Not surprising, you need to ring them (28 degrees) and let them know of an impending overseas transactions, one from Expedia and one from Qantas in Sao Paulo.

I've never had the need to do this with any of my multiple overseas transactions over the years.

and my card invariably gets suspended when an overseas transaction occurs....
I was contacted by a 28° rep some years ago in Japan to confirm a purchase I had made.

Other than that, I have not had an issue in dozens of countries - I might say though that my withdrawals tens to be smallish.

I regularly get an SMS for confirmation of purchase from them ...
I have had to do this in Thailand when I am booking over the internet.

It is a hassle to take Thai sim out and then put Australian sim card in but I guess there is no other way.

Pity about the Expedia fees which are a separate charge but those wondering how its billed:

VISA-QANTAS A IRWAYS SAO PAULO BRFRGN AMT-720.360000
$364.97

How does the expedia fee appear please?

From my experience, I got the following authorization when I book:
- 2x BRL 2.00 by Expedia BR (I guess test charges, later released so didn't show up on the statement)
- BRL 118.00 by Expedia BR (showed on statement)
- Qantas Airways Sao Paulo for the remaining amount (showed on statement)

Perhaps its the amount of auth in short time frame that triggered the decline?

Interestingly the Qantas charge did not trigger my overseas/online alert, indicating that it may actually be charged from Australia but in BRL.

Thanks Galaxy. And thanks to AFF for this tip to use expedia.com.br. Painless so far (apart from availability disappearing before my eyes!). Authorisation appear on cc immediately (I did warn the cc coy in advance I'd be putting through a Br transaction), and seats selected on qantas.com within minutes of the booking being made. There must be something wrong with the economics of flying when two nights in hotel in Singapore costs more than the return flight....! I'll be visiting SIN for the Sundown marathon (actually only going to do half marathon), so be prepared for TR that may involve a certain striped item of clothing.

How is everyone translating the page etc ?
Does not seem logical that it can be so different ?
can you book Domestic AUS trips ?

Use Google chrome which will auto translate.

Google Chrome does an ok job of translating but not great. It is easy to use though! If you know the layout of the Aussie (or any other English speaking country) Expedia website and the airport codes, you don't even really need to translate it, as the layout is the same. No reason why you can't book domestic flights but may not be cheaper - I checked flights to LA and they weren't any cheaper.

Just booked return tickets to Tokyo for ~$800 so my wife can visit while I'm there for work.
Thanks for the tip Finale!

I take it people have travelled on these European / Brazilian tickets?

Just showed an example of these tickets to Dad (BNE-SYD-MNL). Absolute bargain (about $100-$200 less than the normal price here), but apart from Dad not liking going through SYD (he's had less than great experiences at SYD Customs; no he has no "record"), he's scared that it's so cheap (no YQ) that he may be refused passage because he "hasn't paid the right fare" or something like that. Basically he's scared the fares or the use of the fares aren't legit.

Someone want to share some experience? Qantas legally can't demand more payment at the airport, or invalidate the tickets, can't they?

Love the tip, though. Might try it myself...

I booked a SYD-BKK return with expeida.ie mid-last year for my girlfriend's sister to come meet us in BKK. No issues at all. She paid ~$600 for that and because she saved some $$$ and not keen on the ff points business, sent me what she earnt :)

It depends: they can sometimes demand more at the airport. It's happened to me a few times. At check-in: "The taxes are wrong - you need to pay the adjustment at the ticket counter". Not a change in the ticket price - but a change in the taxes. But in all my cases I had made changes to the original ticket - and had paid any penalty in the ticket rules - but the taxes hadn't been recalculated correctly.

They were minor cost adjustments in my cases - so I just paid them. No big deal.

Still, I had to do it if I wanted to fly! Sticking to the what's on the original ticket should be OK.

Murky waters there. I have no personal experience but will have tomorrow! Members here have used this fares without trouble, and I'm sure plenty from that site that ruins every Australian bargain have taken advantage also.

In the end it cost me about $580 with a flight change fee PER-SIN - so still came out ahead of the usual 'sale' price, even with the extra fee.

I expect no trouble at the airport
