Qantas doesn't care about priority boarding

It may have been mentioned before but I was surprised at Melbourne today to see the gate priority boarding signage in the domestic terminal.

It’s got business, platinum and gold followed by the normal oneworld priority logo but had emerald, sapphire and ruby on it.

Last time I checked QF hasn’t started offering oneworld ruby (and I guess QF silver) priority boarding so this seems to be a mistake?

Yes - that's just the standard oneworld priority logo, and no doubt adds to the confusion for some. For Ruby, it's only access to Business Class / priority check-in, and nothing about boarding. I do seem to recall QF calling out for Silver / OW Ruby at boarding on an international flght, a while ago... maybe a light load of status pax, or maybe also confused by the fuchsia oval in front of them on that sign! :D

It doesn’t make sense when almost every other oneworld airline uses just the logo with emerald and sapphire (except those who actually offer ruby boarding).

Even QF lounges have just the emerald and sapphire colours which is why it’s extra confusing.

Agreed - though even on the oneworld website they use the same logo for each of the benefits sections; for example:

QF148 AKL SYD. Priority boarding happened. Just squeaked in after lounge announcement. Flight full and only 20 mins late departure and early arrival. Unusually priority bags came off first at T1.

3 flights this week:

Sydney: Excellent execution. Is it my imagination or are the signs slightly bigger than before?

Brisbane: Excellent again. BNE staff aren’t scared to turn away GB invaders which is good because the terminal design can be tricky to queue

Melbourne: Again, great, though was the red eye AM flight and the ground team joked it was all business people anyway.

As a side note, I wonder if Qantas will bring back the 530 am MEL-SYD departure (or was it 545 - that was a great flight for me!). The 6am is always very full.

O/T but pre-covid I was a regular on QF 6am SYD-MEL every 3-5 weeks for a couple of years and i never recall a 5:30am given that would break curfew.

QF402 used to be a 330, hopefully QF will bring them back online for the first departure.

There is QF400 departing Melbourne at 5:25am that operates from June 16th, not daily.

Thank you Harrison!

Fantastic news this has been re-introduced.

From memory it was only M-F pre-covid for early morning business travellers like me :) A lot of people used it for international connections too I noticed.

Some innovation on boarding is needed, especially with larger a321s on the way.
Do any new narrowbodies have enough bin space for people to be able to load a standard roller carry-on case sideways instead of flat? I image that would allow an additional bag per bin (an extra 3-4 dozen bags across an entire 737-sized cabin?). That would save a bit of faffing about.

That said, I don't think you'll ever get rid of the types who reach their seat and then realise they need to pull out headphones, pillows, a book, etc, while standing in the aisle with 130 people behind them when they had all the time in the world to prepare at the gate.

It's like the people who wait in line at a check-out for a few minutes, and then don't have payment ready when it's their turn and it's literally the reason they're there...

Yes, e.g. the Airbus Airspace Cabin on the a320neo

My goodness, it's a dream come true.

... And now wait for everyone to store them flat - longways no less, and fights break out as people try to move them.

Normality, sadly, resumes.
If they sign it properly, and train the staff, then hopefully it will gradually change over to the new method.
