Qantas Delays/Cancellations

I was supposed to be on QF37 today MEL-SIN, the second daily flight between the two airports. It's been cancelled today, about 7 hrs out from departure.

Saturday: QF37 cancelled
Sunday: only ever had QF35 scheduled
Monday: QF35 cancelled
Tuesday: QF37 cancelled

Hmmm ... bad luck or bad management?
Many of us think we know the answer to that...

As has been well documented, they have too few aircraft for the flying schedule, much of the fleet is elderly, there's a lack of engineering manpower in Australia and there's also the sticky rumour that they drew down their spare parts inventory too aggressively during covid to make the financials look better.

Anecdotally, international seems to be getting worse, not better.

Since COVID, I've actually only booked 4 QF flights. Have had a 75 % cancellation rate! First was QF 35, Apr 2022, cancelled a few weeks in advance, but thanks to ExpertFlyer and seeing flight was zeroed out, I had already rebooked on SQ, SYD-SIN with a QF award flight from MEL-SYD, which in turn was cancelled and I was rebooked 30 mins later, turned out OK. Then today. The only one that went ahead was part of an award ticket 3K-QF-JQ, SIN-DPS-SYD-MEL.

My partner has fared better out of 3 bookings, only 2 were cancelled.

Over the same period I've taken about 20 SQ flights, none cancelled and only 1 that was late - by about 45 mins.

Me and QF just don't get along.

I think your experience probably isn’t that different to many of us! If I were to hazard a guess, fewer than 10% of my QF flights in the last two years have been on time but I’ve been luckier with cancellations than you.

As someone who also spends a lot of time on SQ, the delta in the operational competence between the two airlines has never been more stark. Unfortunately, that’s now very much reflected in SQ’s pricing out of Australia.

QF 92 NOU to SYD is about 90 mins late due to aircraft late leaving SYD.
I did some numbers this morning and we have done 29 flights on QF in Y, Y+ and J since the end of covid to USA, Europe, SE Asia and Pacific, and this is only the second delay we have had in all that time.
The previous one was 30 mins late leaving Mount Gambier!
So it's not all doom and gloom out there, but I know others mileage may vary.
EDIT.
So the flight arrived late after a late departure, but according to the crew, what a flight!
Somewhere into the flight a passenger was taken gravely ill and a call was put out for a doctor on board. About 20 doctors showed up including an intensive care nurse and french paramedic returning home.
Between all the medical attention, and help from passengers the passenger was stabilised and the capt decided to continue to Nou.
The aircraft was met by 2 fire trucks and 2 ambulances and a paramedic who got the patient into a litter and carried down the stairs next to the airbridge and into the waiting ambulance, which was escorted off by 2 escort vehicle to hospital.
That obviously entailed additional delays before leaving.
Once we got on board, we had a flight nurse and patient in row 1 and another very frail lady in row 2 - both needed wheelchairs to get on/off.
We go to Sydney and as we got off I said hi to the guy over the isle from us in row 3 and he looked very pale.
It was his first ever flight on a plane, and he had left a cruise ship in noumea to fly home to his brother who had died of a heart attack!!!!
We made our ADL connection with 5 mins to spare and I'd have to say it was bloody good to get home in 1 piece!!!!!!!

Anyone have any idea what the incoming plane is for the QF36 from SIN to MEL ? I see the QF35 MEL to SIN is delayed and fear this may impact the QF36?

Still no notification of any delay so maybe they have another aircraft. Fingers crossed
According to FR24, EBB, which is arriving in 1/2 hour as QF83 from SYD, will be operating QF36 tonight, so looks like you will be right.

Edit: as a result of QF32's arrival into SIN 4h20m late, and a 2 hour turnaround, QF82 SIN-SYD departed 3h20m late last night and arrived in SYD about the same.

Cheers skip

QF1 on 15 Nov departed SYD for SIN at 2230, 6h10 late. Anyone know the reason for the delay?

Friday 17/11 QF15 cancelled - EBR operated QF126 from AKL-BNE and would be expected to then operate the 15 to LAX as is usual, however flight cancelled, with EBR appearing to then position to SYD to operate QF43 to Denpasar some 4.5 hours late, departing at 22.49

Today's QF37 cancelled, pax rebooked onto QF35 which has been delayed by 5 hours (essentially making it leave and arrive at the same time as 37 would've).

Makes you wonder if it was less work to move the QF37 pax as opposed to the QF35 which was the actual problem but was kept alive and depart at the QF37 time. How far out was the 5hr delay known?

I think the delay & cancellation both happened around the same time, at midnight. I agree it seems like it'd make more sense to cancel QF35 instead.
