Qantas Delays/Cancellations

On Monday 5 September 2022, QF75, the evening 2025 hours long haul to YVR has been cancelled. One swallow doesn't make a summer, but three posts above, I praised this flight and its return QF76. Ironic.

QF63 (0935 hours SYD-JNB, B789 VH-ZNH) was airborne at 1040 so arrival should be at 1629 hours, 49 minutes behind schedule. The aircraft had only been 25 late arriving as the ex-DFW QF8 at 0700 hours.

I flew home on QF94 on Wednesday night (arrived Friday morning).

Flight was on time. Landed ~6am.

I had carry-on baggage. Walked in the door at home at 7:05am.

Colleague had checked baggage. Didn't get his bag / leave the airport until 7:30am.

Plenty of other (non-Qantas) flights arrived at the same time, and their pax got their bags almost immediately.
 
eminere, leftie ex-journalist Michael West can't get some basic facts correct as he claims QFi only has 'three' Airbus A388s in action, but he claims due to some Airbus Industrie directive, possible cracks in the "spar" (main structural member, apparently) of the wings of Airbus A388s are being investigated and may see two of its "three" A388 aircraft out of service for 50 calendar days. (He understates the operable QFi A388 fleet size).

He claims CASA have published this European safety agency directive.

I'd take anything he says with a grain of salt but he has published it.
 
Monday 5 September's QF11 (A388 VH-OQD), the 1015 hours SYD-LAX departed at 1148, so will be at least 50 minutes late arriving same day.

Tuesday 6's same flight is a B789 that has been altered to depart at 2215 late at night, 12 hours late.
 
I couldn't agree more with what you say, eminere: how can rivals like SQ and a host of others typically get us to our destinations punctually or not far off it, yet so often as documented in these pages, a flight like QF1 can't? Even the MEL-PER-LHR and return QF9/10 aren't as timely as they were pre-COVID-19

QF7 departure on Sunday was delayed departing to 7pm. On arrival into DFW there must have atleast 60 pax with missed connections based on the envelopes with new connections and hotel accom details. The SST had contacted me in the afternoon prior to departure with flight options and had arranged a hotel (Westin) for the night.
 
Continuing with Sunday 4 September, QF1 took off from SYD at 2105 hours, more than three hours after its previously estimated revised departure time.

The SIN stop is likely from (Monday 5) 0257 hours, 282 minutes late.

A388 VH-OQH was in SIN from 0241 hours to takeoff at a further delayed 0636 hours, so estimated LHR arrival becomes 1206 hours, 331 minutes tardy on Monday 5 September.

The delayed QF11 (SYD-LAX) should arrive today (local LAX time) 90 late at 0830 hours.
 
In more on 5 September, QF7 (1540 hours SYD-DFW) is delayed in pushback until at least 2130 mid evening. This will mean a delay to the same day departing QF8 ex DFW, despite the generous turnaround allowed in the timetable.

It is unusual for QF6 from FCO to be delayed, but on Sunday 4 this 1050 hours flight was in the sky at 1248, arriving PER today at 0952 hours, 77 minutes tardy. It pointed skywards from the WA capital at 1142 hours, arriving SYD at 1709, 64 behind schedule.

Aircraft VH-ZNF (B789) is as usual returning to FCO via PER, with SYD departure predicted as 40 minutes late at 1835 hours, not bad in the circumstances but perhaps a little on the optimistic side as that would mean an 86 minute turnaround. From those observed (an incomplete list), 'reversals' tend to take at least 105 minutes, and departing during a peak period may not help with super prompt ATC clearance (apart from the issue of insufficient controllers reporting for work, causing temporary further limitations on movement numbers).

One I omitted for tonight is that QF2 from LHR (A388 VH-OQB) has just arrived in SIN at 1730, five minutes late but pushback for SYD is delayed until a forecast 2250, 200 minutes later than the scheduled 1930. This will be due to the flight crew having had insufficient mandated rest hours due to another flight having been late, I assume. It's a disadvantage of QFi no longer operating 'the 9' and 'the 10' through SIN with an A388 as arguably this might deliver a little more operational flexibility.

QF5 (B789 VH-ZNF) took off from SYD tonight at 1941 with estimated PER gate arrival sugegsted as 2207, 77 behind. However it may pick up time on the flight to FCO so at a guess if it doesn't overstay its PER welcome mat, the passengers and crew may be in Rome by 0900 hours local time on Tuesday 6.

QF11 on Tuesday is delayed until 22:25. The QF11/12 was supposed to be operated daily by 388 but 789 is being used every 2nd day. OQJ is out of action.

This is also the reason for the QF75 being delayed until tomorrow night.

What happens to the surplus of passengers once the accommodated tally on the B789 reaches 236?
 
VH-OQB on Monday 5 September was airborne from SIN at 2304 on QF2, so arrival this morning in SYD was at 0802 hours, 172 minutes behind the 0510 timetabled stipulation.

B789 VH-ZND on yesterday's QF7 from SYD to DFW took off at 2143 hours with at gate arrival suggested as 2153 hours on the same day, 353 minutes late. The returning 2250 hours QF8 is predicted to depart at 2325, again probably optimistic.

'The 5' last night was in PER from 2151 to 2344 hours, with arrival today in Rome estimated as 0909, 24 late, picking up time en route as I suggested above.

QF11 from SYD to LAX was to be delayed until 2225 tonight in pushback, 735 minutes late but it's suddenly displaying as 'cancelled.'

Um, I read him as saying only three of the Qantas A380s are affected by this directive.

Qantas sponsored ARU charter to Auckland and Buenos Aires (EZE) operated by B789 VH-ZNA as QF307 left Sydney 69 minutes late at 9:44.
Qantas Flight status shows a slight catch up with the onward leg projected to depart Auckland 55 minutes late at 16:35, and and arrive at Pistorini with same delay.
The onward leg eventually left 65 minutes late, arriving 62 minutes late.

The return positioning flight QF6008 left EZE at 16:35 yesterday (Monday) 40 minutes late - estimated to arrive in Sydney at 20:13 this evening 38 minutes late.

Then a shortish turn around to take the delayed QF11 to LAX at 22:15 according to Qantas Flight Status - I can't see where this has been cancelled ?

It was showing on the SYD airport site as 'cancelled' but has been reinstated, and as you suggest, is rescheduled to depart at 2215 tonight. Thanks.

QF5 arrived FCO later than predicted, at 0943 hours this morning (58 minutes tardy).
 
When is a cancellation not a cancellation ? Yesterday's QF75/QF76 Sydney - Vancouver rotation was shown on Qantas Flight Status yesterday as Cancelled. Today it doesn't show at all for the 5th, and instead today we have Qantas B789 VH-ZNH operating QF75, departing two minutes early this evening. Or is that 1438 minutes late ?
