Qantas Fleet

IIRC the QF November inflight mag says 16 (not that I'd rely on it to be highly accurate).

On the fleet discussion, until this year QF had plenty of 20+ year old aircraft in the fleet. Imagine if AVIS or Hertz gave you one of these on your next rental, http://automen.com.au/CarPix/Car5_1.jpg

Cars have a much shorter useful life, so no comparison really, especially when cars don't get refurbished but aircraft do.

Also to put things in perspective whilst Qantas may have had some older a/c in the fleet (747-400, 737-400, 767-300) the BULK of their fleet is actually quite young. So yes there will be old a/c, yes there will be new aircraft and yes there will be tired a/c that need a refit (A330's). Welcome to the world of the airline business, and BTW Qantas is NOT unique in this regards.

Sure, QF aren't too bad compared to some others out there, but for an airline that has had a dream financial setup from day one of it's modern operation and had a virtual monopoly for 5 years, their fleet is looking pretty tattered around the edges. A lot of talk of re-furbishment here but in reality QF hasn't done much in that regard.

QF barely touched the interiors of the Z planes from their deliveries from BA around 2000 until their retirement. Most of their interiors were held together with glue and tape and looked (and rattled) like wrecks.

I have to fly their cousins at times (BA flights) and trust me... They have had very little love applied as well.

I think there is only 2 more RR powered 767s. Im scheduled on one next week. Ive also got a 734 on bne-mel in December. Probably my last two flights on these aircraft types with QF

I'm fairly sure it's one RR 767 left now with the withdrawal of the latest one recently.

... and it was from row 23 of ZXE where those images were captured ... ;)

(Hopefully the last time I ever travel in it ...)

Seems ZXE is due to fly me MEL-SYD next Friday too. Did you not like the aircraft? I thought the mini Y cabin was cool

Dream set-up, yeah pull the other one. 5 year monopoly, yep that is when they very rapidly put into service a whole heap of 737-800's for extra capacity, then added A330's. As for refurbishment what they did on the 737-400's was very good, the refurbishment on the 747-400's (when they fitted Skybeds and PE), was also very good, along with the more recent refurbs. So really don't see what there is to complain about, afterall there isn't an bottomless pit full of money to refurb or replace every time something starts to wear out. I mean to say the older A380's are looking a bit tired after a few areas, but it is not the time financially to replace.

Every airline, except for maybe a few who do have bottomless pits of money is the same.

I guess my first ever 734 will be my last for a CBR-SYD in Dec. I think I'm gonna miss the RR 767s, have flown them a few times and even though I've never experienced the mini-cabin for some reason I like the plane, especially the rear galley looking completely different.

Dream setup....
When the ATO gives a 20-year useful life for aircraft - needed for depreciation deductions....
whereas some other countries use 8.

There is a reason why they have moved to leasing for most recent purchases.

I suspect maninblack is referring to the way that Australian Airlines was sold fairly cheaply to Qantas, and QF was then given a $1.3b capital top-up by the Government in preparation for its privatisation.
