Qantas to release thousands of Classic Reward seats in Y, PE, J, F on 24 Feb 2023 around 11am

Yep, we've seen and discussed those JQ incidents, both flights being to Melbourne too.

I've also advised her of this.

Seems she just needs more convincing - but overall she's just wanting a direct flight which is now no longer available (other than our confirmed and ticketed JQ rewards economy seat).

Basically she's picking a direct flight on JQ economy > business on QF with a 2hr transfer in BNE. It's the last (coming home) flight of our 6 leg trip.

The rest of our 6 leg trip is in business (combination of QF, AY, AF and BA), but for the final leg, we just couldn't find reward seats in anything other than JQ when we booked it (was prior to last week's release of seats).
Plus it s an overnight flight right? Yea you need to make the change.

I wish my partner was that flexible. Now she expect J, and is not impressed with the Y+ I had to settle for to go to LHR...

Is there availability to stay the night in Brissie and go home the next day?

Thanks everyone for sharing the mutual support (of picking business class on QF even with a transfer, over a direct JQ flight in economy).

She's not budging and still 100% wants a direct flight.

For context, the trip is for our honeymoon and it will be the return flight back home - she thinks we'll be dead tired after 3 weeks in Europe so being on QF or JQ won't matter, even though she acknowledges it's business vs the lowest of all economy flights.

Also not just that but one of her friends got affected by a transfer in Sydney to the US lately (they had a QF flight from Melbourne which arrived late, and then missed their connecting international flight (AA) to LAX and had to wait 12hrs for the next available flight they could be put on (which was QF to DFW)) and I think she's emphasising that delay too much - thinking it might happen to us should we get a direct flight. She then points out the JQ issues at the same time! Just can't win.

All I can do is sigh.. If only there was a QF flight when we made the booking, I would have definitely booked that! Pity that there was only a JQ one at the time. In hindsight, I should have just left that sector out and book separately (of course, not knowing that Qantas would release more reward seats only weeks later!).

Maybe if you take this one for the team, suffer a 15 hour JQ delay, sleep in an airport and spend the 8 hour overnight flight squished upright into your narrow 787 Y seats with some burly malodorous drunk in your row, you might get your way 100% of the time in future.

Just tell her the JQ flight has been cancelled/oversold/whateverexcuse and you are all moved to the new QF J flight.

Hmmm.

I have some sympathy with your other half on this one.

If it was longer than just singapore I’d completely agree that business class would win. But SIN-MEL is such a short flight… 6 hours and change… that extending that by an extra three hours or more for a transfer via BNE may not be appealing.

Obviously the transfer issue goes away because coming back you wouldn’t have to wait 12 hours for the next flight… but it’s the transfer and then a domestic flight which is closer to economy anyway :(

In my books there's no way JQ Y would be acceptable if there was a QF J option. Ever.
To some folks a 6+ hour flight isn't such a short hop.

I get that, but it’s the transfer in BNE… followed by the two hour flight at the end down to MEL. You’re spending an extra 3 hours… 50% more travel time! I can see the appeal in wanting to get it ‘over and done with’ rather than pfaffing around. Plus, if you don’t get some serious sleep on the SIN-BNE, the domestic flight can be a real drag.

Nice,
I noticed there were also SYD-SIN flights available on Xmas day as well. Last year i managed to score 4 J SYD-SIN on Xmas day as well. Obviously no one wants to fly on Xmas day. Hoping for a new release later in the year with some J seats.
I've flown Christmas Day in the past. It is a quiet day. Can work until Thursday night, fly to Sydney spend a few days with mum and dad and fly out Christmas Day.

Wish I could find award seats to return to bring this points balance down.

Flew SYD-MEL QFJ on Xmas day a few years back. Only pax in J and the crew brought out fruit cake.
2 slices and a cab sav. Merry Xmas.
One Christmas Day arriving in Perth everyone received a wrapped gift that was on the conveyer belt !

a Qantas umbrella ☂
which stayed in Perth with my golfing brother-in-law

So I've decided to meet halfway in between - Premium Economy on the direct Singapore to Melbourne flight even though it's only 17k points difference between PE direct and Business via BNE.

See some seats available, currently calling to see if they can see the flight (as I'd rather have everything on the one PNR rather than booking a 2nd itinerary).

Just tell her the JQ flight has been cancelled/oversold/whateverexcuse and you are all moved to the new QF J flight.

I don't think she's going to buy this unfortunately!

I understand the concern and additional time about a transfer, but for lounge access in both Singapore and Brisbane plus a fully flat bed on the international overnight leg, I'd pay the extra 17k in points (plus taxes) and transfer.

Me too, but I guess not everyone else sees that logic.

Yeah it's a 11.5hr total trip vs 7.5hrs - pretty much 50% extra but business vs economy - hmm..

But thankyou everyone for your messages of support - I knew I wasn't going crazy when I thought that taking a JQ economy seat after all legs in business was a crazy idea!

In hindsight I wished there was at (the very) least a QF economy reward seat from Singapore to Melbourne at the time of our booking. Instead, we had to settle for JQ reward seats out of all flights and seats.

I couldn't think of a more useless way to use points (even compared to the Qantas store!).

See some seats available, currently calling to see if they can see the flight (as I'd rather have everything on the one PNR rather than booking a 2nd itinerary).

So I've called up and again some inconsistent information:
1. The agent is "unable to see" the PE reward seats that I can see and book online
2. The JQ leg is unable to be cancelled, without losing the entire itinerary (ie. the 5 legs preceding)!

So basically I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place:
- My partner won't accept a non-direct flight (even on business!!), but at the same time then complains about JQ and the latest issues etc etc..
- I can't change my flight within my existing rewards booking as the agents "can't see" what I (and this whole community) can see and select online
- The agent is claiming that I cannot cancel this leg

I've HUACA around 50 times already (literally) and I really just want to get it sorted out - why does Qantas make it so difficult - I honestly don't understand. The biggest issue to me is that it's available online, so why can't the agents see that too?!

Alternatively, accept your partner's JQ choice and be happy🥰
