Qantas Business Class meals & menus

MCY-SYD this morning. Polenta and corn fritters with chicken sausage, or some other bland sausage and frittata. GB available.

This is not just reminiscent of an Ansett economy class breakfast from the 1990s. I was served the same thing, minus the hash brown, in Qantas economy last month flying MEL-CHC! I did not think it was particularly good, although yours does look a bit more appetising than what I was served.

Ugh, that awful plastic tray is exactly what my disgusting SYD-WEL economy pasta came in last month too. Not sure who their caterer is at the moment but bring back the hot boxed meals - tasted much better.

Also tend to agree that the current business catering generally reflects what should constitute a good economy meal, just plated. The business food is generally tasty at least which is more than can be said for economy.

18:40 departure

Short flight so only one meal option available - kung pao chicken with cashew nuts and fried rice.

I love kung pao chicken so I was actually excited when the flight attendant told me what was on the menu - something that hasn’t happened for me on QF for a while. This one wasn’t quite authentic but I still enjoyed it.

I only counted three Cashews on mine as well..............

QF24 BKK-SYD 8TH OCT

I had partaken of food and champagne at both the Emirates lounge and Qatar lounge, so was not really that hungry, but had a go anyway, just opted out of alcohol.

PDB: Sparkling water, (Duval-Leroy Champagne available)

Starter: Cold Duck Salad (over dressed unfortunately, would have been nice otherwise)

Main: Massaman Curry, a fairly mild flavour and the meat was tender.

Dessert: Cheese plate, pretty standard.

Digestive: Irish cream

Breakfast: yogurt, pastry, mango and banana smoothie, tart, tea, everything was fine, smoothie was pretty good.

Does anyone else find that the David Caon bowls (dishes?) that QF use in J don't sit flat on the tray? I'm yet to have one that doesn't seem to spin whenever I try to eat from it.

Yesterday's QF26 Haneda - Sydney

I had the Grilled Duck with soba noodles, and it was really quite good. Much better than the Japanese meal on QF25 out of Sydney. I would usually take the Japanese option (although this is Japanese too) but didn't want to risk it with another Qantas "Japanese Meal".

Also I must say I think I prefer the JAL First Lounge in Haneda over QF First Sydney.

I usually try to take the local option based on the port where the flight was catered. So, I'd take the Australian option out of Australia (generally) and the Japanese option ex HND :)

SYD-AKL lunchtime flight on 737:

Once again I’ve been a victim of the Qantas downgrade game (who hasn’t!)- on booking this flight, it was meant to be a 787 (yea, right), then a A330 and finally, just a few weeks out, it turned into a coughpy 737. So Qantas had lost me pretty much before I even set foot on the plane.

However. The annoying aircraft swap (and downgrade of meals to a genuinely Domestic experience) aside, the rest of the experience was actually quite pleasant. The lovely Jeet Conneeect crew tried their very best to make the flight as pleasant as they could, including pre departure champagne, hanging up jackets and so on. Several people declined the meal service altogether and the crew could not stop offering sweets, nuts and drinks to those. Actually to everyone- my glass was never empty and when I asked for more champagne after the meal, they gladly opened a brand new bottle just for me.

Food is now essentially Domestic- it was never Qantas’ finest, especially compared to Air NZ where you get a full multi-course international meal but it now got worse: Gone are the paper menus and Neil Perry’s infamous three-leaved salad. Not that I particularly miss the latter but it just felt better with the international service. Now it’s the typical Donestic food (and by typical I mean seen it many times before- chicken in creamy white herb sauce, anyone?), just with an additional hot choice. So on offer was the well known chicken, the usual chickpea and something salad and, a new one for me, some pork with rice. Regardless of the rice, the pork reminded me of Germany (it had just the right amount of fat for flavour) and the sauce tasted more like a brown gravy than soy or similar. No idea why it was served with 2/3 of rice but that’s probably cheap I would guess. Desert was a little cheese cake which I also found nice enough- at least not chocolate which I am no fan of (I know, I know…). Wines were two whites and one red- I chose a rather unusual Greek grape variety that was grown in the Barossa (I have no idea what it was called- something very Greek sounding) and appreciated something a bit different from the usual Sav Plonc.

All in all, a fine flight but it was the crew that really made it. On a short hip within Australia I don’t mind the 737s much but at around 3 hours, it starts being annoying on the trans-Tasman if you have to ask your seat stranger to stand up just to get to the lavatory.

@JohnM - on QF161 right now.

Some “friends” of the cabin crew in Y row 4, getting pre-departure drinks and food and a lot of attention.

No, no - surely it’s ‘VIPs’, not ‘friends’. 🙄😡

We’re now in the CNS QP waiting to go CNS-xSYD-PER.

I’m filled with trepidation as to the service and swill we’ll get…😖

Tell you what, though, any of those ‘VIPs down the back’ lies, to the exclusion of or preferentially over J pax, I’ll hit the roof. 🤬

AKL-SYD evening flight on A330-300:

What a difference the type of aircraft can make! My return was on the A330 and felt so much more "international" as a result of that (besides the seat being so much more comfortable, of course). Once again, the crew was excellent like on the outbound and tried their very best to make everyone feel comfortable. Pre departure drinks, including champagne, was offered and shortly after takeoff the meal service began. There was a choice of cottage pie which sounded nice enough and a pasta dish with pork ragout. My German heritage comes through each time I hear "pork" so I couldn't resist and ended up having pork on both legs. I wonder what Qantas' Emirati friends think of that? 😅 Unfortunately, Qantas could not resist to top off the otherwise perfectly tasty pasta meal with their infamous green fizzles- it used to be Kale but I think their latest obsession is spinach. Bah. Other than that, a perfectly fine pasta meal in red sauce which I paired with some Cabernet Shiraz blend. They had a choice of two reds and three different whites on this flight which is very unusual.

IMG_0995.JPG

While the red was tasty with the meal, I changed back to champagne again after the meal which was not a problem. Plenty of top ups provided for the rest of the flight with an exception of half hour of turbulence when everyone needed to be seated- so much about "true international experience" 😛

Good flight again, all in all. Wish the full three course international type meals were back on the Tasman but short of that, no complaints. Crew again excellent from start to finish.

Would it be too much to ask for the tea to be hot though?
Agree. Once I ordered a black coffee and it was served hot. However, anytime I asked my tea/coffee with milk in it, the temperature is lukewarm ... may be the milk is too cold when added and it brings down the overall temperature?

I gave the sky sprits ok and thought it was decent enough.
I liked it too. I had the spritz SYD-SIN in QF81 Y and I was given a cold can and an empty plastic glass. It was good, I liked it and went for seconds. It was much better than the Angove Organic Shiraz (or the small bottle ones, can't remember the name) they were pouring.

As you were flying J, did they make the spritz fresh or was it from a can?
