Qantas / Emirates tie up (Partnership inc. Codeshare, Status)

That would be the most honest thing to do.

At present if you want W to say HKG the site offers to route you via SYD... presumably similar will happen for BNE to DXB/LHR for W fares if they choose to offer them.

The issue is not with LHR, it is with the rest of Europe where you will be getting on an Emirates plane. You will fly W to Dubai, and then your onward flight on Emirates will be in the Y cabin. This is what is happening with the recent codeshares to Milan:

Qantas codeshare customers who purchase a Premium Economy fare will travel in
Premium Economy on Qantas’ A380 services to/from Dubai and Australia.
Customers who purchase these fares will be accommodated in the Economy cabin
on Emirates operated services from Dubai to Milan and Manchester, as Premium
Economy is not offered

That is going to catch a lot of people out then. Maybe Qamtas won't offer y+ anymore for flights likely to be using Emirates planes. That would be the most honest thing to do.

I don't see that happening - I see more that QF will go ahead selling W on these flights, but of course on your review page you will be told that the onward sector from DXB (or the inbound short sector to DXB) will be in (EK) Y. Kind of same diff with onward domestic connections in Australia / across the Tasman after flying W from long haul, but of course this is not quite the same - it can be relatively "brushed off" - e.g. EK to LCA, ATH, CAI or PRG - or it can be rather disheartening - e.g. EK to MAN, NCL or CDG.

I don't know how VA handle this situation for onward EY connections, even to somewhere like LHR. I wonder what the Y to W differential would be given that only "half" of the journey is in the selected class of travel (i.e. "coincidentally" the longest sector between Australia and the Middle East).

Similarly to QF. In the W cabin SYD-AUH, then Y cabin onward. The difference however is in the fare: VA Y+ fares to Europe at around $2700 (last I looked) acknowledge the mixed fare nature of the trip. QF fares don't tend to. Cheers skip

Hopefully they do better than when booking a JASA MEL-xSYD-LAX and when you hover over the exclamation mark 'SYD-LAX will be in economy class' or the like. A bit sneaky for my liking.

Could EK perhaps introduce a Premium Economy product? Given how coughpy their 777 Y product is, a W product on EK would be great!

Totally agree. A few months ago they wanted to extract PE points from us and none of the sectors was in PE. The warning notice is much more obvious than back then.

Guess there's no PE option for Adelaide then as the A380 doesn't fly here. Emirates will be doing the Adelaide route and there's no way emirates are going to reconfigure their planes.

PE option via MEL? From BNE QF offer PE options via SYD and MEL? Cheers

Yes, we could configure it that way but flying back over Adelaide to get to Dubai kinda sucks. And adds on around 4 extra flying hours. I love Adelaide but just wish Qantas did.

Next year we're flying Adelaide direct to Singapore (love SQ)!daytime flight then picking up emirates business class to Europe. Saved so many thousands doing it this way. And get Emirates limo service from start to finish.

I'm currently watching a re-run of a CNN Business Traveller episode. There was a story on the growth of Chinese carriers that included a very brief interview with Alan Joyce at the 2012 IATA Conference held in Beijing. Joyce said: "The future for us is absolutely Asia".

Isn't Asia in a whole different region than the UAE?

Oh, I should point out, the conference was held in June - prior to the EK announcement.

Not to Joyce-bash but one could be forgiven for thinking Joyce (and probably Qantas more generally) may well have a bit of a reputation for saying a different thing from week to week. It's hard to keep up, really.

When AJ said "The future for us is absolutely Asia", he meant JetStar (and to a lesser extent, Red Herring)

With those credentials he will be well suited for a job at Qatar ;)

Qantas does not have the fleet to make Asia a priority, something SQ and CX to name but two like to point out with huge differences in frequencies, most if not all QF services ex Asia are red eyes as well. Being Brisbane based I can do HKG and back in the day every day with CX, QF dont even have one daily.

The daytime flights from SIN with SQ have turned me away from QF because of their lack of frequency. It is so much easier getting on a plane in the morning and off in the afternoon without having tried to (or needed to) get some sleep.

It would be nice to think that if Asia was a priority then there would be a decent number of flights there, from both ends of Oz.

Over here in Perth there is a car dealer though who uses "Absolutely!" and has he done quite well? Absolutely! By the way he is called John Hughes.

Northern Ireland, excepted! How's that for pedantry ;)
So what date did the devolution occur?

From Nov 1, 2011, the only rates payable for journeys commencing from Northern Ireland were 'Band A' - currently £13 or £26; in the interim between the devolution an a new regime in reation to taxes like as the APD, such was to be administered on behalf of the Northern Ireland Assembly by HM Revenue & Customs.

I've been dipping in and out of this thread trying to work out what the new tie up means (if it eventuates), However at 152 pages, it is a bit too long to read in detail, so forgive me if my questions should already be clear.

I am planning a trip in 2014 - Sydney to Tanzania to South Africa and return. Obviously I want to maximise status credits where possible - we'll be flying F or J where F isn't available. No Dar es Salaam appears in the drop down list for Qantas. So I am thinking we would probably have to do something like Syd - Dubai - Qantas or Qantas codeshare. Dubai - dar es salaam EK metal and probably no codeshare? Dar es salaam to South Africa with South Africa airways. Comair in South africa (booking via BA) and then return.

We would get status credits on the leg to Dubai and on the domestic Comair flights, but otherwise not - is that right?

Would we get points on the flight Dubai to Dar es salaam?

I suppose I could fly to South Africa first and then Tanzania return, but I quite fancy flying F to Dubai and Qantas only does J now to South Africa.

Any comments gratefully received :)
