Qantas / Emirates tie up (Partnership inc. Codeshare, Status)

Come to think of it, I hope they finalise their schedules soon. I need to be in ADL and SYD (from SIN) in April, and I might just book with a competitor instead if I can't get at least a good idea of the schedule in the near future.

Personally I find the logo suggestion to be offensive and racist. Especially, as vast sections of Australia were opened up with the use of camels.

Perhaps the most we might be able to accuse pull up! of was ignorance or some form of insensitivity (whether intentional or not; whether jocularly or not).

Although the post has been removed, NoNews, on the other hand, has no such shame of putting on the logo (which might've been the source of the posting here):

I don't understand why it would be considered offensive? Camels are associated with the middle east, the implication is that QF will be subsumed into EK and thus the traditional animal of Australia would be replaced by something that is iconic to teh middle east. The faux Polo Ralph Luaren shirts in the duty free store in JED replaces the Horse with a Camel.

You don't think that they will avoid that date for obvious reasons? Also it is Easter weekend but not Easter school holidays.

O/T It's Easter school hols in Qld (from Fri 29/3 - Fri 12/4 next year). So, depends on your state as to whether it's school hols (and then the intricacies of public vs private, etc, etc). ;)

Quick question:
I'll be flying HKG-LHR on a BA flight number and metal, sold by QF, after April 2013 in discount economy.
What will be my point rate? 0, 0.25, 1?
Thanks :)

But we don't care if it isn't SYD centric ;)

+1. Then again I've learnt a lot about the lack of cultural awareness of other AFF'ers in this single forum. Rather ironic given that most are WP and have traveled the globe.

Having a look at Emirates' destinations in Europe and Qantas' current codeshare destinations, it looks like Emirates doesn't fly to Toulouse, Budapest, Brussels, Berlin, Hanover, Stockholm, Oslo, Shannon and Aberdeen. Is it anticipated that the BA codeshares to these destinations will continue?

I believe EK has a deal with German rail which includes inner-German train trips. Even if not, training it from either Berlin or Hannover to Hamburg- from where EK flies- will be much quicker than taking the long route via coughpy LHR.

Some very pertinent points in that document oz_mark:

-frequent flyer programs;
-all passenger-related aspects to provide a consistent level of service to customers including ground services and lounge access;
-harmonising service and product standards;
-harmonising IT systems;

Some interesting points plucked from the lengthy documents...

1. It is possible that Qantas may continue to codeshare on certain services operated by BA to ports to which Emirates does not operate, however there will not be any price or capacity coordination between Qantas and BA in respect of any routes following the termination of the JSA.

2. BA may codeshare Qantas operated services between Singapore, Bangkok and Hong Kong, and Australian ports

3. Absent the ability to coordinate with one of the mid-point carriers, Qantas International’s current European network will continue to contract, with one of the daily London services possibly being withdrawn in the short term.

4. Nevertheless, to preserve maximum flexibility in a rapidly changing international environment, Qantas and Emirates seek authorisation to implement the Proposed Conduct globally, including potentially to these regions. (refers to the US).

5. QFF members will also be able to earn status credits whilst travelling on Qantas codeshare services on Emirates operated flights (and vice versa). <- no mention of SC's on EK codes.

6. Both QFF and Skywards members will receive reciprocal benefits including (depending on membership tier) access to airport lounges, additional baggage allowances, priority baggage and check-in, preferential seat availability and fast tracked immigration and security processing on Qantas/Emirates operated flights.

7. As a result of the Proposed Conduct, Qantas would adjust its POS Australia fares to certain destinations in Europe (through a process of zonal re-classification). This will mean that in the case of six destinations – Athens, Istanbul, Larnaca, Casablanca, St Petersburg and Tunis – fares could potentially be reduced by up to $330.

8. Emirates would have the ability to sell Qantas’ ‘Walkabout Pass’ which gives access to discounted domestic travel and enables Emirates passengers to book multiple sectors on the same ticket.

9. Preferential booking class arrangements would mean that the cheaper original fare can still be sold notwithstanding that the same booking class is unavailable on the other carrier. Initial modelling by the Applicants indicates that this may result in fare savings on certain routes. In addition, such access would mean that sale fares are able to be offered across broader travel periods.

10. From Emirates’ perspective, it is expected that the Proposed Conduct will facilitate an upgauging of aircraft on services between Perth and Dubai, from a Boeing 777-200LR to a Boeing 777-300ER aircraft.

11. Qantas and Emirates will utilise each other’s facilities, expertise and assets such as customer service/check in desks, airport lounges and ground staff, therefore removing duplication of some of the fixed costs of providing services on particular routes.

12. In addition, cost savings and efficiencies will be delivered from having identical distribution platforms, IT systems and common marketing and sales activities.

And this seems to be carefully repeated through all correspondence, "SC's earned on EK metal with QF codeshare...." which excludes in its silence SC earn in EK metal/number.

Given that they will harmonise pricing why wouldn't you just book the QF codeshare?

It may not be possible to book the codeshare. Just like today one cannot book a Qantas codeshare on BA out of LHR without having made a trip from Australia first.

Sorry for doubling up but I had posted these questions in the wrong thread so here again... For me -and I would imagine many others- the value of this will depend on whether you can earn SCs on ALL EK flights or only on code share flights. And if it's the latter, I wonder which ones will be code shared. Particularly the following I'm not yet clear about:

  1. Can you use EK's services out of Australia that stop over in Asia on the way to Dubai? If yes, then you'd still have the option to stop over in Asia rather than only in Dubai
  2. Are you allowed to fly on EK into LHR or will you have to fly QF to this one destination if you want QF points and SCs?
  3. What about New Zealand- are the trans-tasman EK flights covered through this agreement? What about the pricing if they are- will they adjust their prices on this route to the ones Qantas "offers" :shock:?
  4. What about the US- it seems like no code sharing hereat least. If you can still earn QF SCs on those EK flights (which somehow doesn't look like it so far), might be a nice way to travel to the states in style and to avoid LAX, even though travel time will be longer which is not necessarily a bad thing on an A380 in Emirates J :rolleyes:
  5. And last, the biggest question, can we expect some really good introduction specials at some point? If they come up with a sales far in J, I'll instantly take a week or two off and fly to Europe, something like into Barcelona and out of Hamburg would be nice :cool:
