Qantas Delays/Cancellations

One does sit here wondering looking at the cancelled flights into/out of SYD whether a 747 could have been pulled from the jet base to clear a backlog to either/both MEL and BNE, but i’m sure if it was that simple it would be done. Aircraft and crew availability no doubt the first two issues with that plan. Amongst others.

On days like today (not so much on a Saturday if weather is 'normal'), slot availability would be among the secondary problems, and so might gate availability at each end. One return B744 trip would not clear all the waiting passengers - but it would help.

Well in saying that, VA has been using their A330s in a few MEL-SYD legs today. That tells you that they are in a clear rush to try to get everybody home.

QF444, the 23 November (Friday) 1745 hours from MEL up to SYD took off at 1936. B738 VH-VZS should be at its arrival gate at roughly 2042, 92 late.

VH-VYJ on QF446 (the 1600 hours MEL - SYD is worse with takeoff at 1942 tonight. Arrival is an estimated 2050 instead of 1725 hours, so an incredible 205 minutes tardy.

QF571 (A332 VH-EBQ, the 1740 hours transcon from SYD across to PER) took off at 1721 with arrival likely at 2202 hours, 147 minutes behind schedule.

Yet again, the last 2 SYD-MEL services (QF499, QF497) are both cancelled.
MEL-SYD legs cancelled today include from 7pm onwards, meaning QF462, QF484, QF464, QF466,QF490, QF492 and QF494.
QF478, the 6 45pm service is the last one leaving, expected to depart at 8 45pm.

Continuing the long list of cancellations,s QF822 MEL-CBR 7 40pm was cancelled.

QF846 SYD-DRW 8 25pm service was cancelled.
QF864 SYD-OOL 7 45pm service as well.

QF694 ADL-MEL 5 55pm service (VH-XXZB) just left at 8 10pm (135 min tardy), expected to land at 9 47pm (122 tardy).

QF2132 MEL-CBR 6 05pm service just left at 9 06, 181 min late. Should be arriving about 10 06 pm (164 tardy).

QF468 MEL-SYD 4 15pm service departed at 8 52pm, 277 min tardy. It is expected to land around 9 55pm, 255 min behind. VH-VXT is the rego.

Also QF756 ADL-SYD 3 30pm service left at 7 27pm today (237 min tardy), just landed in Syd at 9 36pm, a very 221 min late flight (VH-VZR).

QF693 MEL-ADL 4 50pm service just departed at 9 34pm, expected to land 10 08 (268 min late. VH-VYZ is the rego.

I’m pretty grateful that I’m not flying today, that’s for sure. delays have been pretty extensive.

QF767 BNE-PER has just cancelled at 2115 (was sched 1955).

Apparently 5 hotel rooms left at the Rydges Brisvegas. My colleagues got three of them.

Now rescheduled to 1115 Saturday departure.

And hello from the inflight wifi aboard QF641 (the 1840 which departed approx 2240). At approx 2225 there were a sequence of calls by name in the J Lounge to move I assume the “highest ranking” (?) WPs etc from QF637 which subsequently was announced as cancelled at 2230.

Note there appears to be a few cabin crew aboard paxing to MEL, no doubt either positioning home or positioning for tomorrow’s services.

This might be shaping up to be a repeat of last year (3 hour delay on QF38 for flight home from holiday) if the A330s are out of position and flights to SIN are delayed tomorrow.

Well some flights departed and landed in Sydney post curfew time which has helped with today’s departures and arrivals. So we should see things slowly normalising.

And glad you made it to Melb @docjames. At least you weren’t left in Bris.

As someone booked on QF637 that was the case. As I live in Brisbane I just asked to be transferred to a morning flight rather than arriving at 2 in the morning.

Interesting. Did they bail you out early or at 2230?

My luggage of course didn’t make it but i was heading home so no biggie although queuing at 230am to get that sorted was painful. But i could see it happening and beat most (about 10 pax) to the queue.

A bit frustrating as at ~515 I asked to change flights and was told nothing available for two days. I suspect the lounge dragon i asked was just over it after a day of issues. Which was fair enough.

The ones left late that finally moved me to 641 were very helpful and pleasant.

On Saturday 24 November, QF35 (A380 VH-OQJ, the 1220 hours MEL up to SIN that took off at 1319) should arrive at about 1814 hours, 69 minutes late.

These cancellations have wrecked son’s Australian wedding reception today. He used to live in Sydney. Most of those guests aren’t coming now. One couple caught train to Newcastle then flight to Brisbane yesterday. Overnight in dodge city then fly Brisbane Adelaide this morning. 9.30? flight cancelled. Just now learnt that 1pm flight cancelled. Now he’s damn well stuck in Brisbane and will miss wedding reception. He was groomsman at son’s wedding in UK.

Some individuals have busy lives but it has always struck me as unwise to travel same day interstate for weddings, given that (unlike funerals) one normally has many weeks' notice of the occasion.

Actually they were all very wise. All their flights were cancelled yesterday. So one couple caught a train to Newcastle yesterday when their flight was cancelled then a flight to Brisbane. Overnighted in BNE then due to catch early morning flight to Adelaide. Flight cancelled. Rebooked them for 1pm just now. Flight cancelled. So not only have they missed the wedding they are stuck in Brisbane. The rest abandoned getting out yesterday when their flights were cancelled.

Sorry, I’m just a bit cranky atm :(

QF25 stopped in Brisbane last night to collect 100 pax that originally were originating in a city other than SYD and were rerouted to BNE instead where QF25 dropped into collect them. Avoiding the Sydney “fun” in the process. Clever ops by QF!
