I reckon it should; I was on the last flight¹ out of Sydney that Saturday - spent the weekend wondering how I'd get home from Dallas.

Good point Serfty. My wife was somewhere in between all this, I was wondering how all this was going to work. This is emotional energy. Even though we are all expert in solutions, there is energy consumed!

What do we think the likelihood is of Qantas bringing back it's "free upgrades" for Platinums next year?

Highly unlikely! I think that was a limited one off and even during the free upgrade period not all J seats were being filled IME. For example one flight involved 1 or 2 empty J seats, easily getting the front row of Y with empty middle seats, surrounded by gold luggage tags and being offered a points upgrade by the check in kiosk.

My last flight this year was outside the free upgrade period but I did a points upgrade. At that time expertflyer told me there were 3 empty J seats. Get on the aircraft to find a full J cabin, including 2 young ladies who were amazed they were upgraded, loudly and in detail. Turns out they were qantas crew (plain clothes with skippy carry on bags) who were returning to ADL after 7 weeks in SYD, I assume from training. They also had a great chat to one other person in the J cabin and asked if they were flying to DRW next week. Apparently, it was their first flight after returning to ADL.

So my take is qantas would rather take points from suckers like me or upgrade off duty crew (this is not a judgement of crew upgrades, just a statement of my perspective) before giving out free upgrades to platinum

I don't believe they will.

By the way did you end up with any "free upgrades" during that period? I did not even come close and one flight there were ~10 empty seats in business class.

Hot Chocolate is really appropriate this morning-

Keep on giving it to me
Crazy 'bout you baby (mad about you darling)
Keep on giving it to me
'Cause I'm mad about you darling
Don't stop it now.

Any airline would be looking to get something for a upgrade, rather than giving a seat away for free.

So what does qantas get out of upgrading off duty staff (not in uniform but travelling for work), besides good will from employees?

Now the caveats, I think it is great that off duty staff get upgraded. Definitely not judging that or suggesting staff shouldn't be upgraded. But I do think that the good will of an upgrade for a platinum is equally valuable.
