Qantas Business Class meals & menus

QF 583 J SYD-PER last week. No pictures but here is the menu.

To Start
Zucchini and parmesan soup
Seared Ocean Trout, charred corn and jalapeno with lime coriander and ginger dressing.

MAIN
Big bowl of Zucchini soup
Salad Nicoise with cold smoked salmon and chardonnay vinaigrette
Chicken tagine with black olives, dates, preserved lemon, pearl couscous and harissa yoghurt
Pork, rosemary and tomato ragu with fettuccini and pecorino

Seasonal cheese with accompaniments

TO FINISH
Whole seasonal fruit
Baked meringue with passionfruit cream and strawberries
Maggie Beer ice cream


I went with the ocean trout as a starter-very nice. Nothing sounded appealing for the main, but I ordered the chicken tagine and it was a very nice surprise. The harissa yoghurt made the dish in my opinion.
Finally I had the baked meringue for dessert. It was okay, but nothing special. The crew were average and mainly chatted in the galley. No wine refills unless call button pushed.
 
The AUS-NZ menus seem to have finally changed over. This was earlier this week, SYD-AKL 7pm flight.

Sadly not much variety from previous iterations.

Amenity kit provided. No pre-meal drink service except on request (which lots of us did).

Small serve. Reasonably tasty. But personally I didn’t think some elements worked (eg olives and mayonnaise).

Asked for a soup sample but ended up getting the whole small bowl. The laksa broth was tasty.

Great piece of meat. Nicely cooked. Very tasty. (Good job I liked it - have had it twice ex-SYD domestically since).

Skipped dessert in favour of a coffee. Was cheese or an ice cream stick.

Really mixed bag in terms of service. From the same three FAs and CSM experienced indifference, ditzy forgetfulness, officious language, then warmth and good humour and in the end pretty good service.
No such luck ex MEL.
Still the ‘old’ menu.
 
Excellent service on QF783 SYD-ADL tonight (12/07). Pre departure drinks of still or sparkling water. Pre dinner drinks were served once in the air, as well as constant requests whether we wanted another throughout the flight and dinner service.

Dinner was the choice of either fish or a lentil & feta salad which I chose. After having stuffed myself in the lounge prior I didn't finish it all, but it tasted okay.

Seems at least the SYD-ADL runs are well looked after. I was on a SYD-CNS flight at 13:05 a couple of days ago. J options were the same. But no pre-lunch drink offered (on a 3 hour flight). Plenty of drinks offered after though. I was in Y but could see everything.

Interestingly the J serving of meals (6 in the cabin) was complete before the Y service commenced.

Y ‘meals’ were a disgrace. Dry pork buns (2) or margarita pizza (more like a focaccia - kids seemed to enjoy, but hardly a meal). Neither cabin received anything before landing (ice creams used to be standard IIRC).

Y pax readily allowed into the J toilet but the CSM did ask people to queue behind row 3. Not sure that’s how it is meant to work...

Can’t complain too much as in row 4 and a P1 I got a couple of drinks from up front from the CSM (after the J service was done which I think is the way to go). Very nice touch and much appreciated.. A CL or P1 in row 4 also got the treatment. One other CL I presume got moved into J when several staff who had been assigned J seats didn’t show (presumably didn’t need to travel).
 
Just as a slightly OT aside... latest QF points email says we can buy Qantas business class wines for an average of just $15 a bottle.

Which probably means they are worth $9 a bottle!
Of my handful of flights this past week the Dandelion Shiraz has been the only red option. I sure wouldn’t pay $15 for that. It’s ok but not something I’d ever purchase and I’m hoping it’s a drive to reduce all Dandelion stock and never to return.
 
QF71 PER-SIN 31MAY19 A332 J International

This was my first flight on any QF group aircraft after a ~18 month hiatus and my first QF PER-SIN flight since QFi abandoned PER in 2013. The flight was part of a larger OW J award itinerary and QF was selected as no other OW airline operated the sector.

I received my 'first choice' meal selections without issue as I had preselected them online. Others in surrounding seats did not and made their displeasure known to all sitting adjacent. The FA even commented that 'I was lucky' that I had preselected when she finally arrived to confirm my order.

