Qantas Delays/Cancellations

On Saturday 19 March, QF2248, the 0715 SYD to LDH is delayed until an expected 0900 hours departure. QF2040 is forecast to depart SYD 70 minutes late at 0910 for the western plains in DBO. QF2205, the 0820 to ABX will depart SYD at an amended 0910.

QF1471 (0955 SYD - CBR) will instead leave at 1035. QF2022 (1210 SYD - ARM) is delayed in departing by an expected 40 minutes.

QF1509 MEL to HBA has been cancelled tonight as of 2100hrs with a flow on that tomorrow's (19/3) QF1500 HBA to MEL at 0605 is now cancelled.

As a result, thank you Boof, the 0815 hours QF1501 MEL to HBA on Saturday 19 March is delayed in departing until an expected 1015. Presumably Cobham (contractor) has rustled up a replacement aircraft.

Showing how these delays continue for much if not all of the day, the 1230 MEL - HBA, QF1503, is forecast to instead depart at 1345, 75 minutes late, even though the Saturday schedules are not quite as intensive as weekdays given lower numbers often travelling (bar an AFL football match or two) on Saturdays.

QF2258 (1145 BNE - LDH) should instead leave at 1245.

The forecast departure delay to QF1471 has now risen to 1115, meaning 80 minutes late. QF1473 on the same SYD - CBR route is now expected to depart at 1130, 35 minutes late.

QF2108 from SYD to CFS is suggested as departing at 1155, 35 minutes late. The PQQ-bound departure timed for 1245 will instead be at 1345 hours.

The already heavily delayed QF1501 from MEL to HBA has now been put back to a 1045 departure, two and a half hours late. See above for further earlier details.

QantasLink ex SYD operates many flights each day but lately it has been having a lot of trouble getting flights away on time. Some of this may be due to factors that the airline cannot control, such as weather (including occasionally down to 'one runway' operations) but is there also a systemic internal problem? Has this part of QF simply become 'too big for its own good?'

UPDATE: QF1501 departed from MEL at 1139, three hours and 24 minutes behind time (204 minutes.) QF1511 (B717 VH-NXE), the 1145 MEL - HBA was predicted to depart at 1240 but did not take off until 1309 and hence will not arrive until about 1411 in HBA, 71 minutes late.

QF1502 from HBA up to MEL should push back at 1315 instead of 1010.

The 1825 hours evening B&44 operating QF17 from SYD is expected to depart 50 minutes late at 1915 for LAX, but arrival should only be 25 minutes behind time. This is due to QF63, the 1135 SYD - JNB on Friday 18 March not departing until 1320 hours, arriving in South Africa at 1839 instead of 1635 and departing at 2038 compared with the timetable of 1850 for a predicted SYD Saturday 19 arrival of 1725, an hour and 45 minutes late.

These tight turnarounds are good for QF shareholders but can be sub-optimal for passengers. Granted though it is in everyone's interest for all airlines to earn a competitive (though not outlandish) return on shareholders' capital as continual losses discourage investment and may in some countries lead to less concentration on aircraft repairs or some aspects of safety.

QF4 from HNL, into SYD on the evening of Saturday 19 March should arrive at 2100, 55 minutes behind time. VH-EBL (A332) is the aircraft.

QF17, the late (refer above) 1825 SYD to LAX did not take off until 2004 but arrival is estimated to be less than half an hour late.

Adding to eminere's post above, QF suggests that it departed at 1931 with arrival of QF5 on 20 March in SIN likely at 0040, two hours and 10 minutes late. This is expected to delay the 2350 hours Saturday 19 March QF6 from SIN to become an 0155 hours Sunday 20 departure with SYD arrival forecast for 1255 on Sunday afternoon instead of 1055 late morning.

At this stage, this aircraft appears to be returning to SIN ex SYD on QF5 tomorrow (Sunday) so no further delays should (in theory) eventuate from the late return of QF6. However as always, aircraft rotations (rosters) can change closer to the hour of travel as can gate allocations so when one A330 is late with QFi, it can be a good idea to keep a lookout on one's smartphone or email for notification of any delays.

On Sunday 20 March, QF1555 (0800 SYD - ADL) departed at 0846, with arrival an estimated 41 minutes behind time at 1016.

QF520 (1105 SYD - BNE, B738 VH-VYF) took off at 1152 and should arrive about 35 minutes behind time at 1210.

QF35 (1220 hours MEL - SIN) departed 64 minutes late and should arrive at 1810, 45 down.

UPDATE: The 1505 hours SYD - BNE, QF532, departed 130 minutes late at 1715. Arrival is suggested as 1741, two hours and six minutes late.

QF1515 (1525 hours SYD short hop to CBR) departed at 1653. Arrival was 73 minutes behind time at 1738. A later flight, QF1525 has been delayed departing from 1850 to a forecast 1945 tonight.

