Qantas Delays/Cancellations

In further on Thursday 22 November, QF51, the normally punctual 1150 hours BNE up to SIN is expected to depart an hour late with arrival at 1850, 55 late.

Thursday 22 November 2018 sees dust storms in and around Sydney while WNW winds gusting up to 57kmh at the airport mean most aircraft are using runway 25.

QF19, the 1225 hours SYD - MNL did not become airborne until 1334 hours. It has A332 VH-EBO and should arrive at 1826 hours, 56 late.

B738 VH-VZP on the 1200 'high noon' SYD to BNE QF524 followed, airborne at 1336, so its arrival will be 1334, 64 minutes behind schedule. QF751, the 1155 hours late morning SYD across to ADL is a couple of aircraft behind and has VH-XZD so it will be similarly late into the wine capital.

In more on a windy (and dusty) Thursday 22 November in Sydney, QF433 (1230 hours SYD down to MEL, B738 VH-VYB) had not taken off by 1421 (long past its scheduled MEL arrival of 1405), so it will be at least 80 minutes late.

QF435 and QF528, respectively the timetabled 1300 hours departures to MEL and up to BNE were just behind in the runway 25 queue so expect each to be at least an hour late.

Continuing with the windy Thursday 22 November 2018 in Sydney, QF117 (1550 hours SYD - HKG) is predicted to depart 70 minutes late.

Showing how bad the delays in Sydney with 22 November 2018's adverse winds are, B738 (yuk!) VH-VZG on QF43, the 1655 hours SYD - DPS departed at 1713 - moderately late - but did not manage to take off until 1757. Normally 20 - 25 minutes is the allowance for this. Arrival is predicted at 2112, 52 late.

QF444, the mid afternoon 1530 hours MEL up to SYD took off at 1620 with arrival of VH-VYB suggested as 1820 hours, 85 minutes late.

The 1630 hours SYD down to MEL (QF449, VH-VZE) was airborne at 1743 so a 1901 arrival is the prediction (subject to not being in a holding pattern). This would be 56 late.

QF541, the 1505 hours BNE down to SYD was in the sky at 1633 with B738 VH-VYE. Predicted arrival is 1844, 64 late but there is some holding occurring so it may turn out to be later.

Delays are not restricted to SYD routes. QF628, the 1710 hours MEL up to BNE took off at 1807 - B738 VH-XZB - and should arrive at about 1907, 47 minutes late.

QF453 (1700 hours peak time SYD down to MEL, A332 VH-EBQ) did not become airborne until 1828, so arrival is estimated as 1957 hours, 82 late.

QF1, the 22 November 1700 hours SYD to SIN and LHR flagship pushed back at 1717 but testamount to the Sydney wind delays, arrival is not suggested until 2252 late tonight, 47 late.

The 1715 hours SYD - MRZ, QF2192, took off at 1833 so arrival is suggested as 1953, 63 late. QF2193 returning will be similarly delayed. Interesting that QF doesn't appear to have crew overnighting at Moree: one would think (subject to SYD slot availability) there'd be an 0630 out of there on weekday mornings, but no.

QF545 on 22 November (scheduled 12605 hours BNE down to SYD that was in the sky at 1718 hours with B738 VH-VXT) is arriving at 2001 hours, 81 late.

The 1615 hours MEL to SYD (QF468, B738 VH-VZK) took off at 1825 and is arriving at 2008 hours, 148 late.

QF1522 from CBR to SYD, the 1825 hours was not in the sky until 2039. B717 VH-YQU is arriving at 2108, 108 late.

The 1635 hours BNE down to SYD, QF547, is worse with B738 VH-VXQ expected to be at its destination gate at 2117 hours, 127 late.

A QFi flight I earlier omitted, QF81, the 1130 hours SYD - SIN departed on Thursday 22 November at 1140, only ten minutes late but arrived at 1748, 63 late.

QF117 was 56 late away from blocks in SYD at 1646 hours with HKG arrival suggested as 2332 hours, 77 late.

Number 8 B787-900 VH-ZNH “Great Barrier Reef” has recently crossed the coast near BNE on its delivery flight PME-MEL and now over Tenterfield at 21:11 hrs. It is unfortunately delayed due to a 2hr late departure.

QF6026

Tonight (22 November), QF459 (1800 hours SYD down to MEL was cancelled.

So was QF477, the 1815 hours and QF479, the 1845 ex SYD. QF493, the 1915 hours to MEL was another one to get the boot. QF467, the 1930 southbound is predicted to depart at 2125. QF489, the 2000 hours is suggested as departing at 2215. QF491 (2030 hours) is expected to be 80 late departing. In these circumstances a dispensation is not guaranteed.

Strangely the last for the night, QF497, the 2205 hours from SYD to MEL is predicted to depart only 15 minutes late.

The 1955 hours SYD - PER (QF583) departed at 2101 with arrival suggested as 2252 tonight, 62 late.

QF1726, the 2000 hours northbound from SYD up to BNE was another cancellation. QF522, the 2030 hours has suffered the same fate.

QF1585 (1855 hours SYD to HBA) is predicted to depart at 2150.

QF846 (2025 hours SYD - DRW) should depart 85 minutes late.

The 2055 hours SYD across to ADL, QF785 is also cancelled.

