Or better yet. SYD-DXB-YVR-SYD reinstating the Canada direct services

Sounds nice but I'm putting this in the 'keep dreaming' category. Especially the SYD/YVR leg.

The determination is only for 5 years. That's not a lot of time, plus I wonder if it will be a similar uphill battle to get an approval after that 5 years expires.

I don't quite understand the determination "conditions" on the Trans-Tasman. In a nutshell, does it mean that QF / EK can't decrease the services they have (i.e. measured in number of physical seats) on the Tasman, but can increase them (or maintain them, even if this means codesharing)?

I'm sure there's more to the document, but I thought it was interesting that the draft determination seemed to treat the Trans-Tasman matters as a "linchpin" of the decision (similarly discussed in the No News article).

The Canadian Government believe in open competition so long as its only Air Canada providing it according to a few of my Canadian friends who are road warriors, cannot see any airline really trying to break that down in the current economic climate.

Personally, doing a lot of flying to Germany (previously on QF5/6) I found this to be very interesting:
(e) as a result of support and feeder traffic from Emirates, Qantas may be
able to offer an Australia-Dubai-Berlin service,

Oh please, yes! I'm still dreaming of a direct connection SYD-BER without the need to fly on those extremely coughpy little airplanes that Qatar uses from Doha to TXL. A QF plane in BER? That would be a dream come true for me!

my questions from all is are as follows,

What is happening about trans-tasman flights? and
What is the deal with QP access when flying EK (either on an EK booking / EK metal or both). They keep stating how everything is reciprocal, but they still haven't cleared that little detail up.

Both these are questions I would really like answered sooner rather than later as I'm planning a TT trip on EK for next year (in April). The last thing I want to find is a lounge dragon somewhere stating "well, had you booked on the 21st of Jan, you'd have been allowed access, but since your booking was on the 17th, no lounge for you..."

The date of booking would make no difference to lounge access. It would be based on the policy of the day that you fly.

Now that they have got the green light expect a barrage of info over the next few days, with regard TT I expect no real change, capacity must remain the same, and the lounges will remain the same, you just might be able to enjoy the EK lounge as an alternative should you choose to fly them and still get points etc.

Maybe not the next few days... given I suspect most offices shut up shop tomorrow and I can't imagine too many people working 24th.

They have had plenty of time to prepare, and Xmas New Year is often a peak time for Qantas sale activity.

They will have had all their marketing ready to go and in the can for some time.

My prediction - they will bombard the media on Boxing Day. Can see the fly over at lunchtime at the cricket right now, along with glowing platitudes of Qantas from the various commentators.

i would think that ek wont let you use their lounge for qp whilst a qf lounge is available... for sg/wp is where the full sharing will occur i suspect.

The fact that this is a "draft determination" - does this mean that the decision doesn't mean too much, i.e. the ACCC could make their final determination against the alliance (completely different to the draft determination), impose more restrictions or conditions, etc.?

According to the ACCC boss this morning on ABC he alluded that unless there was a valid reason to object that they hadn't seen then it would be approved

Other gives a good indication on how they are thinking. While it could change it would require a fairly substantive argument.

I guess if it were up to Qantas now, should the directive be, "Approach with Caution", "Steady as she goes" or "Full steam ahead"?

An interesting note I found in one of QF's submissions:

Qantas operated services between Sydney and Bangkok will be re-timed as part of the Asian network
redesign. The Sydney-Bangkok flight which currently arrives in Bangkok at 1935 (for the Northern
Winter 2012) will be retimed to arrive between 1610 and 1630 for Northern Summer 2013 (this is still
subject to final slot negotiation). The Bangkok-Sydney flight currently departs at 2130 (for the
Northern Winter 2012 season) but will be retimed to depart at either 1825 or 1845 (for the Northern
Summer 2013 season (this is still subject to final slot negotiation). The changes to the Bangkok
schedule, currently intended to be announced in early January 2012, will be effective from April 2013.
