Qantas Delays/Cancellations

@Melburnian1 you missed a special Qantas flight cancellation...

Another I missed yesterday - a huge delay not a cancellation - was QF9 from PER to LHR on Friday 20 September, the 1830 hours that is now to depart on Saturday 12 at 2140 hours, 1630 minutes late. The aircraft, B789 VH-ZNI has been in Perth since arriving yesterday at 0937 hours, 42 minutes late as QF34 from Paris' CDG.

QFi is suggesting the overnight delayed QF9 will arrive LHR at 0810 on Sunday 22 September, 1625 minutes late.

The Saturday 21 QF10 from LHR back down to PER is normally the 1155 hours departure. This is showing as an '0900 hours' pushback from London Heathrow on Sunday 22 but if the aircraft is only arriving at 0810, that's overly optimistic. PER arrival for 'the 10' is quoted as 0850 hours on Monday 23 September, 1250 minutes late.

With B789 VH-ZNC remaining out of service in Perth, this significant delay to QF9 may adversely affect one or two other flights, but so far AFAIK nothing more is displaying.

BITRE data for August was published yesterday.

Cancellation rates (all services):
  • Qantas - 3.3%
  • Jetstar - 1.7%
  • Virgin - 1.3%
Cancellation rates (by operating entity):
  • Qantas (mainline) - 4.0%
  • QantasLink - 2.8%
  • Virgin - 1.3%
  • VARA - 1.3%

Notably, cancellation rates were high on the MEL-SYD-MEL route. It's high frequency but a 'no go' means an unexpected delay for passeengers.

Timekeeping was again atrocious on routes like MEL-SYD.

Still on Saturday 21 September 2024, B789 VH-ZNK is on the final sector of QF6, from PER to SYD. This 1105 hours scheduled departure was not pointing skywards until 1221, so arrival as evening begins will be at 1800 hours, 50 minutes behind schedule.

QF1 returned due to medical issue with pax on board. Just touched down now

Because A388 VH-OQJ had only taken off at 1524, it only travelled as far as just south of Bathurst NSW before turning back. Thank you Stanley Lambchop (great name). Let's hope and pray that if the ill passenger is still with us, he or she is (eventually) OK.

Going to be disembarked. Need to re cater as some meals were already in ovens and no longer edible also need to perform checks due to landing with heavy fuel load. Delay could be a further 2-3 hours at a guess.

QFi's flight status shows an amended departure at 1715 - 22 minutes ago - that's obviously incorrect.

Goodness - a big ask to 're cater' quickly, but presumably tomorrow's identical meals are already in the flight kitchen chillers.

Would you believe I'd asked @jb747 if fuel would have had to be dumped so thank you for the information re that. Interesting.

Always great when we have a man (or woman) 'on the spot' to provide accurate commentary!

The delayed QF1 on Saturday 21 September departed SYD at 1954 hours, 309 minutes late, for SIN.

It was airborne at 2012 hours with A388 VH-OQJ having the honour. Estimated SIN at gate arrival becomes 0155 hours on Sunday 22, 275 minutes behind schedule.

You'd hope no adult on board was complaining about this unavoidable delay. The remote possibility of a medical incident is another reason why these days (unlike 20 years ago) to be super cautious with connections, especially if sectors are on different PNRs and feature unrelated airlines.