The 1945 hours mid evening SYD - OOL, QF864 should depart at 2215. Only Queensland not being on daylight saving stops it from becoming a close to midnight arrival given the queueing for departure on runway 25.

I haven't listed every cancelled flight (and bear in mind QF does not have a monopoly) so around Australia there must be thousands who are not reaching their intended destination tonight. Local residents and those visiting friends and relatives can return home or to friends/family but one feels for others (businessmen/women and tourists) who may in some cases have difficulty securing an hotel or AirBnB room.

As often the case, MEL - SYD - MEL, our most popular route is the worst hit by far.

As noted above, Thursday 22 November's QF491 was predicted to depart from SYD (for MEL) at 2150 (80 late) but at 2214 was still taxiing along runway 34R for what looks to be takeoff at around 2220.

The last two MEL-SYD flights were cancelled yesterday. Last night the business class lounge was a stand up only room.

Most flights today (if not all) will be at full capacity. Weather in Melbourne last night didn’t help either!

This seems to mainly be international flights but the last flight of the day Mel - Adelaide is always late due to non arrival of new crew from another flight. Last night an hour late departing except my Qantas Ap did not recognise that. It showed as as boarding then gate closed while we were still in the building. Then at the 30 minute mark after original departure, the flight simply disappeared and my next flight appeared. It also removed my digital boarding pass I hadn’t used yet obviously. Luckily I had my Qantas card as otherwise I had no proof.

Seems like the main networks within SYD and MEL are still trying to recover from the weather which is not easing up. There seems to be longer flight times due to weather conditions and holding patterns.
The list of delayed and cancelled are extensive but here are some:

QF402 MEL-SYD (VH-VYI) left at 8 50 (65 late), arrived to Sydney at 10 20 (70 min late). This also delayed QF516 SYD-BNE which departed at 11 27 (87 min behind), landing at 11 36 (66 late).
QF732 ADL-SYD (VH-VXM) departed at 8 10am (80 tardy), landed at 10 36am, 81 min late. This has impacted QF1019 SYD-HBA which departed at 11 44am (111 min behind), arrived at 1 18pm (88 late).
QF414 MEL-SYD (VH-VXI) left at 9 35am (95 late), arrived at 11 10am (105 min tardy). This affected QF425 SYD-MEL which departed 12 34pm (124 min behind) and arrived to Melbourne at 1 41pm (96 min tardy).
QF581 SYD-PER (VH-EBO) left at 1 03pm (162 behind) expected to land at 2 36pm (136 min late).
QF7 SYD-DFW (VH-OQC) left at 3 40pm (60 min late), expected to touch down at 1 31pm (31 min tardy).

Also on Friday 23 November (a constantly drizzly day in Melbourne, better than the dust storms Sydney has had though) QF64 from JNB to SYD (B744 VH-OEJ) is arriving at 1632 hours, 57 late.

The 1410 hours MEL up to BNE (QF620, B738 VH-VZB) took off at 1544 so arrival is an estimated 75 minutes tardy at 1635 hours.

QF433, the 1230 hours lunchtime SYD down to MEL did not become airborne until 1520, mid afternoon. B738 VH-VYG is arriving at 1636 hours, 151 minutes behind schedule.

The 1330 hours SYD - MEL (QF437) was in the sky at 1538 with VH-VXF. Arrival should be at 1651 hours, 106 minutes late.

VH-XZE on QF439, the 1400 hours timetabled ex Sydney is not much better with takeoff at 1545 meaning projected southern state capital arrival at 1655 hours, 80 late.

A332 VH-EBJ on QF577, the 1410 hours SYD across to PER was airborne at 1610 (about 100 minutes tardy) so arrival is predicted to be 1755, 110 late.

In more on Friday 23 November, QF23, the often tardy 1030 hours SYD up to BKK departed 18 late at 1048 but arrival at 1655 this afternoon local time will be 45 minutes behind schedule.

QF692 (23 November 2018, the 1555 hours ADL - MEL) has B738 VH-VYB and took off at 1719. It is arriving at 1856, 71 late.

The 1715 hours MEL up to CBR, QF834 (VH-VXG) took off at 1838 and should be at its destination gate at 1932, 72 minute behind schedule.

A332 VH-EBF on the SYD to MEL QF453 is arriving at 1910, 40 late.

Well my 1940 de ex-BNE is now a 2220 departure with a nice (not) MEL arrival of 0140.

Annoying as if told this morning i could have travelled tomorrow (early), now i’m stuck with “you wont get a seat for two days” if you dont take it......

This one is going to take a while for all airlines to recover their schedules / pax travel......

Doc, yes, if the problematic weather had occurred on a Tuesday and Wednesday, passengers would have been more eaily accommodated, with less overflow onto Thursday because Tues and Wed are the quietest midweek days.

QF623 (1510 hours BNE down to MEL, B738 VH-VZO), was airborne at 1621 so it should be at its destination gate at 1929, 59 late.

Another SYD - PER, QF569 has B738 VH-VYK and looks to be arriving at around 2032, 112 late.

One does sit here wondering looking at the cancelled flights into/out of SYD whether a 747 could have been pulled from the jet base to clear a backlog to either/both MEL and BNE, but i’m sure if it was that simple it would be done. Aircraft and crew availability no doubt the first two issues with that plan. Amongst others.