QF1520, the 1705 CBR back to SYD was airborne at 1835 hours with arrival suggested as 1937, 97 minutes late in the hands of VH-YQV, a B717. At 1902 on Sunday 20 it was in a holding pattern above Gunning NSW so it may be even later at the SYD gate.

The 1725 hours from SYD to MRZ, QF2192, has been cancelled. How on earth do passengers get there - wait until a flight tomorrow?

The 1910 hours MEL to LST, QF2289 has been cancelled.

QF493, 1915 hours SYD down to MEL will instead depart at 1950.

On Monday 21 March, QF502, the early morning 0635 hours SYD to BNE is not running.

QF2452, the even earlier (in local time) 0605 BNE to MOV is also cancelled, as is QF1762, the 0900 northwards to MKY ex the Sunshine State's capital. Later, the 1330 BNE - ROK (QF1738) has also got the gong.

So have QF2454, the mid afternoon 1510 BNE also to MOV, and QF1742 also to 'Rocky' at a normally timetabled 1715 hours.

Adding to the troubles on QF's Moranbah (Queensland) mining route with two cancellations today (see above), QF2450, the 0720 BNE to MOV is expected to depart at 0815.

QF575, the 0810 hours SYD - PER eparted at 0840 and should arrive 32 minutes behind time at 1037.

QF2320 from BNE to BDB is delayed departing from 0810 to 0900. QF2326, the mid morning 1015 BNE to BDB is cancelled.

QF2205 from SYD to ABX on Friday 18 March is delayed in departing from 0820 to an expected 1225.

The 1005 hours SYD to BNE, QF605, is forecast to depart at 1040.

The 1020 MEL to LAX QF93 has been altered to depart at 1205. Arrival in the movie capital is estimated as 0745 hours same day, 70 minutes late.

QF2130, the 1130 MEL to CBR is cancelled while QF2283, the 1135 MEL to LST is delayed until an expected 1210 in departing.

UPDATE: QF453, the 1700 from SYD to MEL (A332 VH-EBC) was airborne at 1750 and is arriving at 1910 hours, 35 minutes late. QF459, the 1800, departed SYD 32 late but should only be 18 minutes late (1953) at MEL.

QF463 and QF467, respectively the 1830 and 1930 hours from SYD to MEL have both been cancelled. QF479, the 1845 hours, is forecast to depart SYD at 1925 while QF465 should be half an hour late departing at 1930 and QF493 os delayed by 55 minutes to 2010 hours from SYD to MEL. There have been reasonably strong winds in MEL (and rain) so perhaps that is a reason why flights are cancelled or delayed.

The Grand Prix is attracting a declining number of visitors (and locals) and losing at least $60 million per annum, but these flights may have some patrons. It would be great if anyone who was 'bumped' could inform AFF members how they are getting to MEL. JQ also has delays and a cancellation from SYD to MEL this evening.

Northbound is no better with QF454 (the 1730 hours ex MEL) an estimated 35 minutes late, QF496 45 minutes late, QF486 (the 1815 hours northbound) 35 minutes behind time and QF460 (the 1830) and QF478 (the 1845 hours) both an estimated 40 late.

Having flown MEL-SYD on Friday afternoon, the winds were impacting operations at both ends. We seemed to land towards the west (from the east) in SYD - I cant even recall the last time that happened. I'm sure others can chime in as to how common (or not) that is.

The East-West runway is not used a lot, but they do try to use it when winds are favourable. I have had aircraft coming in to land above me as I pass through Rockdale more often than from coming in over The Lakes Golf Course. But I have seen even the four-engine jets lining up to land on the cross runway.

docjames and OATEK, many thanks. As OATEK says, use is uncommon: less than five per cent of the time in this quarterly period in this link (see page 15):

Just checked FR24 - yes, landed from east.

QF will be happy too - departed 34m late but arrived only 12 mins late to schedule (therefore on time by industry measure).

QF2225 from SYD to WGA on 21 March was forecast to depart half an hour late at 1215, but departed at 1221 for a forecast half hour late arrival time of 1335.

QF19 from SYD to MNL, the 1225, will instead depart at 1320 hours. QF claims that arrival will only be 20 minutes late but one difficulty with such an optimistic forecast is that MNL's airspace is typically congested much of the time. While it is not alone among Asian airports with that, its runway configurations may result in arrivals holding for a while even in good weather.

UPDATE: The publicly shown QF19 delay has now changed to 1400, but it is 1413 as I write.

The Monday 21 March QF19 departed from SYD at 1414, an hour and 49 minutes late, with arrival expected at 1925, an hour and 55 late. The returning QF20 is forecast to depart from MNL at 2040 instead of 1900 tonight, arriving on Tuesday 22 at a predicted 0730, 80 minutes late.

