Qantas domestic economy meals

BNE-SYD 1910 departure. No vego options in the meals cart. Was offered chicken pie or another meat option. Asked if there was a vego option. FA said there might be some in the back.

Went and brought me plant based corn fritters.

Was good, but felt a bit bitter with the Ginger Beer.
Those corn fritters were the only option on my CBR-BNE flight on Wednesday evening…. Would have preferred a non vego option but was absolutely no choice on my flight.

And, yes, bring back the meal boxes and choice of pre-Covid.

Im presuming all this is eating with hands
While it is normal and proper in some cultures
I can just imagine greasy hands just being wiped on the seats.....
All 3 options yesterday were "eating with hands type" snack. As always, I asked for cutlery and was given a *look* (understandably and which I'm now used to lol) and told that no cutlery loaded as the offering was a snack and not a meal ...

Yuck, but very possible and true !!

I'm not vego but I would happily eat that.

In these cases I would ask for extra serviettes to use to hold the food. I'm not particularly germophobic but public transport is just filthy and I am loathe to use my bare hands to eat.

A lot of the newer meal (OK, let's be honest - snack) options are designed to be eaten with your hands. But the crew usually have cutlery available on request.

They once had fish and chips - boxed like above . No cutlery. Just hands. Fairer and simpler

Now what if passengers brought their own wooden disposable cutlery?. Would that pass the security screen?

It was so silly that I looked up the rules.

It was that any knife was not allowed.

And that's how security handled it. A bit of plastic was still a knife.

But at the time, metal cutlery was allowed both air-side and on board.
Yes, but you see just like the bottled drinks that can be purchased either in the general departures hall or airside, all items that are airside - despite being otherwise identical to their non-airside siblings - have magical properties that prevent them from being used in nefarious ways. Who knows what mischief you could get up to with a wooden knife? But I dare you to try to get up to similar shenanigans* with a metal knife that has been procured airside. It’s a physical impossibility! 😜

*Note: Shennanigans may - or may not - result in severe fines and jail terms.

Airside all the liquids are sealed and are not prone to getting other types of liquid into those bottles.
Landside, the bottles can be emptied and then filled with anything.
That's the logic behind it.

Noting this is for international flights only.

And they still get the x-ray treatment (have been caught behind a delivery before where box after box was going through).

That and the person bringing them through has accreditation.

Thanks, I understand that and appreciate the rationale. My tongue-in-cheek sarcasm probably didn’t come through as intended in my post.

SYD-LST 10am flight only offering were white chocolate cookies, only managed one bite they were so sickly sweet, pity therre wasnt a savory option even potato chips would have been better. I was glad I had some breaky in the J Lounge.

LST-SYD 12:40pm departure only offering was 3 tiny vegetable samosa, they were reasonably tasty. Because the flight wasnt full they came back through and offered seconds to anyone who wanted; which most people took because the first box wasnt exacly filling and the QPub at LST had no savoury options except a packet of pretzels, only these small slice thingies (lemon or chocolate) - the same ones that Accor give away at their lower end hotels.

There was also a selection of Lindo balls offered I took the 70% dark chocolate one.

SYD - LST is quite a long route, they are probably using "not put on board"/not loaded, as a means to reduce costs.
Not so bad if it was via MEL, but for direct, what they offered is really, miniscule, foodwise.

Sounds like LST is going out of its way to “out-HBA“ HBA 😜
Yep people complaining about HBA have obviously never been to the QPub at LST - its is pre security (a pain), about 1/3 the size of HBA, no sandwhich press (or ingredients to make a sandwich). MOst people were walking taking can/bottle of drink formt he fridge and then leaving to to find a seat and accoffee in the terminal.

BNE-DRW return had fairly substantial hot meals in both directions (late evening/lunch respectively). Not going to win any awards but was certainly edible and filling enough.

Lindt Lindor ball for desert - first time I've seen a selection on QF, normally they just have the original reds ones but we had a choice of four.

Was actually surprised by the BNE J lounge this time - hot dish was advertised as vegetarian tofu noodles which I initially passed on - until I saw later it was chock full of beef. Turns out it was beef & black bean, and unusual for this lounge, it was very much loaded up with beef.

I popped in on arrival on my return and the dish (can't remember what) was also very meat heavy. Hopefully we've turned a corner here with the BNE J lounge.

I loved fish and chips in the 70's. Eat with your hands. I'm not a knife/fork person. It looks ugly watching people eat with a knife.

And for what it's worth I usually carry the airline fork/spoon in the original packaging in my jackets inside pocket. Use as needed and clean and put back in pocket.

Marginally better than the little ginger cake on flight from Sydney to Alice Springs that is 3 hours, departed about 9.30am Saturday.
I missed filling up the tank of a hired car at ASP, so had to nip back into town for fuel at the last minute. Arrived at the airport just as the first boarding call was made, and slipped through to make up a decent sandwhich in the QFF lounge. Lounge staff looked at me quizzically, stating that boarding had now commenced.

Took out my QF Sanga after take-off once we'd levelled out and thank God because there wasn't much else to eat on board that day!

Have to admit, those zuchinni and corn frittas aren't bad but yes, some cutlery wouldn't go amiss there especially when hot.
