Dom-INT or Vica versa are by their nature cannot be airside.

Technically at SYD, the bus ride itself for intl->dom is airside as you do security clearance before the transfer.

Re: Qantas: non-stop Australia (Perth) -Europe (London) Boeing 787 flights set to soa

I was generalising for non-public road xfer.
Apologies - sorry for not picking that up.

Is that the QF transfer that leaves from a domestic gate?.

The fee for service one on the public road is therefore for the ones who have to lug their checked luggage?

Gate 15 at T3 - I think checked baggage will check through to T1 too.

Re: Qantas: non-stop Australia (Perth) -Europe (London) Boeing 787 flights set to soa

The terminal situation in Perth is already complicated, a big stuff up after spending millions, in my opinion. There's T1 and T1D or some rubbish like that. This move would only complicate things more.

I also wonder if it has a bit to do with the QF domestic J being vastly superior in every respect to the international lounge. If you're going to have what I should would be some kind of flagship route, you can't complement it with a sub-standard lounge.

Airside means all security/customs procedures have been completed

Though in some countries like the USA leaving the country does not require direct customs and immigration interaction

Airside is anything past security (nothing to do with immigration. And in Sydney you pass through security before getting on the bus (on Qantas)

If they were to use the Dom J lounge it would be before immigration. VA are being crucified by some very vocal members here for trying that in MEL for Nadi flights.

Another escalation in the attempt to extract cash from the WA Government.

Looks like PER customers will be paying for the LHR service even if you never set foot onto a QF aircraft as PER airport “has offered Qantas a generous multimillion-dollar incentive package’’ to use T1.

Re: Qantas: non-stop Australia (Perth) -Europe (London) Boeing 787 flights set to soa

Do they also still require you to cart your own luggage to/from bus when traveling intl->Dom or is there now a luggage drop like SYD? My sister was less than impressed with the b*s transfer when she did it a few years ago with a 3yo and 1.5 yo in tow ...

It was a couple of years ago so I'm going from hazy memories (so don't quote me on this). I think that I had to take my check-in luggage with me (after clearing customs & immigration) onto the bus and re-check at QF Domestic.

Re: Qantas: non-stop Australia (Perth) -Europe (London) Boeing 787 flights set to soa

I read the article linked above in the print edition of todays "West" and there was an interesting vignette at the end. A FIFO worker who lives in Perth but works in PNG transfers in BNE everytime they go to/come back from work. They manage it without much hassle (all QF itin BTW).

VA moved terminals to align their operations, why should I have to pay for QF to do the same. As far as I can see QF are asking for me, and my fellow West Australians and users of the airport, to give them a competitive advantage. Well QF, if you hadn't all but abandoned PER as an international depature point (with a real airline) then I might feel a bit sorry for for you, but you have, and I dont.

Part of me thinks that the airport and govts should approach Virgin Atlantic and offer seemless transfer with VA and possibly NZ offering PER as a jump of point for the flight to LHR, with connections from VA within Australia.

Re: Qantas: non-stop Australia (Perth) -Europe (London) Boeing 787 flights set to soa

Im surprised that QF did not grab the T1 domestic before VA

Nothing unusual there are probably plenty of other commercial agreements you don't read about with other airports too..

Given the cost it's chicken feed when building a new te

Were Qantas asked at the same time? Was a deal done for VA to move first? You are assuming Qantas didn't want to move.

Also given Virgin Atlantic bailed from SYD, I can't see them flying into PER.

No not assuming anything, just surprised that while it was mulling over the 787 because if its long range that it did not move on T1Dom.

Re: Qantas: non-stop Australia (Perth) -Europe (London) Boeing 787 flights set to soa

yes a 2-4-2 will reduce Y seats by 16 which is about 10%.
estimated weight removed 16x80kg bodyweight + 16 bags at 30kg = 1.7 tons.

Which equals lots more profitable freight (something the A380 cannot do well). Alternatively a longer range

The idea of connecting at an Australian port is inherently attractive but the SYD experiences have put me right off the idea (SYD dom-int and even more so int-dom connections are blacklisted). I much prefer to start my international travel at the international terminal and transfer international to international with access to international lounges and international inflight service and standards (perhaps the real reason why the QFd B737 J seats are much better than the QFi B737 J seats to NZ?).

Having said that I find the 17.2 width on QFd whY too narrow and I'm not over-sized. I am touching shoulders with the man next to me on most flights and often get thighs appearing under the armrest from the pax next to me. Hard enough on a 1 hour flight. PER & LHR? I don't think so.

In the past many airlines would fly a sector between 2 Australian cities and then a longhaul sector. This was a little bit of a drag in terms of time but never a blacklisting experience. The savings in terms of connection times (when all international) is considerable when not having to clear customs and bus between terminals ( a compulsory minimum 4 hours connection at SYD dom took all the shine off a great F flight).

So I would consider PER-LHR if I was flying J and I could do all my travel between international terminals.

There was a very good reason why they didn't go for the 777's at the time. They didn't have the range required and capacity in slot constrained airports.. Dixon then wasn't interested in updating the fleet as he was trying to flog it to a PE bid.

That has resulted in them falling behind.

Bit at the time the A380 was the choice over the 777. Today it's a different story

I don't understand the issue re range as QF's direct rivals use the B777 on the routes that QF would use (i.e. ETOPS is not the problem) and also on other ultralonghaul routes eg HKG-YYZ

Re: Qantas: non-stop Australia (Perth) -Europe (London) Boeing 787 flights set to soa

The long term plan is to move QF over to the international side of the airport, so any work at the existing QF terminal would be a short term 'stop gap' measure.

The commitment of QFi to WA is questionable also. It was not that long ago that there was not a single QFi flight operating from WA. As the business case for PER-LHR-PER is rubbery at best, QFi could pull out of the route in twelve months leaving the Government spending a lot of money for nothing. PER airport know this so that is why they have said no to QF.

I'm suspicious that the pull out of QFi from PER was part of the battle to get what they wanted re terminal access

Because at the time the decision was made between the 380 and the 777, the 777 didn't have the ETOPS rating it has now. This has been stated numerous times.

Perhaps they weren't given the option to move first? Perhaps VA were offered it first?

Re: Qantas: non-stop Australia (Perth) -Europe (London) Boeing 787 flights set to soa

No room?? no facilities? if they can't move the domestic ops over to the other side then moving the limited INT ops to the DOM side makes much more sense.

Given that it appears arguable that QF's lack of foresight (or poor planning) has contributed to this 'mess', perhaps it would be fair for the airport lessees to insist that QF pays, or at least makes a 75 per cent contribution.

As stated above QF's past track record in WA with international flights does not inspire much confidence that it has genuine commitment to this state (QFi).

I recall AJ not so long ago pleading with the then Federal Government for corporate welfare. Thank goodness wise heads in government prevailed.

Re: Qantas: non-stop Australia (Perth) -Europe (London) Boeing 787 flights set to soa

Thinking about it further from a WA perspective - T1 makes so much more sense given the likelihood of a integrated rail line into the city. Whereas T3&4 will be painful.

If people are going to extend - or perhaps just have long layovers - easy connections into the city will be essential. That is supposed to be up and running by 2020.

FWIW - I've never had an issue getting a bus across a tarmac. It would be painful if you had to go all the way around - but if you can go across the tarmas 0 it'll take a couple of minutes.

Flew QR business last year and had to bus it from the plane to the terminal, and thats a brand new terminal and a 5* airline. No dramas though.
