Qantas orders new 787s and A350s

Qantas, whose original decision to opt for a smaller type of Boeing 787 in 2005 led to a review of Airbus's wide-body strategy, is considered to be among the most influential aircraft buyers.

Surely they jest? Qantas' piddly order of 14 B787-9's is one of the "most influential" purchases? You've got to be kidding...

Also, Airbus winning the Sunrise order is no great coup given the expensive bespoke modifications which will render the planes uneconomic for any other operator, it's not like that's going to spur a raft of similar orders.
 
Qantas ordered 115 787s to start with almost 20 years ago in a mix of firm orders, options and purchase rights. Between cancellations and the 25 aircraft received by JQ and QF, there should still be 9 options and 30 rights available.

The “influential” 2005 commitment was for 115 787s (45 firm, 20 options & 50 purchase rights). Of course that never happened, but 14 787-9s at QF and 11 -8s at JQ is certainly piddly in comparison.
 
I Hope they don't go Boeing and look at the A330 NEO. The Boeing 787 in its current 3x3x3 in Y is Horrid.
Hopefully. Sometimes these pressers / leaks are the act of desperate bidders.

How is it horrid for the airline Board? It has good economics and punters continue to fill up the seats at a premium price. Sure it's not the most comfortable for all but when has that *actually* been a requirement particularly for Y? They aren't going for comfort, they are going for the minimum that customers will put up with, which they are clearly meeting based on the continued high load factors on most routes.

If they do choose a plane that has slightly better comfort in economy, that is only an unintended side effect of the business case working out better for some other reason. Don't kid yourself.

787-10 has the range to do BNE-LAX and SIN-LHR; even SYD-SCL/JNB with slight payload reduction .

Seems a bit much for transcon - but I guess they could move the JQ 788s to domestic and use the 781s for international.

I don't agree, I think a few airlines will be looking at the variant. However QF did get the bespoke 747-400ER which many would say was one of the best decisions QF ever made so this is no different.

Which got no other passenger version made. Though the cargo companies did love the 744ERF. Maybe UPS etc might take up some A350-1000ULRFs. 😅

I could see Qantas firming up the majority of their remaining 787 options/rights, which in theory have delivery slots in 2025/26.

The article says QF is an influential aircraft purchaser, it didn't say the 787 order was influential.

Given QF's history and that it can now claim a bespoke aircraft variant from each of the two major manufacturers, it's not that far off the mark.

QF also ordered the 707-138B which was bespoke as well, to enable longer range.

Which includes being one of the handful of airlines Boeing asked to help design the 777. Even if they didn't end up ordering any, Qantas got a number of the things they wanted included in the aircraft.

I don't see that the Qantas modifications to the A350-1000 make any sense for freight - they are having to add a huge amount of weight in aramid shielding to protect the fuel tanks in the cargo hold, all of which impacts commercial payload. Freight doesn't complain about refueling stops so none of that would make any sense in a freight variant.

However I think there's quite a few possible operators for the pax version, all of which are current A350 operators:
BA (LHR-SYD)
AF (CDG-PPT)
SQ (SIN-NYC)
TK (IST-SYD)
DL (ATL-SYD)

Of course they would be looking carefully at exactly what weight composition and yield they project for the Sunrise routes 😉
 
My guess is the announcement will be on Thursday. This will be Joyces last financial results and no doubt will want a big investment to finish off with.
 
Thought that due to/re project sunrise, it would be only a350s for QF int ultra long haul, and 220 or the other one for the dom short haul/int short haul, and no more b787s.

A330 replacement - as per the other thread.

Lots of short to medium-haul routes that need something bigger.