The Monday 21 March arriving QF10 is due in at 2145 to MEL, 25 minutes late so expect QF9 to be slightly delayed as its timetabled pushback is 2325. While an hour and 40 minutes is achievable for an A380 turnaround, it is more or less equal to the fastest that I have observed so it relies on everything - freight, luggage, passengers, mechanical and electrical componentry, crewing, fuelling, catering and even our friends at ATC - all meshing together pretty much perfectly. That said, QF9 like QF1 is often observed to pick up time en route due to the now slower schedules.

QF12 Sun 20/3. Cargo door problem so delayed departure till 2315, scheduled 2230.

According to QF, flight 12 on Sunday evening departed LAX at 2306 and should only be 20 minutes late into SYD on Tuesday 22 March at 0750 hours.

On Monday 21 March, QF826 from MEL to CBR departed 63 minutes late at 1718 and arrived 57 minutes behind at 1817 hours.

QF1904 (1350 hours PER north to KTA) departed at 1423 with arrival 34 minutes behind time at 1624.

QF693, the 1640 hours MEL - ADL departed at 1723, arriving 29 minutes late at 1759. The returning QF694 arrived back in MEL at 2026 hours, 36 late while the folloiwng flight, QF696, the 1950 hours ex ADL is expected to instead depart at 2040 local time this evening.

QF1742, the 1715 BNE to ROK was again cancelled.

On Tuesday 22 March, QF81 from SYD to SIN is delayed in its departure from 1115 to an expected 1150 hours.

Due to QF19 from SYD to MNL, the 1225, on Monday 21 not departing until 1414, the returning QF20 did not leave MNL until 2132 (two hours 43 minutes late) and will arrive SYD on 22 March at 0832 instead of 0610 hours.

UPDATE: QF1578 (1740 hours SYD - MCY) departed at 1812 with arrival forecast as 1845, half an hour behind time.

QF23 from SYD departed 61 minutes late at 1056 for BKK: arrival should be 50 minutes late at 1625.

QF741 (1035 SYD across to ADL) departed 39 minutes late at 1114 but arrival was only 24 down at 1234. However this flight is still regarded as 'late' by the BITRE.

The SYD- SIN QF81 ended up not departing until 1213, 58 minutes late and a greater delay than predicted above, with arrival suggested as 40 minutes tardy at 1710 hours.

While QF1 on Monday 21 March departed LHR only seven minutes late at 2042, it arrived DXB 34 late and departed 29 late so on Wednesday 23 March it should arrive 35 minutes late at 0705.

The SYD - CBR route is (at least for point to point travellers) Australia's intercapital air route that is most substitutable by surface transport (driving, rail or even bus.)

On Wednesday 23 March it is suffering from some serious delays, probably due to fog as the BOM had predicted some. Is this CBR's first autumnal fog for calendar 2016?

QF1511, the early morning 0625 hours has been altered to depart SYD at 1040 for CBR. Including travelling time and checkin mandatory times, this will take these passengers longer than any surface mode would. If it was surface public transport operated by or for a government entity, a compensation regime would typically apply.

QF1471 should closely follow as QF suggests that it will depart at 1050 in lieu of 0955. QF1479 this afternoon should depart at 1325 instead of 1245.

Down south, QF1528 (1030 hours MEL - CBR) has been cancelled while further north, QF1568 (1105 SYD to OOL) also suffered the same fate.

UPDATE: QF1511 departed SYD at 1102, 277 minutes late, arriving CBR at 1146, 261 minutes behind time.

QF2024 (1045 hours SYD to ARM) was 34 minutes late departing at 1219 but managed to arrive 20 minutes behind time at 1220.

This afternoon, QF1515, the 1525 SYD to CBE departed at 1742, arriving at 1823, an hour and 58 minutes late. Again, quicker to go by train or drive depending on from where one was coming.

This evening, QF1525 also down to CBR should leave SYD an hour and 50 minutes late at 2030. QF479 (1845 hours SYD to MEL) is anticipated to depart at 1915, 30 minutes late.

The 1905 hours SYD north to BNE, QF648, is delayed until an expected 1950 in departing.

Continuing the late running on CBR routes, QF1536, the 1745 ex MEL is predicted to push back at 1850.

QF2344, the 1720 hours flight from BNE north to GLT should instead depart at 1800 AEST.

Tuesday 22 March's QF9 did not depart from MEL until 0019 on Wednesday 23 March, arriving DXB 77 minutes late at 0747 - a 'famous' time. Departure was then 55 minutes late at 0930 but in another demonstration of the slack timings in place since QF altered the timetables for the 'northern winter', it is predicted to only be five minutes late arriving in LHR at 1300.

QF10 into MEL is expected 25 minutes late at 2145 on 23 March so once again QF9 will be at least minimally delayed from its 2325 timetabled departure.
