Absolutely. QF may be worth looking at if it is a 747. But if comparing to QF A330, the IFE on EK is much better, and the seating on EK equivalent. Having done MEL-SIN or vice versa a number of times on both carriers, I now take EK 77W over the QF A330 if available. I don't how accurate seat guru is, but it lists EK's seat width as 17" and pitch as 32", whilst on the QF international A330's it has seat width as 17" (333) or 17.2" (332) and pitch as 31", so really not much difference (although I wonder about accuracy as domestic A330's are listed with 17.5" seat width).

My preference for these fares is;

1. 747
2. 330
3. EK

Taking the above into consideration I'll give EK a go one way....I take my iPad so IFE does not really bother me either way.

Anything is better than QF3 on the 767.
Unless an aircraft gets subbed, QF only use A330s between MEL-SIN. You need to go via SYD to get a 747 (maybe).

Correct - QF have only used A330s on MEL-SIN (QF35/36) since the tie-up.

SYD-SIN is a twice daily service with one A330 service (QF81/82) and one service which varies between A330 and B747 (QF5/6).

And of course BA0016 daily with a 777 which in the W cabin credits fully to all OW partners...

But the pricing exSIN is much better for the customer.

Happy wandering

Or via BNE on QF51/52 - more SCs on the MEL-BNE domestic sector as well!

BA's W class pricing EX AUS is crazy! Currently about $1200 return. You can even combine it with a multi-city from the west coast ;)

The economy connections book into B class, great for EQM's!

The 3 am departure may discourage some travelers. I had a block of 3 seats for the flight over and 4 for the flight back with EK. It was nice to have a lie flat bed in a barely 1/3 full Y cabin!

YMMV

I've ummed and ahhed about using br to book an EK MEL-KUL trip as I've never been to KL and think it would be great for a long weekend away.

Assuming I can get a Status match to EK Gold - what might I expect on that horrendous 3am departure? Would you assume a shadow or 2 on a lightly-loaded flight?

I can only offer a sample size of one return MEL-KUL flight, but I had a shadow in both directions.

I've been umming & erring on the br. website also for a fair while, but decided to take the plunge.

So far so good, in terms of the Correct payment being processed on my CC & as i added my QFF number during the booking process the Flight details appear on "My bookings" when i log onto QFF website.

Pretty confident all is in order.

Just note that the Br. website only accepts Visa & Mastercard & not Amex unfortunately.

I say Go for it...... chaeper than flying MEL > BME & a lot further = More FF points.

I keep looking to book through the Brazil website but I keep thinking about what will happen if I need to make changes. I have a few unpleasant stories here. Any saving will be gone and not sure it is worth a risk.

It'd have to be a decent discount on a J or F fare to tempt me (one not already on the AU site) - JohnK's advice is worth factoring in to whether the discount is worth it.

Not really, the fare conditions are the same be it booking with QF or BR, for $400 for a weekend in Asia with $100-$150 worth of points it's not much of a decision.

Its not the fare conditions I'd worry about, but if I'd have to talk/deal with the local office (I.e. Credit card must be sighted by local office, etc). I'm talking generally of course, not in relation to this specific fare - I'd factor this risk in to the price discount I'd find acceptable (something that would vary from person to person) and as I mentioned it is really just J or F fares that'd get me interested (but that's just me).

I had such a wrinkle when I booked a flight out of Kuwait, but thankfully managed to organise a work-around.
