Qantas to allow free changes, cancellations to Classic Flight Reward bookings to 30 September 2022

I've had a 3500 change fee applied to a Classic Reward that I booked with QF Business Rewards points and changed the date of the flight today. The MMB said 0 points for a change fee when I changed it online but I was charged it against my QFBR account:

This is Qantas to a tee.
Absolutely, positively, could not care less about customer service in any way. We are victims of no competion...In 2020 I got all my AA refunds back within 10 days. Qantas took 75+ days minimum and I had to chase missing ones.

I had a flex booking Y QF to Broome for Sep 21 as they were only means of getting there direct and Vic was not leper-colony status at the time.
I paid April 21
I cancelled July 21 due to subsequent lockdowns /WA blah blah souring the plans.
I could not stomach dealing w call centre at that time to get refund even though happy to wear the cancel fee
I have my travel credit to Dec 23 and it says I can still apply for a refund if I have not used.
My gripe:
No where on my ticket/itinerary/ff account or credit does it confirm it was full flex Y and therefore refundible subject to fees. The ticket mentions ‘check fare rules’ but nothing that says what they are or even my fare class other than Economy.
WTF?!
I never use QF (surprise surprise) and now think I will aim for the refund minus whatever $$. Im happy to wear that to never use them
Any ideas - best time to ring call centre etc

I'm not sure if many others are in this position but i have 4 award bookings on the go - three being lengthy OWAs and all international .
Hardly a week goes by that there is not a change usually related to itinerary changes associated with the latest Covid crisis . Mostly these are reparable by QF if their metal involved but often not so is another airline.
I am dreading the arrival of February 2022 when points are levied for changes .
I understand that if changes are not of my doing, then it should be free but sometimes you have to argue the toss .
Sometimes one itinerary change means changes further further the itinerary which , because of lack of initial availability , had to be done at a later date - here in the past i had to fight not to have to pay the points charges.
A good example is an itinerary next september - my inital ticketed flights, Cascablanca to LHR (then to Iceland) were cancelled by Royal Air Maroc . I was then rebooked Cascablanca to Madrid to Amsterdam to Helsinki then to Iceland. A week or so later , the HEL-KEF was cancelled and i needed to find a way via LHR- the only other way to get to KEF. No award seats economy or business were available for 3 days in a row so I put that part of the itinerary on hold in the hope some thing came up .
It looks like I may have to cancel the Iceland side trip - sure I could pay for the BA LHR-KEL for the two of us but i am hopeful that something will come up.
Well it did but option was a connection LGW to LHR which because, there is only one flight per day on BA to Iceland , there would be a longer than than 24 hour delay and hence that would count as a stopover ( out of the maximum five allowed)
Some of the later changes required secondary to the above initial RAM change have occurred several months later - I may be forced to to pay points for this kind of thing come March 2022. Lets hope QFF keep thorough records .
I use this example of how complex award booking is at the moment and appears likely to be staying that way post February 28 next year.
I hope QFF shows further consideration for its points holders and extends the points free changes further into 2022.

Fee free changes for international has been extended to 31 December, 2022

Given the continued volatility of international travel I would expect this to be extended, but in any case, Fly Flexible covers international bookings made before 28 Feb for travel until 31 Dec - so there should be continued flexibility on any international travel until end of 2022.
 
With everything that's going on, I'm amazed Qantas hasn't yet extended Fly Flexible for domestic travel beyond Feb. Virgin has already extended to end of April.

I expect they will bundle Fly Flexible extensions up with status & Qantas Club extensions, then put out a press release with delays to route resumptions buried in the fineprint under all the good news.

Did you get the "personal message from Alan Joyce" email on Monday? "The good news is travel is back."

Extending flexibility, status, route resumptions and anything else is the exact opposite of the message Qantas wants to be sending right now.

At least internationally , it only covers flights that occur before 31 dec 2022.

International flights

Any Qantas flights:

  • booked between 25 February 2021 and 30 June 2022,
  • for travel between 1 November 2021 and 31 December 2022.
 
I have domestic reward flights booked (SYD-BNE-MKY return) in Feb which I should be able to change for free, however the Qantas website keeps saying it cannot find any flights available on the days I selected, despite being able to book new reward flights for the time selected.

What do I do? How do I actually go through with changing the flights? I've tried messaging them on Facebook and haven't gotten a reply back. I imagine calling them up would be hell.

If you've got enough points just cancel and rebook.. but you'll be waiting a while to get your points back

My experience is that you can get your points back immediately if you contact the FF Team by phone and explain that you need them for another booking (whether you actually do or not).

They also tend to answer the phone within minutes (or at least that was the case a few months ago), unlike the reservations people.....

your classic international flight changes appear to be covered by until 31 December 2022

this gives you one year and one day....
 
Looks like Qantas have had a change of heart. Flexible Classic Flight Rewards officially ended for domestic flights on 30 April. However they've since updated their website and reinstated it until 30 June 2022. I think this change has only been made in the last day or so.


Early last month the above page did briefly update to say expiring on 30 June, but it was quickly reverted.
