Qantas Platinum One experiences?

Just received my "Don't miss out on Platinum One" email - highlighting that my renewal date is in 4 months time and I haven't yet requalified. Some might see this as a kindly reminder from the Qantas Loyalty team who are looking after my interests in case I've forgotten. However - given that my requalification flights will take place next week - all this really does is remind me that Qantas is a large faceless corporation and that no-one is monitoring my activity. I would have thought that with the wonders of the interweb they could have sent me an automated email that read "congratulations, we see that you'll be requalifying next week, etc, etc".

I just received the same email and am at the other end of the scale but agree with your sentiments. I have 250 SC's, of which 130 have been earned on QF marketed flights. It does rather smack of "We actually have little interest in you and certainly have no idea about your travel over the last 8 months."

To be fair most businesses rely on the old automated email these days but it is not a great look when you reaching out to your most frequent customers.

As it happens I have earned 5995 Tier Points with BA over the last 8 months, by the time my QF year ends that number will be 7885. You'd think QF might want to know why my flying patterns have changed. (...and it is not because QF is poor - it is simply that BA offers me what I need at a better price with a superior frequent flyer program for my needs)

Now that you have attained it - congratulations Princess Fiona - you must utilise the benefits (and hope they are plentiful)

It's now been 6 months since I let my P1 lapse, which has given me plenty of time to digest whether I have in fact missed it or not.....

To summarise...

1/ I've had better treatment from QF in the flights that I've taken post-P1 than on most (if not all) that I had as a P1;
2/ I've received zero contact from QF to enquire as to why my flying pattern has changed (not that I was expecting it, given they have a 360-degree view of me already...NOT)
3/ I currently have achieved 20 SCs in 6 months.

I still haven't decided whether to file for divorce or stick with the trial separation.... I will probably take another 12-18 months considering my options......

In the meantime, I'm quite happy with my top stAAtUs on some other airlines, and happy to keep directing my spend elsewhere.

But Princess Fiona's iPad case is way cooler than the coughpy plastic thing they sent me a couple of years ago.

Got to say I am sitting on (booked flights) 3330 SC with 4 and a half months of my membership year to go. I'll probably cough up for the 270 just because I'm so close it seems silly not to, but really I kind of agree that the experiences are, in the main, pretty meh. I do wonder if the issue of P1's not showing up properly on some manifests is part of it, though I have had some CSM's definitely note my status so it seems random.

Really though at the end of the day I still believe QF runs a pretty good operation - I've rarely had delays, and only one of those remotely significant (2 hours) and while all the show tickets and extras are nice for those that get them that's not the core point of the high status but to be looked after when things go bad, and to offer extra flexibility when you'd like or need it. So far one hasn't happened and the other I've not been knocked back with a request for an earlier flight (even a seat on a flight EF claimed was 0's in all J classes) and generally been treated well if not over the top.

Now I may feel differently if I had been on one of the (quite a few :( ) delayed/disrupted 380 services over the past 18+ months (still would love to know how P1/CL etc have been handled in cases such as QF9 recently or long delays on other services) but in general I have been happy with QF product and service, and probably had little impact from P1 since i'm normally in the higher cabin (and a few Y flights I've been on on 2 class equip about half of those have had comp P1 upgrades attached) and had little disruption so QF's done the job they do and given me all I need as part of their normal operations which makes the status not so important.. but you can bet I'd rather be a P1 or WP than a NB in the case of a disruption or issue (or at the very least I could spend 7 hours in the MEL F lounge when EK diverted, but that's a whole other story that's not relevant to this thread).

If I had maybe under 3000 SC I probably would stick with WP tbh. I'm not sure what my line would be to make the effort to get to 3600 or not but it's likely I'll head into my 4th year of P1 but probably my last given LTG achieved and the rest. We'll see.

Ok Qantas - it's a deal. You can carry on sending me bland corporate emails as long as the op-ups keep coming. J to F on QF8 yesterday - thanks very much Platinum One team

The above is almost an exact copy of my experience post P1, except I have managed to attain 80 QF SC in the past six months since the drop and will hit a massive total of 160 QF SC for the full year. This SC total will be my lowest yearly QF SC earn (by a long way) since joining on the collapse of AN in 2001 and I may now drop below WP for the first time since 2007.

P1 (and maybe QF in general) is really meant for those living in SYD and MEL only. Even the P1 SST admitted that when discussing the lack of QFi service from other cities. Out of PER, if you fly anywhere but east, P1 is almost redundant as you will be on partner airlines (EK,CX,QR) which do not recognise P1 anyway. Even when flying on QF, I was a 'second tier' P1 which did not receive any of the services or offers noted in this thread (or by QF themselves) and I was really just a WP with a white FF card.

I had made the decision long before dropping back to WP that I wanted a divorce and I have to say the change has been very refreshing in a lot of ways. So much that it felt quite strange flying QF after an almost five month break (and a very large number of flights on other airlines) that I realised that QF was no longer 'my airline' after an almost exclusive 14 year relationship. I have a few QF dom A330 J flights booked over the next few months to try to burn some of my QFF points which may rekindle the relationship, but these flights will be a 'red tinge' on an otherwise 'very purple' flying schedule for the reminder of the year.

At the moment, there is very little I actually miss about being QF P1 (or QF in general) as they did very little for me and I really cannot see this changing whilst I am still PER based.

My P1 expires next month and it's been a quiet year flying so I'm nowhere near retaining it. I thought I'd give my thoughts;

My work flying tends to alternate. One year I'll be flying weekly for most of the year, the next year I'll hardly step on a plane. Which made P1 a little pointless for me since I hardly flew last year but will start flying again in the next couple of months once it expires...the irony.

This past year I've flown a couple of domestics, a bunch business class internationals and a first class international. All QF codes. one QF code, Emirates plane.

Platinum for your partner is a great feature, especially if your partner flies domestic a lot. She flew more than me this past year.
Being able to jump on an earlier flight if I get to the airport early has also been useful
Status acknowledgement is something I enjoy, preferably over the tannoy, but I'd accept a simple face to face hello, something that I'd say happened more as a platinum than a P1
Had one check-in desk upgrade for a domestic flight (which would be a high success rate given the lack of flights)
Being able to pick the front rows is always a benefit. It's amazing how much time you can save getting off the plane first(after business)
Had an invitation to watch rugby at Homebush in the Qantas box. I enjoyed learning a little about other P1 frequent flyers. Their is no one stereotype that's for certain.
Received a nice bottle of champagne. I'm a big wine drinker so was well received.
Had a shadow seat on a business class international flight since my original seat was broken.
Had shadow seats on domestic econ flights.
I did receive better status acknowledgement on the Emirates business int class flight than the qantas business int flight.
Their was a good level of acknowledgement on the first class international flights leaving sydney, but I'm guessing the service level would be the same what ever status you are.
I found the Epiqure membership to be useful, I'd have probably not used them otherwise and they do have a few good wine deals.

What will I miss?
Platinum for partner, earlier flights when arriving at airport early, a bottle of champagne at christmas, and the knowledge that if the cough hits the fan, I've got a number to dial.

With the lack of flying the past year I've not really had chance to "experience" the benefits of P1 and I've always been lucky that I've never had any problems with Qantas flights. They will be my choice of carrier for this next year.
