.
This is a half decent product for those that don't necessarily care about the approx 3-4% difference in currency charges.

Citibank plus is a debit card. $0 monthly fee as well.

We travel with the 28 degrees for credit card and citibank plus for cash. Neither charge fees for having, so apart from having two cards in your wallet there is not much downside. The other good thing about the citibank plus is that if you don't spend as much cash as anticipated, it is just left in the account in aussie dollars and easy to use, also very easy to transfer more in.

While cash cards could be useful if anticipating a drop in the dollar, with the current volatility, it is just as likely to go up, so why try and predict :).

I too got this same email today. I've already booked with QF to fly to the US shortly.
Three days ago I also got an email for "Load at least AU$1000 equivalent in foreign currency and we'll pack in 3,000 bonus Qantas Points*
For a limited time only - earn 3,000 bonus Qantas Points*
To get started:
- Register for the offer
- Apply to activate Qantas Cash
- Load at least AU$1,000 equivalent in foreign currency in one transaction within 14 days of receiving this email."

Is this points offer enough to entice anyone to load AU$1000?

Same here

The 5 points per overseas $ from Citi had not been enough to persuade me to use them on this occasion. It's kept in reserve only.

The table of foreign currencies shows that "Please note, as foreign exchange rates fluctuate daily, the Qantas Cash Seven Day Special rates will also fluctuate. The special rates will be preferential to the standard rates until 13 April 2016 - and you can keep an eye on how the rates are tracking in the table above."

Today the table is showing the USD (decreasing to) 0.7301 (from the 0.7363 quoted above), while over the last few days the market value has risen to 0.7552 yesterday and steady today. The QF quoted USD rate seems to be very slow in following market adjustments.

Don't know how long it's been active for, but money loading via a debit card is now active (for instant transfers). I think it was a 1% fee.

Transfer from a bank's transaction account is still free.
With some planning you don't need instant transfer at a 1% fee or surcharge.

Can't think of a good reason why you pay 1% to transfer from one debit card to another debit card!
