Qantas FF and Woolworths create new loyalty alliance

Some debit cards have also been Visa enabled, in which case you could press the credit button, rather than the savings or cheque button to debit your account.

In future, at Woolworths, if you wish to use a debit card, you will have to press the cheque or savings button. The credit button presumably wont work.

As I've mentioned earlier, this isn't an ideal solution for a lot of people. Visa Debit cards are attached to a "Savings" account. Very few savings accounts are fee free, and most have limits on the number of transactions per month before additional charges apply. Visa "Debit" transactions are generally considered as free transactions and not subject to the transaction limit. Which is why this is a preferable way to pay for a lot of people.

I really don't like what Woolies is doing. Yeah I have shares in them, so really should be congratulating them for saving some costs - but there are many sections of society who *want* to pay via Visa (or Mastercard) Debit, and Woolies should respect that.

If Woolworths are going to pursue this form of payment discrimination (permitted by the moronic RBA, whom I've railed against previously elsewhere) then I intend to take my business elsewhere and spend some of my time punishing them for it.

So when Coles implements similar changes because Woolies has paved the way ... will you also boycott them? (Not sure if there is an Aldi, or even IGA type stores in your area!).

And in the spirit of the previous post - yes I also own shares in Wesfarmers, so also have a vested interest in them making as much money as possible!

I got the 700 points offer too and I know JohnK only got 600 points!
Yes I got the 600 points offer. So last week went to buy some alcohol from the local Woolworths and guess what? I did not notice until later but the receipt, and confirmed on Everyday Rewards website, is from Woolworths Supermarket. How ridiculous! So now I still have to go and buy something from BWS as well as Big W.

I hate playing their silly games....

Wish the local woolworths in QLD had bottle-o attached, but I understood it to mean the 3 distinct brands.

I still have to buy some coke from Big W.

Aldi surcharge for usage of Visa or Mastercard, so threatening to go there isn't going to gain much (and they don't have a presence in WA)

Heaven forbid the thought if Coles Group went down this road, but yes - I would punish them as well for payment discrimination.

I've always been a strong believer in voting with your feet, I don't see this as being any different.

But by punishing both Coles and Woolies you will end up punishing yourself with the overpriced IGA as your only choice.

I don't see Woolies stopping debit cards as a big change, it is clearing costing them money and a small change can prevent this cost with no real cost to the consumer. I would prefer them to stop taking these cards over increasing prices to recover the cost.

Without trying to be a know-it-all, if you clicked on the 'Find Out More' button, it does clearly display the brands that customers are required to purchase from. I had a sneaking suspicion that Woolworths Liquor would be considered Woolworths.

They do at Redcliffe, its right next door but owing to our odd laws is a completely separate shop, and like all Woolworths group pricing polices dont expect to save money on incidentals, their coke is dearer than the supermarket, just like the chicken is normally cheaper in the deli than prepacked at the meat department. Dont forget our bottle shops are associated by licence to the hotel, with each hotel allowed a certain number nearby, one of the reasons Coles and Woolworths now own most of the QLD pubs. My local pub is being trimmed in size to morph into a Dan Murphys!

And you are probably right.

I was under the impression that there was no such thing as Woolworths Liquor.

They're the old Macs liquors amongst others. They just rebranded all the small outlets to that as far as I know, sometime around the same time they created BWS.

I don't even know where my nearest BWS is; all their outlets near me are the small WW liquors (one of a number of reasons that I ignored that buy from 3 outlets promotion - I'm not going to run all over the place on a scavenger hunt to fulfil their marketing schemes).

Obviously not the same for everyone. I know where my local BWS's are and where my nearest Big W is. All relatively nearby.

Of course, I didn't suggest that it was. Some may live right beside a BWS.

I was just pointing out that WW liquor are quite common as well and a bit about their background.

Ditto - got all three brands sorted. Don't normally got to Big W but what the heck - 100 points for $20 worth of easter eggs, get to $30 to cover off one of the three brands. Sorted.

I find printing paper is quite good value there if you’re short ;)

Could it be an April Fools joke?

strange move by Woolworths, IMO considering Amex would cost them more.

Amex would cost them more but to stop accepting Amex would take those people using Amex and send them elsewhere.

They are still taking the Visa Debit card, they are just making you push the Savings button and removing the % take from the transaction. 99.99% people will not care as it will be no difference to them.

If so, they'd also fooled Visa: Visa 'disappointed' with Woolworths

It's more an extension from the current prohibition on Visa and MC gift cards that they (and Coles group) already apply, and probably feel fairly comfortable they've gotten away with. Taking it up to American Express would be a bigger step than this... but you never know given their moves so far, depending on how this goes. It would depend what their current usage is, costs, and whether they believe customers also have substitutes.
