They have previously announced that 2 will be going. The timing is a surprise though, would have thought they would have stayed until the refurbs have been completed.

Well if they're going, why refurb? So they can go at anytime as the JQ birds come online I suppose.

I didn't mention anything about refurbing the ones they are retiring. Rather I was saying I would have expected them to be needed to cover the ones that are being refurbished. They are after all 2 down with 2 being refurbed at a time.

But wouldn't the birds coming back from JQ cover the shortfall? (EBD, EBJ) are two that have come back recently have they not?

I must admit that I'm surprised they are retiring an A330 right in the midst of an international aircraft shortage, while they are also pulling out A330s for refurbishments. EBH was an international config too - I would have expected them to get rid of an ex-JQ bird if anything. (I suppose it doesn't matter though if they're eventually refurbishing all of the remaining 330s)

I am surprised that the return to lessor wasn't timed with another aircraft coming back from JQ

744 OJI is also due to be retired shortly. These will be the last widebody retirements for a while, until new aircraft arrive, whatever they may be.

Still got 3 A330s with JQ, which will come back as its remaining 787s get delivered.
And then we are waiting for AJ.
 
I assume that once they finalise the EBA with the relevant unions (pilots, cabin crew and maintenance) they will confirm the options, which IIRC will need to be done this year. So full year results time.

Especially as they restore the PER-SIN route with a 737 instead of the former A330 service.

The leasing rates for the A330 are increasing due to increased demand but I also think the impact of the A330NEO launch will accelerate value depreciation so leasing companies maybe trying to recoup this. QF may have decided they could not afford the new rates. SQ is returning very new A330s, at the same time as accepting new owned A330s, due to the increased leasing costs.
 
Side track: hope that QFs 787 dont have herring bone seating in PE/J.
Granted some like it, but to a plane buff who loves looking out the window, sitting in NZs J herring bone 777, I didnt like it.
