Qantas domestic economy meals

Nephew flew home on the red eye to Sydney from Perth on QF.

Clearly cheaper to operate only one lounge for the limited late night departures.
But it also explains the reason why the pizza oven's are turned off.
The hot meal distributed were the rolls.

Have been directed from QP to J lounge in BNE on a few occasions last year @cosi

Hope the sausage rolls were tasty!

if they are letting in the "plebs" from the QC that they shouldn'thave pizza?

A friend of mine did fly a redeye out of PER last week and said they did serve Puzza until around 11 iirc.

I did see some chatter here about the PER pizza cut-off time

My take is that they are pretty generous - they tend to flood the serving area when it first starts, as people rush it, then keep up with demand across the day - which is pretty much proportional to the number of departing flights. The last "wave" of feeders - and I'm guilty of this - arrive around 10pm to allow time to pre-load, but consumption slows down dramatcially after 10:30pm.

With the last flights pushing back around midnight, boarding calls are normally around 11:30pm, so an 11pm cut-off for new pizza makes sense. There's always been plenty of uneaten crust pieces lying around at 11pm when I've been in there 😆

Slop In a Box(tm) - decanted direct from the SYD Dom J lounge Slop(tm).

I've been trying to find an image of how I picture many of those meals get prepared.

Boxes carried along belt. Come under spout 1 - stew or curry etc mix poured in. Continue to under spout 2 - rice tipped in, if necessary; Continue to under spout 3 - mix of veges tipped/poured in.

Also, the sausage rolls are very small aren't they? Larger ratio of pastry to filling.

Not an uncommon occurance.

Not sure what the connection to pizza oven service ending you are drawing is?
Have found pizza service to be mostly available pretty much right up before the final QF flights of the day in my experience. Have had so much of it that I almost never ever eat pizza outside of flying now. 😂

Running one lounge makes sense if there's little to no demand. On the weekends Qantas Canberra consolidates and only opens the J lounge to all the usual suspects after the busy Saturday morning patch.
The whole rationalisation of lounge ops has been a thing at PER for years now, especially common from Friday arvo’s/weekends. Sometimes I feel there‘s more staff than pax!

A far cry from a Qantas ad (Youtube video) ages ago showing someone in a white coat carefully mixing a fresh, superfood salad (or appeared to be), then packing it into a neat box.

A bit of obeservational theorycraft a while ago hypothesised that the 3 rolls combined were probably larger than a sausage roll you could get at a servo or most bakeries.

I guess also depends if you like the end bits of the sausage roll (cf. the middle).

This was stir fried noodles with beef. Was actually quite tasty. Noodles were Hokkien and I doubt anything was stir fried.

Kind of reminds me of zha jiang mian.

The sauce may have been done in a wok to give the mince a bit of a crispy-ish edge compared to just plain boiling would, but who's to know...
