Qantas to move to new Perth Airport terminal, expand Perth hub

Doubt this happens in T3 but in the new terminal I'd be shocked if they didn't
They're going to need to do something about capacity at T3. Not sure if there's physical scope to make the current international lounge larger?

If there is a flounge I doubt it will be to the Standard of SYD and MEL.
Only 6 F seats for project Sunrise planes and with just 12 planes I don't think there will be another Sunrise flight from PER.

It's for the WPs like myself who are generally in Y or maybe in J if an upgrade comes through ;)

There's at least 3-4 A330 flights a day between PER and MEL. I always book them as long as they're not ridiculously more expensive than their 737 counterparts. Pretty good J upgrade availability too!

QF767 @ 7am
QF769 @ 9am
QF775 @ 2.30pm
QF781 @8pm

QF9 is also still running (not for much longer though, the MEL-PER leg is being cancelled soon)
That's true until the Int'l a330 fleet has an issue.

F Lounges are primarily for Frequent Flyers, it's pretty rare that the people in them are actually flying F. There's 4 (QF, QR, MH, CX) different OW carriers currently flying to PER and there's currently no OW lounges in the international terminal.
F lounges are generally initially built at airports where there is an F service. From a size perspective, they take into account Platinum/Emerald, but they are built where there is an F service (even if that goes away)

You forget that the massive FIFO workforce in WA would have a high percentage of WP rated people.....
And they like regular wandering
Fred
Correct. I’m not going to pretend to know the numbers, but I’d say WA has an extremely inflated amount of WP’s compared to other states, even more so now that the resources industry has started to shift towards 1 week on 1 week off rosters. A lot of these FIFO workers are getting 40 status credits a week just from their work travel, never mind what travel they might do in their time off!

When I was FIFO I had a colleague who lived in remote SA. He was flying 3 sectors twice weekly for work, all In flexible Y and all paid for by the company. He would’ve been bringing in over 100 status credits a week, easily.

I’ve had to leave the PER J Lounge and QPub multiple times due to not being able to get a seat anywhere.

And PER will have at least one, if not multiple F services once the Sunrise A350’s arrive. It’s been confirmed they will take over QF9/10, and don’t be surprised if they are used for PER-CDG as well.

T3 is getting an ’expansion’ as part of this upgrade to bridge the gap between now and when the new terminals open, but I don’t think they‘d include additonal lounge space in that given what they’re spending on (is it going to be called T5???) the new terminal.

And yeah, the current transit lounge is pretty cramped as it is, and I don’t see where they‘d find any extra room. Maybe they could expand the outdoor area a bit? It all seems like it’s been shoehorned into an unused space but they‘ve done quite well with it.

Unless there’s an old lounge space where Ansett/VA used to be back in the day? I’m too young to know where that was, if it even exists anymore.

Ground floor. Used to be before you went up a set of escalators to Gate 16(?)

That‘s probably the space the lounge is already in then, given you go downstairs back towards the front of the terminal from the departures concourse to access it.

T3-T4 are already rabbit warrens and all the spaces are currently being utilised.

The Perth Airport must have agreed to expand the terminals to accommodate QF requests/needs. Presume will they expand the terminal from Gate 20.

Gates 25-35 are hard stands.

Glad that there's finally something in place. Can't come soon enough. Maybe we'll even get a nice new lounge out of it, although I doubt we'll see a dedicated F lounge. I suspect they'll do a combined international lounge like they currently have, albeit bigger in footprint, with a roped of section for the actual F Flyers, CLs and P1s of the world. WP is too common in Perth for them to cater to directly.

Also, looks like I might get that PER-AKL direct flight after all! But I'm more interested in the Tokyo leg coming back. Would be great to have that non-stop option again. Singapore is fine as a connection, but I'd rather just get to where I'm going.

Interestingly, from the Qantas press release (https://www.qantasnewsroom.com.au/media-releases/qantas-and-perth-airport-reach-landmark-agreement/):

As part of the agreement, Qantas plans to build a new engineering hangar in the Airport Central precinct.

That is quite the statement. I wonder if this engineering hub will be specific for the shorthaul aircraft that they need to service the FIFO market, or whether it will have capacity to work on any of the bigger birds as well.

Unfortunately since both Qantas and Virgin reduced their business seat availability between Perth and Darwin I lost my platinum and am now struggling to maintain Virgin Gold.

Its great to see a deal finally gone and the two sides making up. Before the new rail line I wouldn't have been happy with the move because it takes longer to get to T1/T2 by road, although I don't mind one extra train stop - it gets us to the terminal unlike Redcliffe and TransPerth don't gouge us like we do with Sydney and Brisbane's train.

Well they need to do something about drop off and pick up at Perth Qantas.. I dropped off a friend at Perth Qantas the other day, and you have 7 minutes to drive around, drop or pick them up and get out of the exit gates. You have to move real fast!!!! I literally threw her bags out, then you have to get across 4 pedestrian crossings when people are messing about, in the queue out etc. I made it with 2 minutes to spare.
There is going to be an accident, someone run over, with everyone rushing.

Around the other side at Virgin, its a non-issue now with the train nearly up to the terminal. We pick people up from the train 4 stops away from the airport, and use it ourselves with Uber or a lift.

The train stop for Qantas is a kilometre away from the terminal, requiring a shuttle bus, too far to drag your cases, in a tiny suburb called Redcliffe. What idiot designed it like that.

That was never meant to be an airport train stop. The current Airport train stop is at Airport Central (International/Virgin side), which Qantas will move to by 2031 with its new megaterminal there.

Yes, that does require a bit of patience until you can step off a QF plane at PER and catch the train. But at least it's happening.

I really doubt QR are panicking. There are some facts you are obviously unaware of but I doubt That QR is simiarly unaware. There have already been a couple of Australian smaller resource companies signing agreements for exploration in the ME. Saudi Arabia in particular is encouraging miners to think of coming.
Our own Austrade is also encouraging it.

And what is WA's major Industry?
major industry, gas, iron ore, digging stuff out of the ground , and cattle, wheat and sheep farming.

this new development will likely lead to more exits and cutbacks from foreign airlines while its QF’s and Australia’s time to shine with nonstop from east coast and one-stop via Perth bound to crush the current dominating airlines. It’s a matter of when, not if.
Why would you expect QF's competition to experience "crush"?

The pick up and drop off has nothing to do with Qantas, that’s all on Perth Airport.

The same system entry/exit timing system has been in place at T2 for years, and you can put your house on it being implemented at T1 next. It’s criminal.

Why would you expect QF's competition to experience "crush"?
Because only a very small minority chooses to fly one-stop with Hawaiian, AirNZ and FJ when travelling between Australia and the USA. The vast majority flies nonstop with QF or competitors also flying nonstop.

And the same will happen to Aus-Europe. It’s bound to happen.

It may take some time but it’s a matter of when, not if.

ME airlines will lose out and the competition QF will need to look out for will be the likes of BA, VS, AF and LH if they seek to start nonstop to Australia as well.

You can make a longer list of Major companies with major presence in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Banking, finance, Insurance, retail etc. And not all of Australia's minerals are substantially produced in WA. Most sages are forecasting a boom in copper prices and only 2 of Australia's top 10 copper mines are in WA.

But all that is meaningless. It is the number of Frequent flyers. And just remember WA is only 10% of Australia's population.
80% of australia's population lives in NSW, Victoria and Queensland.
