Qantas First Class menus

Here is the food I had.

Wonton soup. Was tasty and a big serve. So easy to get a good wonton soup so not really anything special, but still nice.

The prawn starter was woeful. Three small prawns. Had quite a strong odour (but not off). Did not go well with the olives or pickled celery (which themselves were quite nice). Very glad I had the soup as well.

What do more refined folk think of the Charles Heidsieck? I thought it was bloody awful! Crew went around the cabin at least three times offering top-ups. No danger of this running out in my view.

I really like it! But it has nothing to do with being 'refined'... as with all champagnes (and wines) it's a matter of personal taste. I'm not a fan of Dom for example. The P2 they're severing on select EK flights was 'nice', but I prefer the Charles Heidsieck.

Contemplated the beef but landed on the snapper. Nice piece of fish, well cooked and had a great kick with lots of chilli. Fried rice was nice too. Once again, something you'd get easily in many restaurants or make yourself. But nice.

I think it was the beef that they ran out of. Which caused the nice FA to have to come out to the pax in seat 2F to apologise that the order she had taken earlier wasn't available. Just not good enough.

Forgot to mention I tried two wines with supper. The riesling. Only had a half-glass to taste. Was OK. The Allinda Cabernets was quite nice. Neither were probably good choices with the soup or snapper, and after a bit of champagne and then a whiskey.

Agree completely. Probably should have said "those who like and have tasted many champagnes" rather than "refined".

I guess for completeness there is an element of objectivity. A champagne (like all wines) will have a certain complexity, usually reflected in the price (because of the grapes, vintages, blending etc etc). I guess it is possible - in theory - to appreciate the complexity even if you don't like the taste!

Not a sweet-tooth so usually have cheese rather than a dessert. But cocoa puff had me intrigued. No idea what to expect. For some reason I thought of the old chocolate crackles I had as a kid at birthday parties and school fetes.

Think I'd have been equal parts delighted and infuriated if a chocolate crackle was actually delivered. Instead it was this:

Not too rich or sweet. Utterly delicious. I may turn to the sweet side after all.

Everyone has different tastes. We like the Charles and find Dom pretty average
The world would be pretty boring if we all liked the same things .

I chose the smoked salmon and poached egg.

IMG_2151.JPG

Not sure it was salmon (tasted more like smoked trout). And no egg! Was tasty and didn't desperately need an egg, so ate it but then mentioned to crew that I thought it was missing. FA said she'd check. A few minutes later returned to apologise, saying it was an oversight by the galley attendant. We still had time - would I like anything else. Declined as we were getting ready for descent and I was fine.

Received another apology a few minutes later when walking back from bathroom. FA then asked me if I'd like to take a bottle of wine with me off the plane. As I had my eye on some duty free and limited bag space / carrying capacity I declined, but was nice to get the offer.

A better F experience though not without some shortcomings and a very J food and beverage menu.

The points cost to upgrade was lower than I expected, and with (for some reason) double points and SCs earned for the two J flights booked my net cost to upgrade was pretty minimal in the end. I certainly wouldn't pay outright for QF F.

Here are the menu's and my choices from Monday's (20/8) QF81 SYD > SIN. You'll notice the menu is very similar (read the same) as Kermatu's from the other week. Interestingly, for those that have complained previously that you can't pre-order in F, I found out inadvertently you can! I had pre-ordered a meal as was originally booked in J, and because the meals that I'd selected were on the F menu too, my choices stuck. I did change them however.

Starting with the wines. I quite enjoyed the Piper Heidsieck and found it much nicer than the LGD that I've previously had. Following some comments up thread, there was Champagne available throughout the flight so as far as I could tell it didn't run out. I then moved to the Moppity Shiraz with the lamb. Nice but not a stand out. Finished with a glass of the Noble One with a cheese plate. All wines were $35 - $80 and wouldn't exactly call them premium - particularly when comparing to the likes of EK, SQ, etc.

Food wise, the tortellini was ok. It certainly tasted better than it looked but found that the 'chicken broth' would have had more of an impact if they'd reduced it and made it a bit thicker rather than being soupy. The lamb rack was good - whilst it looked small and slightly overdone, it was tender and juicy and at the end I was actually rather full - beans were cooked well too. Mac and Cheese was the mac and cheese and as has been previously reported quite good. Typical QF 'salad' to go with it all.

All in all a relatively good flight. The aisle A attendant, Jules was a gem. Managed to top me up twice whilst on ground (slight paperwork delay) and then kept the bubbles / wine coming for the remainder of a flight. Very attentive and always there but not in the annoying way. Nothing was too much trouble either.

To summarise, I would call it a solid J flight. Nothing stood out to me as being particularly F or luxe about the experience. This is consistent with my other QF F experiences. The only thing I feel that makes the F experience great is the bed, which on an all-day flight to SIN didn't really feel the need to test. Until next time...

Thanks for this. Do you know if the seasonal dish was also the same (Balmain Bugs)?

So it looks like QF is on a 2 or 3 month menu rotation? I honeslty think QF has given up on F, although it probably makes some money to LAX/DFW?

QF1 or QF81?

Thanks to everyone for posting menus and photos and keeping this thread alive!

Not even QF would have Dinner on a lunchtime flight!?... Surely? I guess if the QF81 flight is not normally a A380 with F (I'm genuinely not sure) they may only have menus for QF1. If so, understandable but yet another sign of a sloppy F product.

Probably worthwhile from people burning points too, for minimal extra cost to the airline (as long as they have 14 F seats that is). Also must be great thing for staff who secure a flight in F. Never a bad thing to have employees looked after on occasion.

Looks like QF81 is operated on an A380 (presumably with full F service) from 3 Aug to 26 Aug. Very sloppy if they couldn't be bothered printing some new menus.

No it wasn't. The seasonal dish was a (king?)fish salad or something like that. I asked as was going to have the bugs if it was the same as they looked quite good from your photo.

Looks like QF1 to me - QF81 should have a Lunch menu!

Definitely QF81. I thought that it was strange that 'dinner' was being served but given they shut the shades promptly after meal service they certainly wanted you to think it was dinner. Suspect you're right and they call it dinner so they can recycle the menu on QF1. All the same what is the difference in meal type between dinner and lunch?

I would agree that QF have given up on F. When you look at what their 'refresh' of F is like when they upgrade the Skybeds it's pretty minimal so says a lot about QFs plan for F (though for some that's not so bad given the comfort of the bed). Yes it is a good way of using points I find and suspect the majority of QF F-pax are just that. As mentioned in the Upgrades thread, from what I could tell there were only three booked in 'paid' F prior to the upgrades being processed. Extrapolating that, you could even suggest that one or two (maybe even all three) of those were booked as a classic reward meaning they may have only had a single (or zero) F full fare passenger/s.

Has QF ever served a proper caviar course similar to CX F?

Not since circa 1998 when flat beds and the 'restaurant' dining were introduced on the 747s, maybe aside from the odd media junket or other such special flight.

I actually have a promo brochure about the F relaunch from back then. Must dig it out - it's in good condition.

I would agree with those dates. It certainly wasn't on the menu in 2002, but I couldn't remember when it was axed.
