Qantas extends status extensions until end June 2023 (previously December 2022)

International borders opened November, so July, August, September and October anniversaries should get an extension. From Nov everyone has ability to do a full 12 months of travel to earn their status.

Rather than just 1 flight, happy if they make it 2 or a return flight.
International borders may have been opened, but it's a stretch to suggest travel just snapped back to normal. Even the scheduled flights weren't back to a full complement.

In the end, Qantas are the ones with a picture of how everyone is travelling toward their renewals.
 
I'd also argue that Qantas has only resumed a handful of routes so far (LHR/LAX/NAN/DEL/YVR?) so even though international travel is possible, QFF travellers are restricted to flying with partner airlines to most destinations.

QFF awards roughly half the SC (at best, compared with their own metal) for partner flights to/from Australia, making it far more difficult to retain unless flying to one of the few destinations Qantas services. Being limited to partner airlines also prevents members from earning loyalty bonus SC, and in the case of P1 members, meeting their QF-metal requirement.
 
I think the next lot will be for the July-December folk. Having said that, I also think they will want more than the one flight. But I don't think we will hear anything for a month or two yet.

That's not accurate. Not everyone has had the ability to do a full 12 months of travel to earn their status. Folks in WA for the most part can't travel.

Yup my parents are still trapped in Perth and seething that everyone else is moving on and they are stuck in the past. They love to travel as well it’s been really hard to watch us all zipping around the pace again.

I don't think it's fair to say if you're in WA you're stuck in Perth. There's plenty of domestic travel options you can enjoy in the country of Western Australia like Broome, Broome, Broome, oh and everyone's favourite Broome! Did you know a return trip from Perth to Broome will nab you 30 status credits in discount economy (60 in Flex). If you were to fly once a month to Broome in Flex you could easily qualify for Gold, or if in Discount Economy once every other week. So go out there and start sweeping for status credits Western Australians*.

* subject to Western Australia not being in a lockdown and travel being restricted to your LGA

Indeed, and QF are further paring back intl schedules in Jan / Feb so demand must be soft.

Its in their interest to retain FFs otherwise they will lose them to other carriers.
 
So you could requal WP if you flew J to Broome, Broome, Broome, Broome and Broome.

Per the QF site, each PER <> BME return in J will net you 120 SCs or 140 SCs if you opt for a McGowan J fare 😂
In which case, you're quite right 5 trips to BME will give you a clean sweep for QF Gold. At the same time, I didn't see QF list what the accrual for an F fare on that route would net you. However, I reckon that'll net you 180 SCs on a return trip. Hence, 3 trips to BME in F will just about do it (considering you opt for the 50 bonus SCs for the 500 SC threshold gift). I haven't personally visited PER or BME so I can't comment on the quality of their F Lounge nor the onboard F service 😅

don't take this the wrong way folks but... we've seen this angst before (and for the record I am an August anniversary) and ALWAYS (since this had to be a thing) QF has come to the party in the most generous of ways. Just because they have not announced anything yet in public doesn't mean it won't happen.

The "St Mark" situation is actually a factor in favour for many as frustrating as it has been, along with the relatively late opening of QLD borders (Dec 17).

I am just sitting back and waiting for the reaction in a few weeks/month or whatever time when it's announced.

I mean look back and similar "they won't do it..." threads have been going on since the first extension and they have. And honestly it would be fair to make it a full year's extensions.

but also.. you know what? if it doesn't happen (which I doubt) then.. I'll live. As will everyone.

So try and relax. :) QF will do whatever QF thinks will serve it best and I would put money on July-Dec extension.

I have taken 17 domestic flights this calendar year, on 14 one way journeys. And I renewed WP independently in the process (with the help of the bonus SC from Qantas). So yes, it can be done. Even from Perth. 😆

(As an aside, two trips were one way to and from Broome, another return to Kununurra. Unfortunately there wasn’t really any indirect route such as via DRW, as that would have been out of bounds!)

Isn’t Points Club QF’s way of helping to retain status now with the benefit of carrying over SCs?

Anyway, rather than the bit by bit extensions that have been rolled out, appreciated as they were, I wish QF had just given everyone a 12 months extension, then the second one with the addition of having to take a flight. I think now there will always be someone who feels they have been short changed.

Yeah, for me it looks like aiming to hit PC+ next year to retain access if there aren't any extensions.

I meant all extensions at once, for all 12 months rather than Jan-June, then July-Dec, then repeat piecemeal. And I did say that my renewal was with the help of the SC bonus. No, I don't think anyone on AFF has mentioned renewing status entirely without support. I doubt it would have been possible.

If international travel is open this year, I have a good chance of renewing WP again, but some routes are just not easy with OneWorld alone. Not earning SC with Emirates really made an impact. I love flying Qatar and will continue, but Qantas awards a much lower rate of SC than flying QF metal.

Isn't it lovely to be thinking international travel this year? 😃

Well in the grand AFF tradition of why flying direct when you connect for extra SC’s perhaps the locked up WA people could route a stopover to Broome, via Broome, on the return leg to Broome but instead start the run in Broome? Just mix it up a bit :)

If QF flew the Christmas Island / Cocos Keeling Island routes I would have been tempted.

Qantas is a bit stuck with its program architecture having membership years across all 12 months. So it is affecting people differently. And they have done extensions based on what things looked like at the time.

Programs that work on calendar years, or those like Velocity where that can move your year around, probably have it a bit easier.

Velocity can be a bit of a mess with dates but agree with those that run on calendar years. The recent QR extension was simple because everyone gets extended to 31/12/22, no one complaining they are getting short changed.

Actually there was an article of an AFF here that did earn from pleb to platinum or P1 (I can't be sure). During covid, did 8 or 12 sorry my memory fails me, trips in J, MEL-DRW return, during a break in lockdowns. Story goes he/she had some payout from work & cost ~$10k to gain QF status.

I do remember reading that story. Technically he did have the 600SC booster and “only” needed to earn the remaining 3,000 himself, but it’s close enough. It’s the sort of travel I’d do in the future except now that I have a dog, I can’t just up and go!

I did proffer a while back that the Qantas membership year structure made it more difficult but I now actually think it makes it easier.

Back in March/April 2020, when airlines were first offering full-year extensions, those who had memberships expiring in March/April 2020 had either largely done the hard yards by that point or weren't qualifying. Then everyone got another 12 months. Suppose covid turned out to be a fizzer and only last a couple more months. Suddenly, all those who got an extra 12 months for nothing had less incentive to travel, knowing their status was secured.

Qantas's structure I think actually allows members to be treated more equally. If Qantas wanted to, it could carefully tailor status extensions month-by-month. For example, right now, extensions are through until June so all Qantas really needs to consider next is whether it extends July expiries and then August expiries ... rather than giving everyone another 12 months and risk the albeit unlikely chance that a covid cure or vaccine for 100% prevention is found tomorrow that would be the gateway to travel returning to pre-pandemic levels almost overnight.

Similarly, Qantas could, for example, give July expiries a 50% headstart, August expiries a 40% headstart and so on. That I think is actually far more equitable.
