I think you can actually have a look for such fares using ITA. Just change the sales city to, e.g. Sao Paolo, Brazil (and change the currency to AUD if you want, otherwise the result will be in BRL).

For some reason, though, an option you get through ITA may not appear in Expedia, even if you choose the same dates.

Expedia BR tacks on a wee hefty booking fee it would seem. But even after that, the overall paid fare is still very cheap. I wonder if there are other Brazilian travel websites that can also try and replicate these bookings (though Expedia is nice and familiar).

If a fare is valid for sale in a country, and you buy it there... I can't see how it could cause issues later. Now if a fare that is only valid for sale in oz is being sold overseas (and vice versa), yes that could cause issues.

decolar.com seems to come up with more flight combinations

Something to keep in mind is upgrade requests on domestic segments lock Expedia out of making any changes you might need to make, I had a free change with another booking as Expedia could change it but just changed one next week and had to get Qantas to do it with the usual fees and fare difference which hurt!

Can someone tell me what YQ means? Is there a definition page on AFF for these acronyms?

Yq is the Qantas fuel surcharge charged by qantas on flight sectors. I don't think yq is defined here, but there is an abbreviations thread.

YQ is the tax code you see on a fare calculation used by most airlines to disguise a cost of doing business (buying fuel) as a tax. It is used to screw frequent flyers out of more money when redeeming award flights and to reduce commissions paid to agents.

YQ (and YR) are carrier imposed fees. They are not taxes, and most carriers are careful these days not to call them taxes.

According to ITA Matrix, it should include all taxes, except for YQ

No, since it was ruled to be deceptive conduct, the carriers have been much more careful with their wording.

It's essentially treated as a tax in reservations systems. YQ is the code used for this 'fee' but those codes are referred to as 'tax codes' . Either way my post is completely correct in that the airlines absolutely use this to disguise a fee of doing business as a 'tax' or a 'fee' or 'surcharge' , whatever you want to say. but go to expedia and try booking a qantas flight you will see this YQ is just a part of the 'fees and taxes' and not part of the airfare which is definitely where it should be. It is used to gouge travelers on FF tickets and to reduce agent commissions.

I said the carriers are careful with their terminology. Agents such as Expedia are not so careful. Book it on the Qantas site and the words 'carrier charge' are there.

It's all been through the courts, and commissions are payable on the surcharges.

yes for ex-Australia itineraries but the commission on the taxes is often a lower % than the airfare. For some itineraries like in Europe there is still no commission on the surcharges.

You sound like you work for an airline the way you defend it. It should be incorporated into the price of a ticket like the yanks and some middle eastern airlines do.

I agree that it should be included in the fare. I do not agree that the airlines call it a 'tax'.

Neither of which has anything to do with my employment, which is not with an airline.

Just thought I'd mention that the transaction description on the CC statement comes up as 'QANTAS A IRWAYS SAO PAULO BRA'.
So don't suppose I'll get 2 points per dollar on that one (Especially considering it's hard enough to get 2 points per dollar for QANTAS MASCOT purchases!).

Someone want to share some experience? Qantas legally can't demand more payment at the airport, or invalidate the tickets, can't they?
I would not think so and if there was something wrong then they would need to take it up with the travel agent issuing the tickets.

Qantas Mascot is no longer. Its Qantas Air Australia. For reference this sao Paulo transaction gave me zero bonus points on nab premium card. However a Qantas Tokyo transaction in January did give bonus points.