It appeared that the starter was not freshly prepared on board. The main was the standard QF meat (or fish in this case) and one veg affair. At least what was served was better than some of the 'food' I have seen posted in this thread.

A limited wine selection compared to other airlines (and no wine list so any plonk could be slopped your way). A sparkling wine was offered as a PDB however.

Service carts blocking the aisle during service and the QF war against toilets (1 for 28 on this aircraft) were QF specific issues that arose that I had forgotten about travelling on other airlines. After service, the FA disappeared for the remainder of the flight but this could happen on any airline. The PER QFi T3 experience is poor for those commencing their journey in PER. I would support a move back to T1 if I had to travel on this service in the future.

A three star effort overall. However, from the comments overheard of a group of four (unrelated?) pax upon disembarkation, I would say they would not have been as charitable.

An evening QF MEL-PER A332 J sector next week (as part of another OW J award) will give a chance to reacquaint myself with the domestic J experience...

Chicken (I think) sausages and mash. 13:40 CNS-SYD flight the other day. Knew what I was likely to get so in that sense not disappointed. Reasonably tasty but a very average J meal again. Other option was a chicken curry. No pic but was told it was quite good.

No drinks round offered but on asking for one it was provided immediately with two pretzel packs. Full cabin but service was good. Regular top-ups etc. Flight was quick (2:25 from memory) so absence of any further snacks wasn't an issue.

That pretty much mirrors my feeling after doing the Per/Sin return flight in February - but both of my seats had some mechanical problems and my wifes' IFE didn't work on one leg.

Promised “breakfast card” didnt eventuate for any pax but when I woke up was offered muesli, egg and bacon roll or fruit.

Passed on brekkie thinking i’d have some in the priority pass arrivals lounge - woops big mistake.
 
SYD-CBR 18:50 flight.

A reasonable chicken salad, with grapefruit and an Asian dressing. Given such a short flight no complaint. CSM did well to serve about 7 of us quickly, with time for top-ups. Being in 1A helped but all seemed to be well looked after.
 
Anyone able to share insights into kids meal options on intl J? Or is it effectively choose from the main menu? Travelling on QF35 next week.
 
My flight QF143 SYD-AKL (A330) is cancelled tomorrow and I've rebooked on QF145 (B737) , both in J. Was looking forward to my first A330 trans-Tasman in business, but no luck.

Is the food significantly different on A330 vs B737 for trans-Tasman J? I can imagine the B737 galley imposes some limitations.
 
QF653 MEL-PER 01AUG19 A332 J Transcon

First QF domestic flight since late 2017. An award flight as part of a larger OW J itinerary.

I have had far worse QF J menus over the years but it was still poor when compared to the VA offering. Being MEL-PER, QF 'do not have the time' to do a full three courses so you get a mini ice cream for dessert. The opposition manages to provide a full three courses on this sector.

It is debatable if a very basic fish burger is suitable for a J flight where the one way fare could be greater than $1900. I have had a bad experience with the QF beef bourguignon previously so decided to steer clear on this occasion. For full disclosure, I did offset the top bun for a better picture of the main.

Only three wines on offer, with the single red being a nondescript blend. As the FA could not list a single grape variety within the blend it must have been a quality drop.

Highlight was getting the little plate of almonds instead of the bag of pretzels and almond that was provided on the QFi flight flown a month or two earlier.

I had the beef out of Melbourne the other day on QF777. Have to agree the standard is poor for the money although the service was good - the red was Leeuwin Estate Prelude Can Sav 2014. The fish burger is embarrassing.

Meal on Wednesday from Sydney to Auckland. Sweet young FA but just not up to scratch. Which red wines have you got - we've got a Pinot and a Shiraz - ok thanks where are they from - no idea I'll go and take a look - back she came - the Pinot is NZ and the Shiraz is Australian - thanks - a bit more info please - oh the Shiraz is from McLaren Vale - arrrgh

The crab itself was fine but the potato around it was cold and a bit odd. The biscuits with the cheese aren't great so I asked for some more sour dough bread. The cheese was just way too cold as well.
