Qantas First Class menus

Wine list for QF36 last week - SIN-MEL leg:

What a disappointing wine list.

QF F had two positives - the bed and wine list. Not only they failed to improve the product but managed to make it even more dull and boring.

QF need to get some tips from their better partner EK on how to build a proper first class drinks menu!

But that would cost money! At the moment the only real cost addition to provide F over J is an extra pair of PJs for day flights, a bottle or two of vintage champagne, a canape, and the washing of the extra bedding.

Start branching out into luxe wines and providing a larger range of spirits and that profit disappears.

I'm happy to do the job and advise QF.

EK has established an impressive chain of delivery with its cellaring facilities. Once you get away from the bling of Dom Perignon P2 there's excellent twenty to thirty year old wines served in F and that blows QF out of the water. QF's insistence on serving Australian wine, aside from Champagne, is a major disadvantage of the soft product.

I don’t mind QF focus on Aussie wines. We have some fantastic drops in this country that can rival the old world. The problem is QF can’t, or to be more accurate, don’t want to serve the best. Ironically EK offers better Aussie wines in their F cabin!

I review the EK F wine lists monthly and not so long ago there was an Australian Shiraz valued above $350. Veering OT but I've become a convert to BA F in the last two years and its wine lists have excellent choices with always a fantastic Bordeaux, and there's the Château Margaux doing the rounds on EK. Ok, BA food isn't world beating but nor is it on QF.

Could not agree more. The current F lists (excluding the Champagne) reminds me of the J lists from circa 2012 in terms of quality and price point. Rather disappointing really when, as others have pointed out, other carriers have must more comprehensive and overall better wines.

Talking about previous times, QF F food and wines used to be much better but instead of seeking to improve (like EK do) QF chose to cut costs on F&B. I think It all started when NP and his team came on board, replaced the wine panel and reduced overall quality.

Well QF are the third largest wholesale buyer of wine in Australia, so that cost differential should be manageable.

I think there is a set price per passenger QF is willing to pay.

For QF domestic I reckon it averages around 50c-$1 per economy passenger, and around $2.5 per business class passenger. That takes in to account that many flights fall into the 'snack' category (for example MEL-SYD outside meal times is a packet of crisps, or an apple, and for business class it's a toasted sarnie) and some flights will be a bit more substantial (but recognising a frozen meal costs around $2.50 these days at the supermarket and QF will be buying them wholesale)

For QFi I wonder what the price point is? $7.50-$10 for end-to-end meals for business and first? (These costs still add up to millions of dollars a year by the time you multiply them all out fleet wide.)

Has anyone got any recent QF11/12 F menus to share? Doing a trip BNE-SYD-LAX-SYD-BNE next month and would love to see what’s available

I’ll agree to disagree over the champagne, but vintage Sauternes, Y d’Yquem, premier grand cru Bordeaux, 1963 Graham’s, Hennessy Paradis (they apologised for not having Imperial!), “top shelf” whisky etc, no comparison.
