Qantas Upgrades - Successes or Failures (post results)

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

Just got that lovely text message confirming upgrade PE>J for tomorrow's QF7 SYD-DFW :)

Doing it in style.

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

2 x PE>J for SYD-xLAX-JFK on tomorrow's QF11 confirmed by QF earlier this morning. 100% upgrade success rate maintained! Will try again for the return.

Cheers,
Matt.

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

I'm 3/3 for Domestic Y -> J (MEL<->SYD). I have 2 requests for Y+ ->J Feb/March next year (QF1, 2 day stop-over in DXB then pick up QF1 again) and 1 in April (QF10) but those are popular routes so not expecting anything.

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

Forgot to report this but managed to get my NB sister a Y->J upgrade on QF93 10 days ago. Yes, used my P1 priority so she got cleared around 28 hours prior to departure which was a lovely surprise for her (as intended - she had no idea I had put in for her). I suspect NB alone wouldn't have gotten a seat as it was down to around J3 about 27 hours out IIRC, but still all that mattered is my sister's first time in a premium cabin was on a 14 hour flight. She loved it :)

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

Making First post a happy one, 2/2 on recent trip to Europe QF9 & 10 (MEL - DXB, DXB - MEL legs) Y - J both confirmed at 24 hours+ out was a bit surprised as the J cabin seemed basically full both ways and am only PS + QP. Even had luck with auto seat selection both ways in the forward J cabin :)

Nice way to bookend the trip!

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

2/2 J --> F on QF93 (last 10 months).

0/2 J --> F on QF94.......

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

Another datapoint:
Fell from PS to NB at the end of July. Got the text message for the Sunday QF7 SYD-DFW. Y --> J success! Only attempt I have ever made, so 1/1.

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

Another upgrade to J for Mrs Dalek and myself on QF17 today, since I've been a WP I think I have only missed one upgrade and I got a consolation Y+ that time at the gate.

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

Qf94 tonight PE > J, makes both long haul upgrades from PE on this trip. Loving it.

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

Coworker received upgrade Y-> on 127 SYD-HKG about 40 hours out. He's Gold.

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

Being presented with an upgrade present or opup I think its called where a person hasn't asked for it, is one of the best things of all.
Have had that on a dom flight once.
Using points, have had success all the time I have put in using points for it, all dom flights.

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

Can I ask what value people see in upgrading from J>F especially on flights under 10hrs?

Having never flown F might be the reason for my question...however it seems F is not much more of an experience over J as opposed to the huge gap in experience going from Y to J.

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

Definitely true that there is a much bigger gap in experience between Y and J - just being able to lie down and sleep vs being upright is incredible. However there is actually a big difference in comfort between the bed in J and what you get in F and also service levels. Difference in alcohol, but that doesn't worry me. Everyone will differ as to how much they value that. Certainly if I couldn't afford if or it wasn't available on a route e.g. Syd-Jnb then J is fine. We will be in trouble for going off the subject :)

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

My upgrade as follows just came through (1 day after my birthday too :) ).:)
QF93 MEL-LAX 25/08 PE to J.
I'm QF Silver.

I've previously upgraded on QF128 from PE to J (when I was Bronze).

Congrats Paul, we were on the same QF128 flight as you earlier in the year. We are also coming back on QF18 in Sep, hope we are not competing for the same upgrades again :)

I'm starting to worry that you're following me! :)
I'm on QF18 on Sept 11.

Good luck (unless we're on the same flight then... haha)

Lucky for you I'm leaving a few days earlier, one less WP to compete with. Shoot me a PM closer to the time if you would like me to check the loadings for you again. Can we look forward to another video of your trip?

Thanks Dalek, I'll be in touch.
Yep I've got a new camera which records better video footage so there'll certainly be a trip report on youtube within a few days/weeks.

You can also expect trip reports with AA First, Alaska First, Virgin America First as well as QF18 over the next month. I've also got two trans-Tasman flights with LAN (J in the 787) and EK (First in the A380) in late September which I'll be videoing.

Edit: oh and good luck with the upgrade. :)

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

Re F over J.. there aren't many flights left that are under 10 hours (LHR-DXB v.v. come to mind) and sure, J would be fine for those 6-7 hour flights, but for your flights to LAX or DFW (or MEL/SYD-DXB through to LHR) the value of F is increased.

For me it's the flat bed WITH aisle access. J is fine, but if you're stuck in the window, getting over someone to get out etc is a PITA. the suite with the bedding, duvet etc are so comfy and obviously far more private, quieter, and the service far more personal.

I'd do it any time I had the chance for that alone. For me it is about comfort and ability to sleep plus ease of access above all else.. The catering is a bit better (well if the load LGD it's a *LOT* better :) ) and service more personal for sure.

So I think most would see the value in upgrading J-F if they can, specially if points are not so much an issue it would be a no brainer.

I completely agree with this. It's a no-brainer use of points to get J-F upgrades on SYD-LHR or SYD-DFW/LAX.
The proposition will change somewhat once the new J suite is offered on the 787. I'd be tempted to save my points and bag a J seat MEL-DFW if that suite/route becomes a reality.
