Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Re: General Qantas Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

The suggested delay to QF81 occurred, with it departing SYD 63 minutes late this morning, but forecast to pick up 23 of those minutes en route.

QF11 this morning departed SYD 70 minutes late at 1100 with expected arrival in LAX 65 minutes late. Although earlier flights around 0700 were OK, there were many mid morning delays in SYD this morning perhaps due to the runway mode of operation.

The B744 operating QF18 from JFK to LAX departed two hours and 41 minutes late so is not arriving in LAX until 0010 on Thursday 23 July, two and a half hours late. This late tag leg will delay QF18 to an 0250 Thursday in lieu of 2355 Wednesday LAX departure with arrival in SYD forecast two hours late at 0940 tomorrow morning. QF16 to BNE and QF94 to MEL are not showing as 'delayed' so it looks like any connecting passengers from JFK on QF18 might end up travelling on domestic flights from SYD to BNE, MEL or other airports.

One individual who recently travelled between LAX and JFK on QF said to me that in one direction the flight was at best half full and in the other between a third and half full. Light loadings indeed.

If they hadn't canned the AKL-LAX, they'd still be running an A330 on the LAX-JFK tag.

Re: General Qantas Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

Although this afternoon (Thursday 23 July's) QF5 from SYD to SIN is running 15 minutes early, the return QF6 (timetabled ex SIN at 2350) has been delayed until 0615 tomorrow morning (Friday 24 July) with arrival in SYD expected at 1610 instead of 0945. The QF website is not yet showing that any international flights on Friday from SYD are delayed due to this late arrival, so perhaps QF will substitute one of the internationally configured A332s for one flight if there is no spare A333 in SYD.

An 0615 departure means a very early start from any hotel that QF puts delayed passengers up in, especially since some may arrive at SIN at 2100 or so tonight unaware that the flight was to be delayed. Hard for AFF contributors to believe, but not every passenger has a smartphone or other device with them to receive a message from QF. Passengers then have to be transported to an hotel assuming that they are not left to their own devices. At least Changi has some recliner chairs and is carpeted! It's not the world's best airport for no reason.

Has a key crew member come down with an illness?

QF5/6 is already being operated today by an A332 so it will either turnaround and operate tomorrow's QF5/6 or go on to operate QF3/4 to HNL, which are both due to be operated by an A332.

One individual who recently travelled between LAX and JFK on QF said to me that in one direction the flight was at best half full and in the other between a third and half full. Light loadings indeed.

But which cabin was that in? Load factor doesn't necessarily mean a route is profitable. You mention MNL has high load factors, yet the fact QF don't operate daily would indicate the yield isn't as high as other Asian ports. QF mention JFK is in their top 10 corporate ports so would be an important strategic route.

The 744 is probably too big for JFK, but until the 789s arrive QF have little choice. Remember this aircraft would otherwise be on the ground at LAX all day.

And for reference, my LAX-JFK a fortnight ago had a full Y+ cabin and Y was about 80% full. I imagine corporate contracts and prestige keep JFK on the map and BNE-LAX-JFK (along with SFO) must be close to the top of the list for 789 launch routes

Re: General Qantas Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

Don't forget cargo. An A330 is quite limited compared to a 744, and it can make or break a route, no matter what the cabin loading.

Re: General Qantas Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

With the fog in CBR referred to above, a substantial number of aircraft (not just QF) are holding 'above' it.

QF706 from ADL, QF804 from MEL and QF1511 from SYD are among the affected flights. While some did not depart from their points of origin until well after scheduled departure time, they are still wasting fuel while in these holding patterns. The QF website indicates that some may be able to land soon, although that may be optimistic.

QF814 from MEL is about to join the fray.

Outbound, QF1510 from CBR to SYD (B717 VH-YQU) is still on the tarmac at CBR so this is one day (fairly rare) when a flight scheduled for that time was unable to depart CBR. Usually it seems to be the ones timetabled to leave after 0700 or 0730 that are 'caught.'

QF1463 was however able to land in CBR at 0833 from SYD: it had pushed back in SYD a minute after QF1511.

QF6135 may be a positioning run and is being operated by B737 VH-XZN. It remains in a holding pattern 'above' CBR, having taken off from MEL at 0812.

RAAF BBJ is taxiing at 0953.

While not a delay or cancellation, QF6005 (B744 VH-OJU) is on its way from SYD to MEL, presumably transferring to run the LAX flight QF95 at 1700 late this afternoon (Friday 24 July 2015.)

QF1510 from CBR to SYD took off at 0942 so that is a good sign, but QF1511 from SYD to CBR is returning to SYD and expected to land at 1030 (B717 VH-YQW) so the passengers would have been better off going by train, coach or driving, such as luck would have it.

Once it reaches SYD, QF1511 is forecast to again depart for a second try at 1045 with a predicted 1140 arrival in the national capital.

With (for CBR) a large number of flights trying to land, the next problem may be that the airport runs out of gates. Or is there sufficient room on the apron plus sufficient numbers of stairs to make this a solvable problem?

Re: General Qantas Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

QF6135 has just landed in CBR.

QF735, the 0700 from SYD to ADL (B737 VH-XZB) took off at 0830 but instead of going to ADL was in a holding pattern around CBR and landed at the latter at 1030. Does anyone know why: perhaps it had some CBR bound passengers on board?

QF678, due to depart at 0950 from ADL to MEL has been cancelled, probably due to the problem with QF735.

There are 10 gates (4-13) with air bridges and 2 gates (3 and 14) which board from stairs on the apron. Gate 14 has 4 turboprop sized stands, not sure about Gate 3. (These might fit 737/A320 size, but I've never seen anything other then Dash-8's there).

Re: General Qantas Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

QF795, the 0615 from CBR to MEL is expected to finally depart CBR at 1110, followed closely by QF811, the 0905, at a 135 minute late 1120, with QF1529 from CBR to MEL, the 0840 hours flight having been cancelled.

It was routed via CBR to pick up pax off the cancelled first flight to ADL. 5 diversions for OF last night.. PAX ex ADL/PER sent to SYD and along with SYD pax were offered hotel or a bus. some took the bus.. Full loads to MEL today for soccer tonight.. Last nights BNE flight returned to BNE as did the VA one.. they had 4 diversions last night and 4 this morning. QF6135 was a positioning flight to clear backlog

Re: General Qantas Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

QF5 departed SYD this afternoon (Fri 24 July 2015) at 1721, 76 minutes late and is forecast to pick up a whole one minute to SIN where it should arrive at 2345. QF6 returning is anticipated to be delayed from 2350 hours to 0050 on Saturday morning but should gain on the schedule and be only 40 minutes late into SYD at 1025 on Saturday 25 July. at this stage it is forming the altered Saturday QF5 that departs SYD at 1325 and makes an 85 minute stop in CGK prior to SIN arrival at 2230. The extra CGK stop is due to the Muslim festival of Ramadan having ended, I gather.

Because of this would QF5 still have pork on the menu?

Re: General Qantas Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

QF463 delayed 2.5 hours due to late arrival of aircraft.
I was lucky enough to be on it!!

Re: General Qantas Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

QF63 from SYD to JNB did not take off today until 1106 (it's an 0950 timetabled departure) so it won't be arriving at JNB until about 1700, 50 minutes late. This has been happening a bit in the last few days, but it does not necessarily mean that QF64 will be overly late back into SYD on Tuesday 28 July.
