QF1509 MEL to HBA has been cancelled tonight as of 2100hrs with a flow on that tomorrow's (19/3) QF1500 HBA to MEL at 0605 is now cancelled.
As a result, thank you Boof, the 0815 hours QF1501 MEL to HBA on Saturday 19 March is delayed in departing until an expected 1015. Presumably Cobham (contractor) has rustled up a replacement aircraft.
Showing how these delays continue for much if not all of the day, the 1230 MEL - HBA, QF1503, is forecast to instead depart at 1345, 75 minutes late, even though the Saturday schedules are not quite as intensive as weekdays given lower numbers often travelling (bar an AFL football match or two) on Saturdays.
QF2258 (1145 BNE - LDH) should instead leave at 1245.
The forecast departure delay to QF1471 has now risen to 1115, meaning 80 minutes late. QF1473 on the same SYD - CBR route is now expected to depart at 1130, 35 minutes late.
QF2108 from SYD to CFS is suggested as departing at 1155, 35 minutes late. The PQQ-bound departure timed for 1245 will instead be at 1345 hours.
The already heavily delayed QF1501 from MEL to HBA has now been put back to a 1045 departure, two and a half hours late. See above for further earlier details.
QantasLink ex SYD operates many flights each day but lately it has been having a lot of trouble getting flights away on time. Some of this may be due to factors that the airline cannot control, such as weather (including occasionally down to 'one runway' operations) but is there also a systemic internal problem? Has this part of QF simply become 'too big for its own good?'
UPDATE: QF1501 departed from MEL at 1139, three hours and 24 minutes behind time (204 minutes.) QF1511 (B717 VH-NXE), the 1145 MEL - HBA was predicted to depart at 1240 but did not take off until 1309 and hence will not arrive until about 1411 in HBA, 71 minutes late.
QF1502 from HBA up to MEL should push back at 1315 instead of 1010.
The 1825 hours evening B&44 operating QF17 from SYD is expected to depart 50 minutes late at 1915 for LAX, but arrival should only be 25 minutes behind time. This is due to QF63, the 1135 SYD - JNB on Friday 18 March not departing until 1320 hours, arriving in South Africa at 1839 instead of 1635 and departing at 2038 compared with the timetable of 1850 for a predicted SYD Saturday 19 arrival of 1725, an hour and 45 minutes late.
These tight turnarounds are good for QF shareholders but can be sub-optimal for passengers. Granted though it is in everyone's interest for all airlines to earn a competitive (though not outlandish) return on shareholders' capital as continual losses discourage investment and may in some countries lead to less concentration on aircraft repairs or some aspects of safety.
